{apologies for the lack of linguistic finesse, I'm reeling from the after-effects of "lao-lao" - Lao homebrew, tasty!} Getting to Thailand was exquisite. Nepal had been lovely but even there the constant military presence made me uneasy, and I found it quite difficult to meet people (again, a million thanks to Ben for saving me on Christmas!)... I was incredibly eager to get back to tropical South East Asia. Even in Bangkok, the city which gave me so much grief as the first stop in my trip I was struck by the relative ease of, well, living... The less-than-sparkling city felt fresh and clean, transportation was modern and fast and understandable, and people starting behaving the way I expect them to - there were suddenly women visible in public jobs and the staring was a little ... read more

We ended up catching up with Arno after we got a tuk tuk to the waterfalls. He was riding some of the way with one pedal but luckily some locals helped him out on the way to re-attach it. The big waterfall in Luang Probang is very beautiful but is crowded with tourists. Thinking that we'd be a bit different, we hiked to the very top and peered over (a daunting sight to say the least). After coming back down, we'd definitely earned a swim at the base of the waterfall, where the water is clear and fresh but extremely cold. Some of the boys (including a crazy Queenslander who was trying to climb up to the top) jumped off the rocks into the pool just below the waterfall, while i took some action shots. Well, I am home in L.A. but haven't posted a last letter about what were some highlights of my trip, so am doing so now. Beginning with Luang Prabang, Laos: Hurry, get here before it changes. It is magnificent. A UNESCO site, a perfect little village, authentic Laos, but with a slight bent for tourism. Only 4 long streets and alley ways in between, architecture French and traditional Lao, a town of Wats and monks everywhere. As we walked the streets we could see saffron-garbed monks, ages 8 - 80, going about their day, bathing, brushing teeth, young boys frolicking in the river, doing boy things. A highlight was a daily dawn parade of all the monks in the village walking the main street with their food baskets seeking alms from the devout and the not ... read more

We've been on the road a month now! Okay, here's some things we've noticed on the way, but don't really fit in a blog. 1. Laotian goats are very muscular. 2. There's a brand of toilet paper here called 'Sit & Smile'. 3.The Eagles followed us all around Thailand. Every...Single...Town. I kind of got used to it, and have now chosen Take It Easy as my favourite song, because really, you shouldn't let the sound of your own wheels make you crazy. Stuart wasn't as impressed, mainly because he had to listen to me singing into our torch, or a bottle, or a fork... 4. In Luang Prabang I had a drink called a Lemon Nana! Here's a picture... 5. Also, here's a picture of a tiger for Harry, and if you go back to the ... read more

A few quick days in Vientiane. The captial of Laos, as laid-back as capitals come, a colonial city slumped on the banks of the Mekong. Small dusty with the ubiquitous temples and tuk-tuks. Just out of the city there is one of the weirdest parks I have ever been to, surreal statues of Buddhist and Hindu folklore, complete with a Hellmouth. I searched around for my very own Buffy but didn't find her. The rest of the time I spent talking with Dave and Stefan in some of the many French inspired cafes or bars. A trip to "On the Rock" where a Lao covers band crooned out many a balad popular with the Ladies in the audience and then made a perfect rendition of "Hotel California" - they were good but I have to conclude ... read more

It must be more than a week since I've updated, oic! Luang Prabang: We arrived a couple of days before Christmas (via a propeller plane; Stuart was pretty excited by this), and stayed nearly a week. There's not actually that much to report from there re: activities, because we kind of took it easy. It was that kind of town. Mostly, we wandered about and sat along the Mekong at the little restaurants there and read our books etc. Yes, Stuart is reading! I even have a photo. We weren't all that energetic because the people staying in the room next to us were two of the biggest @#@#($)()%*)*@^)*@%^)*6's ever. I truly, truly hated them for keeping us up every night. You get that way when sleep is hard to come by anyway, and then some ... read more

Before crossing the border at Chiang Khong, we booked a ticket for the slow boat down the river for Luang Prabang. The guide took us down to the river and we sped across on a speed boat for Laos. We had already arranged our Visas (although i think you can do it once you reach the border). The slow boat was exactly that - SLOW!. Slow to get going, slow once it was going and the crew also seemed a bit slow. We didn't get a seat as it was packed out and the driver was having a really hard time steering as there were so many people on board. We spent some time on the roof, working on our base tans for the islands. This was very chilled out, however it was short lived. About ... read more

The VIP bus regurgitates the passengers for Vang Vieng onto the gravelly disused airstrip that separates the town from the highway. Disembarking, approached by tuk-tuks and leaflets for guesthouses - I choose the first, $3 a night with the hottest shower I've experienced in south-east asia I decide to stay at the Thavisouk. It's the 26th of December 2005, I plan to stay a few days and head to Pak Say and the four thousand islands fairly quickly. The town of Vang Vieng is small, a couple of streets lined with backpacker bars, low slung tables with comfortable recliner cushions popular in Thailand. Canned laughter spills out on to the dusty streets, the sounds of endless episodes of “Friends” being played on DVDs from restaurants I vow never to attend. Despite a heavy cold I decide ... read more

Claire and I are taking the “Journey through Laos” tour with a UK based company called The Imaginative Traveller. This will be a real change for me and I’m looking forward to letting someone else deal with arrangements. We’re due to spend a couple of days in Bangkok, then a day in Chiang Mai in the North of Thailand. Then we cross the Mekong into Laos and spend two days sailing down to the town of Luang Prabang. Christmas will be spent in the “mysterious” Plain of Jars before visiting (to quote the brochure) the “quaint hamlet” of Vang Vieng before we go to the capital Vientiane and return to Bangkok. Bangkok So, we had a day to explore this place before meeting the tour group. We visited the National Museum. It gives a very good ... read more

Last letter lost in cyberspace. Hope this one takes. We arrived in Vientiane last night on Air Lao, an airline not certified yet by international standards, but the propeller kept going round and round and got us here safely from Bangkok. After checking into our rooms at the Settha Palace, lovely French colonial restoration, we had dinner at 10:00, one of our best the whole trip. It was french cuisine, and I had delicious lamb chops, Tom had sirloin and Manuel eggplant. We were in heaven after a day of travel. This morning after a less delicious breakfast we meandered into town, a small city actually, the capital of Laos, but pretty rustic. We visited a few Wats (vats, here), walked through town checking out the shops and had a delicious Lao lunch. Lao is known ... read more
