I left Vientiane for Vang Vieng entirely unsure of what to expect - everyone I've met whose been to the latter either absolutely loves it, or absolutely hates it. It can apparently be described in three words: Beer-Lao, tubes, and Friends (please note the capital, it's an important distinction!) Regardless, I was excited to move on after spending entirely too much time in bed in my previous two locations. On the bus I met three Aussie girls (I love the eavesdrop-and-interject method of introduction... too bad it only works when backpacking), and happened to spend the next few days with them, so from this point on the blog pronoun will be "we". We quickly found a lovely guesthouse, had a quick bite to eat, and set off to take on the activity for which Vang Vieng ... read more

Claudette was so enthused by her experience yesterday of giving food to the monks that we planned to get up early to do it again. Alsa, we overslept and were not able to give them anythin. All the same, a procession went past our hotel where a couple of old ladies hand out rice every day to the monks. We watched from our balcony as we finished breakfast. We then headed out to the morning market where the locals go to do their daily grocery shopping. Fresh fruit, vegitables, fish and fowl lined both sides of the street. There was even some live game. Some creature that looked like a guinea pig. I got to see some fresh tamerind. It looks nothing like the packaged mush I can get at home. Our next stop was the ... read more

After parting ways with Claire and Marianne I caught a minibus up to Chiang Khong, a small town in Thailand on the border of Loas. The bus from Chiang Mai to Chiang Khong took 6 hours and I stopped over a night at the border, unfortunately my room was directly above a bar which was blaring out music all night. Since I couldn't sleep I thought I should just go down for a drink. I met up with a Scottish couple from Glasgow who are planning to marry on a Thai island in a week or 2 and stayed up drinking Thai tequila with them, some local Thai's and a Laos immegration officer. We played pool and ate pork barbequed on the campfire until the wee small hours. I got to bed at 5AM and set ... read more

Claudette was out and about at 6am to watch the novice monks got out to gather their daily bread. Over 200 paraded down the street to collect their sticky rice and other food offerings. It is a real tourist attraction as several tour busses arrived or the spectacle. She had bout rice and fruit to hand out but didn't realize that one was to only hand out a handfull to each young boy so as to spread around the fferings. Breakfast was served by the smiling young lad at the hotel before our boat trp along the Mekong River. We traveled a few minutes up river to the anamist village of Ban Han where they make clay vessels for sale to hotels throughout SE Asia who use them as flower pots. This is an iniative of ... read more

With this entry I will be caught up. We flew Bangkok Air to Luang Prabang in Laos. Again, the stewardess' we smartly dressed and full of smiles. We flew quite low so I was able to see the scenery below. Waves of green mountains and the mighty Mekong River snaking through the jungle-cloaked valleys. We had to pay an extra dollar to get into the country as it was a weekend and this covered the overtime for the custom agents. Quick and efficient none-the-less. We were met by our guide for the next few days and taken to our lodgings at the Le Calao Inn on the banks of the Mekomg. Lunch was ready for us as he was anxious to be on the road for the 1.5 hour drive to the waterfalls. It was to ... read more

Lay back relax, take in the sights and sounds of island life from the comfort of a hammock. Laos is one of the most relaxed countries in the world and Don Det is one of the most relaxed places in Laos, does this make it the most relaxed place in the world? Not if your logic is slightly more developed than this simple statement, but it was very very relaxed. The perfect place to spend lazy days that stretch into lazy weeks with that significant other. Lacking a significant other I spent a few days on bicycles collecting punctures, afternoons tripping around waterfalls stubbing bruised and bloody toes, and evenings playing guitars. Don Det, is a small island in area known as Si Phi Don (Four thousand islands), southern Laos, close to the Cambodian border. The ... read more
