Laos I had planned on leaving for Laos the day after my birthday, but after a late night I needed a day to recover. So on the 31st I was off with Bob and Kath (from the trek) heading for Chang Kongh which lies on the Mekong river bordering Laos. After a long bus ride we arrived in time to find accommodations, grab a bite to eat and prepare for the border crossing in the morning. The next day we stocked up on supplies (including a case of Beer Chang) and headed across the river. We had planned on cruising to Vang Vien on a slow boat down the Mekong over 2 days. Unfortunately we arrived just in time to miss the once daily slow boat, so we had to spend another day looking over the ... read more

Hello to you! Hope you are all well and good. The weather is still lovely here, but getting hotter by the day. The tans are definitely improving and we haven't killed each other yet! Even manged a bit of a romantic getaway at the beginning of the week! Stu has been warned that Valentines day does still count when your travelling, so looking forward to that (Sarah)... Our travels have been taking us further North in Laos. This time we were at the old capital of Laos called Louang Phabang. The old town is now a world heritage sight and contains lots of old French Colonial buildings. We travelled up to Louang Phabang with Laura and Andy. The journey was, erm, memorable.. It was six hours of twists and turns and a bus driver who drove ... read more

Part 12 Feb. 7 Muang Ngoi I don't think I have ever been in so remote parts of the world as where we spent the last 4 days trekking. Not exactly Margaret Mead, but walking six hours to a Khamu village which had only seen foreigners 5 times got us far from the tourist circuit. We couldn't be much further from Vermont, almost literally at the opposite side of the globe, but more so, in terms of life opportunities, it couldn't be more different. Our trip grew ever more removed from the developed world, beginning with a 2 hour drive north out of Luang Prabang, past small villages where the proportion of plaster or wood houses to bamboo moved increasingly to zero. After one hour, we left the paved road for the dusty gravel road lined ... read more

Well, probably not - 8km isn't all that long unless you get lost. Getting there I was a bit late getting up at Tha Khek and only just caught the 9:15 bus to Vieng Tham and, as the last passenger, had a plastic stool in the isle. I changed buses at Vieng Tham and arrived at Na Hin at about 1pm. I jumped in the 2pm Seungtheauw for a very uncomfortable 4 hour ride to Kong Low. It started with about 10 of us in the back an got up to 23 at one stage - along with half a ton of cement and a refrigerator. I guess we must have averaged about 10km/h as the trip was about 40 km. It certainly didn’t feel any faster than 10km/h. Kong Lo Village I was met at ... read more

Over the past few days I had an experience that I had really been wanting to have. I hung out with a novice monk. These are the guys that wear the orange cloaks and are seen all over South East Asia. When I see them the put me in a trance. Perhaps its their orange garb or their shaved head, but they simply amaze me. While waiting for the red cross to open I decided to check out the Buddhist temple across the street. I walked around for a while and came upon a monk making a lanyard. He greeted me with a "Saidee" which was standard and then asked me "How are you?." We started talking and he told me to go and check out the beautiful temple, which had paintings of Buddhas life. ... read more

I thought I'd start out with a little insight into how my mind works. This is important in two ways. One - it is cathartic for me to write these things down and, second, it gives each and every one of you empathy for Aneta. She spends each and everyday with me (and forever) and listens as I share some of this with her. I feel particularly empowered as I am reading a collection of David Sedaris short stories which make my neurosis seem quaint and quite mainstream. Today I was thinking about how jipped I feel about the whole Malaria thing. Maybe the whole medical travel thing. Firstly, let me say that we are grateful for our relative health during this trip barring some skin infections and stop offs for immunizations. But, really, the "exotic ... read more

Today I donated blood for the first time in my life. I'd always been either "too busy" or just not that inerested in doing this deed. I had seen signs around town that encouraged travelers to donate their blood at teh red cross, so I decided suck it up and take the plunge. It took me three days of trying and going by the red cross but finally today i was accepted with open arms. The lady took my blood pressure 137/72 (Dad is that good?) and then layed me down. Hesitantly I asked her if it was a clean new needle. She giggled smiled and showed me the now unopened package. It actualyl didn't hurt that bad. I braced myelf and before I knew it blood was flowing out of me at about 1pint ... read more

Some of you may have been wondering what I have been up to since my last entry. Yes, once again I have been bad at keeping up to date with my stories, but hopefully I will be able to stick to my once a month update from now on. No promises though! So….where do I begin? December was as expected a fairly crazy month. I found myself a house with plenty of room for guests so let me know if you are coming through. It is a wonderful house with a great garden and has what I am labeling the biggest mango tree in the world. Can’t wait till mango season and I can string up a hammock and lie there swinging away eating mango after juicy mango. My house is on the same road as ... read more

Happy as we were to hop off the 'chunder' bus, our first glimpse of Vang Vieng wasn't quite what we'd expected. Rather than dropping us off at the bus stop, our mini-bus pulled up outside a guest house of a friend of theirs - pretty standard practise in Asia, where everyone is on commission to everyone else. The interesting thing about this guest house was that it was on the main street of Vang Vieng, a street that had all been torn up & covered in gravel in the middle, with big piles of rubble all over it, and massive 1-2 m ditches on each side. To access any shops or guesthouses, you had to walk over tiny wooden planks across the ditches Good fun with packs on. Anyway, we got to our guest house, a ... read more

The bus from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng was memorable - unfortunately for all the wrong reasons. There were in fact 2 minibuses departing at the same time. We ran into our South African friend from the border crossing, Claudia, who had luckily got on the nice new minibus. We were on the old decrepid one. Read no Aircon & highly cramped. Being one to get carsick & being the first person there I put my day bag in the two front seats - behind the drivers seat then stood outside stretching my legs while waiting for everyone else to turn up. Unfortunately 3 nice friendly chinese men saw that those were the best seats - in fact they looked like first class airline seats and (no joke) had as much space as the whole 6 ... read more
