After more than 2 weeks in Hanoi, albeit with excursions to Sapa and Halong Bay, I was getting decidedly twitchy, it was time to be on the road again. Everything was timed to perfection, we had said goodbye the night before to the lovely girls that looked after us so well in Le Petit Hotel Hanoi, we had a leisurely breakfast and the taxi was there right on the dot of 7.30 to take us to the airport. I'm always a little suspicious when everything runs so smoothly and today would prove that my instincts are good. I checked in without a problem, Hanoi airport is probably one of the more efficient airports on the planet. Lis wasn't due to check in for another hour so we waited a while then I made my way through ... read more

Last night we found another Laos BBQ place not far from the hotel. It was a busy place and we were the only westerners there. Ed was feeling about off colour so he only had a few bits of pork. They played games near a very rob irate mirrored shrine whilst Cas and I ate the soup and fresh veg which was very fresh and delicious. It's the first time that I've had beer served with ice. We turned the lights off to settle the kids when there was knock at the door with an additional bed, making four in total, and it meant that Ed and Hat wouldn't disturb each other. We rose late and skipped the hotel breakfast which was pretty poor. Instead, we headed to the Cafe Benito again for very Parisian croissants ... read more

We took a taxi about 9.15 to the airport to catch our flight to China. But things didn't quite unfold as planned. It turns out that our plane lands at Nanking before arriving at Kying. The Chinese aiming ration policy treats this as two ports of entry and therefore we need a tourist visa rather than our planned 72 hour transit visa. The check-in staff were very helpful and advised us to go to the Chinese Eastern Airways ticket office to change our flight to tomorrow as this as a direct flight to Kunming. The whole thing took all morning to sort out, but we did it. We had a great lunch in town and everyone was feeling settled. We looked into taking a taxi to Thsiland for tea, but the travel time was too much ... read more

Going around again It's been ages since I wrote one of these (it's Kris, by the way), but I felt that I should probably put something on about our recent adventures, so here goes... Ten years ago, back in 2006, we gave up our jobs, packed up our house and left for the unknown in Thailand. Somehow it turned into a lifestyle, we became English teachers and 5 country residences later (Thailand-Spain-Vietnam-China-Ukraine) 2016 has become a year of revisits. After leaving Ukraine in February we first had a trip to Madrid (where we lived in 2008) for a holiday, then we moved to Thailand (where it all began). Then, in May we visited Laos, one of the first countries we visited back in 2006 after arriving in Thailand. (Actually, as I'm finishing this blog, we just ... read more

Was etwa 1,60 Euro sind. Der Japaner You zum Beispiel: ... read more

This is a place that's often left unrecommended by visitors, not many rave about it; books and people would say ah two days is enough. And we didn't expect to stay, it was a tactical point to open up more southern Laos for us, we were happy and exhausted leaving the stunning Nong Khiaw! And here, we actually stayed a week, it would be our last Laos stop. We found many gems, un-postcard worthy perhaps, but cherished artifacts for our memories. Maybe we like underdogs. Vientiane. What we found here - - Korean food! Oh my, so good. Three nights we'd go for a different Korean restaurant and were so treated with Bibimbap in stone bowl, spicy kimchi stew, the delightful little Banchan dishes which are topped up throughout, and the yummy black rice, the cabbage ... read more

Whaaaat a stressful day of travel! First yesterday, it wasn't! Down for breakfast after a strangely good night on the concrete mattresses, to find not much left. Had heard people going down at 7, but Sam was dead to the world so I finally woke her up at 8.15. To be fair, she was wide awake and out of the room in 5 minutes, dressed and everything. Skills! But a lot of stuff had run out. Luckily Moon from the Phillipines was on fried egg duty and I had 2, tea, bananas, all was good. I had brought our yet-again unspeakable laundry down but they didn't do it, flapped a had at the street and off I trotted to the backpackers next door where it was weighed, 3.5kg, cost £3, back at 6pm. Let's hope they ... read more

We got up at 6am to see the morning alms giving ceremony, which happens just at the end of our road. The LP gives info about how to behave at this. Needless to say, a great number of tourists were totally non-respectful, which spoilt it for us. At the end of our road there were women selling food for the monks. Really crappy snacks, cheap biscuits etc. Firstly, it isn't really something tourists should do, we are not Buddhist, and also it should be high quality rice in rice baskets, not ugly plastic trays or plastic bags. So we didn't buy anything. Apparently the rice sold is very poor quality and has made the monks sick! We could see a line of little plastic chairs, mostly empty, on the other side of the road, and a ... read more
