Chickens! Everywhere! And turkeys and ducks! The chics chase their mothers who are being chased by the cats, that are being chased by the dogs that get chased by the kids and their sticks and rocks and so it continues! They roam the streets, houses, restaurants and bars and the Roosters start their cock-a-doodle-bloody-doing at 4am and just keep on going setting off every dog in the neighbourhood!.....phew! The other first impressions (other than the many birds) was that Laos is far more peaceful that Vietnam. No honking horns and rushing traffic. Lots of very relaxed and friendly people. The electricians leave a lot to be desired in Laos! Wooden boxes hang down the walls with various switches and sockets nailed into it that spit sparks at you when you attempt to plug any thing in! ... read more

I had visited Laos 6 years ago, and really wanted to bring Jane to see this amazing land. From the moment you change up your 100 pounds travellers cheque (there are no cashpoints in Laos), and get given 1,800,000 kip in 20,000 kip notes (the largest denomination), 90 notes in all - you know that you are in for an adventure. Crossing into Laos from westernised Thailand, over the Mekong River and suddenly everything takes on a slower, more relaxed pace. Our first stop was the capital Vientiane, hardly a metropolis with only 200,000 people living in the city. There's no McDonalds, no shopping centres and only 4,000km of paved roads in the whole country. Being a former French colony, there's plenty of baguettes, croissants, cheeses and wine - unusual for most of Asia. Luckily for ... read more

That hot shower that I raved about before…I had the equivalent in a meal last night. A huge, juicy filet of beef with a 3-pepper sauce with potatoes and hot bread. A nice bottle of imported red wine…I was in absolute ecstasy. It was the first time the people I am traveling with have seen me finish a meal…and I actually finished first. I swear I could’ve ordered a second steak and ate that one just as fast. The whole meal cost me $9USD. I swear I cannot spend more than $20 a day in Laos…it even makes Thailand seem expensive. The restaurant was called Le Cote D’Azur and I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Vientiane. There are many French restaurants here and you can see the influence of the French in the streets, ... read more

Hi, Already in Vietnam, when I received my visa to China, I have realized that I might need to exit the country after, the most, 30 days. I applied for 1 enrty, 60 days and instead, the travel agent gave me 2 entries, 30 days each. The most reasonable country (China has a border with around 10 contries or so) to cross by land from Yunam province seemed to be Laos. At the beginning, when I first saw the visa mistake I was really annoyed because exiting China was not on my plan but when the time passed and after I confirmed the fact that I will need to exit (or extend the first entry and cancel the second one) with the police, I started to like it. The weather in the mountains area of North ... read more

After spending a really nice last night in Thailand in our wooden riverside guesthouse, we get up early to go through border control to get to our new country, Laos. This entailed a boat crossing over the Mekong into our new town, Huay Xai, where we quickly went through the town on a tuk tuk to board our river boat, which will be our method of transport for the next 2 days. after reading other comments from people saying that we would have to sit on wooden seats or on the floor for 2 days, i was pleasantly surprised to see that the boat was newly kited out with what appeared to be car seats. these were really comfy and we had a 60ft longboat just for our group which was nice. plenty of room to ... read more

Haha, I bet you thought I was dead. Nope. But the heat could just about kill a guy. I'm in Laos now and I like it more than what I saw of Vietnam. It's less crowded, not humid, and man is it beautiful landscape out here. It turns out I was in Vietnam illegally so I'm lucky to be where I am right now. Somehow, my passport never got stamped at the airport when I first landed, but I got through customs and everything so I was none the wiser. Then a few days ago at the border crossing there was confusion but they kind of shooed me along to the entrance to Laos. Then I got a bit worried when they informed me that I had no proof of ever being in vietnam because I ... read more

Okay, usual disclaimer about how this date is really not the date of entry but is the date of actual occurrence. Date setting helps keep the blog current and the people organized. That said... Our travels in Laos, originally scheduled for only 2 weeks, have now run in excess of three weeks and very nearly frighten a month. After Vang Vieng (which was completely un-Lao), we boarded some inflatable kayaks and headed south. Now this really was a good sell. Sign says, "Going to Vientian? Like Adventure?"or something like that. We thought 'sure' and signed up for what was billed as a kayak from VV to Vientian. In reality (which never seems to match fantasy for those of us not named Mick Jagger or George W Bush) we travelled for 2 hrs by van to the ... read more

With a little help from a few American compatriots (Paul and Will from Minnesota) we decided that the Laos word for Hello, Sabadee, sounds like Suup Buuudy....Thus this is how I have started greeting people. Maybe it's only funny in my head, or it's one of those you have to be here to understand it. So all you get your butts to Laos... So after 8 great days in Luang Prabang I decided to head south to check out the backpacker town of Vang Vieng. My van broke down on the way there but luckily 3 Norwegians drove by and offered to give me a ride, leaving the other passangers of my van behind. It took them 12 hours to make the journey, while I got there in 6. few!!! Found a lovely room with ... read more

Hey everybody!Hope you are all doing good,as usual :) I'm sitting in Vang Vieng,Laos! We arrived here today and are going on to Luang Prabang tomorrow according to plans.. I left Langkawi last Wednesday and flew langkawi-kuala lumpur-bangkok in one day! I met up with Marthe, a girl from Norway! I booked two nights at a guesthouse outside of the city - next time i'll book it in the town lol! We only had two days but I think we saw enough of Bangkok! Bangkok is soooo huge and noisy, you cant escape tuktuks and people wanting your money! The first day we booked tickets up to the laos border before we got lost in some back alleys. It was in the middle of the day but frustrating enough! We was supposed to find the skytrain, ... read more

Hi, We had much trouble doing the web site in Laos due to lack of good internet in regional areas. We are now in Chiang Mai as of yesterday, arriving by plane !, from Luang Prabang. Laos was hard work with Jetson and in retrospect it kept us on edge because of the lack of medical infostructure. Have a place with a pool... so we can run around stopping Jetson falling in.... for about 12 dollars a night. Laos was a fabulous experience for us mainly due to the Laos people themselves. Little in the way of material posesions but rich in spirit, generosity and honesty. They have not much in the way of medical fercilities and it was common for people to just die from being sick (i.e appendicitis etc) so life is viewed in ... read more
