It's been approximately four years since my last blog entry but, alas, it is time to start it up again. A lot has happened in the past four years. After finishing up my post in Malawi, I then went back to the United States, finished some pre-med requirements, and started medical school at the University of California-Irvine. Last summer I had the amazing opportunity to go to Tanzania with ten of my classmates to teach ultrasound technology to 100+ clinical officers and other healthcare providers in the town of Mwanza on Lake Victoria. The trip ended with a safari in the Serengeti/Ngorogoro and a treacherous hike up Mount Kilimanjaro. While I did not blog about these experiences, the most memorable was probably getting food poisoning on my first day up Kilimanjaro and forcing myself to make ... read more

We got dropped off in the centre of Vientiane and were just walking up the road to our hostel when we bumped into some friends we had made tubing, Yvonne and Freddie from Frankfurt, who happened to be staying in the same hostel. We checked into a dorm and picked up two more people (Tano from Vietnam and Simon from Germany) who were single travellers and headed out for a drink. We all sat together in a bar overlooking the night market and then headed to a local street food restaurant. Wow, Laos food can actually be tasty when you go to the right place! Next day was a bit miserable and drizzly so we all sat chatting at the hostel waiting for some sun. Eventually it came and we explored a few temples, some monuments ... read more

The capitol of Laos - Vientiane is a nice enough city to stroll around for a day or two and that is precisely what I did for my time here. Not a whole lot to write about. I found an overpriced guesthouse for $80,000kip. The rooms here are all overpriced and demand far outweighs the supply so I considered myself lucky. I walked about the city took in the various Wats that dot the streets, went to the museum, and made friends with some locals. All pretty standard stuff. The museum however was a little odd. The first floor had a couple of dinosaur bones, but the second floor was dedicated to the "glorious rise" of the People's Party and the resounding defeat they handed to the "American Imperialists". Commie propaganda at its best. The city ... read more

We are now half way through our tour and I still can't believe it. I really have to keep telling myself that we are in Asia, and especially in Laos. I never thought I'd ever come here, but it really is amazing. The food has really been incredible and the people are so friendly. I knew I would enjoy myself and find Asia interesting, but I never knew I would be having this much fun and learning so much and having such a great time doing it. Today is our only full day in Vientiane, Laos so we started a day with a tour of the city. Of course our first stop is a local temple. Our guide joked with us that OAT does not stand for Overseas Adventure Travel, but stands for Oh, Another Temple. ... read more

Today we are flying to Vientiane so everyone on our tour loaded all of our bags onto a bus, but first we all got on some more tuk tuks for a tour of the royal palace. The palace was really beautiful. Unfortunately you are not allowed to take any pictures so all I have are pictures of the outside as well as the Temple on the grounds. We then took the tuk tuks to the edge of town where we met the bus to take us to the airport. Luang Prabang airport only has two gates, but when we arrived there were a lot of people waiting to check in for several flights. It took quite a while for everyone to check in and then we all had to go through security and by the time ... read more

We decided it was time for a splurge when we reached Vientiane. The Golden Sun Hotelturned out to be exactly what we needed, especially after we changed rooms when the noise from the kitchen was just too much at 6am! Every day we did something touristy in the morning then returned for an afternoon relaxing by the pool. At US$44 a night it was certainly pushing our budget but it was well worth it. On our first night we walked out to the bank of the Mekong where many Laotians were taking an early evening stroll. The temperature was lovely and we enjoyed stretching our legs around Cho Aravong Park stopping to admire the huge statue which stands as a memorial to the man after whom the park was named. We also passed through some of ... read more

Staying in a hostel in Vientiane. Bit of a come-down after the nice hotels we have had - with unisex toilet and shower cubicles on the ground floor and bunk bed dormitories. But we have to take the good with the not so good. Went sightseeing although not a vast amount t see, but there is a golden stupa That Luang which is the national symbol, and also a Victory Arch called Patricia. Apparently the americans gave Laos some concrete to build a runway and they built (but never finished) the arch instead. In the evening we went to the cinema to see Office Christmas Party - lots of slapstick humour. Next a full day bus journey to Savannakhet. There are buses and buses, and we have seen many different grades. This had the appearance of ... read more

ToVientiane: The Laos Capital Vientiane was only meant to be a stop to get to Ho Chi Minh City from where I had the flight home on the 13th. Leaving Luang Prabang if anything I wished I could prolong the stay in LP. My hosts in LP, a young couple managing the guest house was so kind and helpful. He even loaned me 200,000 kips (that is unit in Laos, and is only about 15 USD) when I had no kips and had to wait for the next day to change money. But I had to stick to my itinerary. I had two options, the day bus or night bus. I picked the day bus as I could not cancel my hotel booking in Vientiane for the night. I had read that day trip, even though ... read more

After running around seeing most of the major sites of Vientiane over the past couple of days it was time for something more sedate so a visit to the national museum was in order. It is only a couple of blocks from the hotel, but then just about everything in Vientiane is only a couple of blocks from the hotel. The museum is a long two story colonial building that apparently became the national museum in 1985. The building itself is in dire need of restoration and some of the papier-mache models look like they were made by school children. The place has the feel of a 1950's museum and some of the English misspellings are very amusing but despite its shortcomings the museum does a pretty reasonable job of describing the history of Laos from ... read more

After a really good Pad Thai and a couple of beer lao at a makeshift restaurant on the Mekong waterfront last night I decided to walk off the calories today. My first port of call was the COPE visitors centre. The Cooperative orthotic and prosthetic enterprise is a non-profit organisation that provides care and support to UXO survivors. The visitors centre educates about the devastating consequences of war and it's hard to think of a more fitting place than Laos to do so. Between 1964 and 1973 the US army dropped over 2,000,000 tons of ordnance on Laos making it the most heavily bombed country per capita in history. Of the over 270 million sub-munitions dropped 80 million failed to explode. Cluster munitions, bomb casings containing up to 200 smaller 'bombies' were designed to explode on ... read more
