Sarah: Ok, so, it's not that we didn't like Vientiane, or didn't try to get involved with the touristy things but there just isn't really much to say here. So sorry. But all must be recorded on the blog, so here I go! We arrived via the highly rated (by me) Lao Airlines from Hanoi. I think the rating was probably increased due to the amount of recent long buses and overnighter journeys. A little cheese and ham sarnie and drink provided on our 50 minute flight went a long way! This was on top of our last lunch in Hanoi before we left, where I took the chance to have one more Hue pancake (pork and shrimp pancake self-wrapped in rice paper with herbs) and Nick went for a bowl of rice noodles with all ... read more

I’m having breakfast of croissant and coffee at La Benneton, a French bakery near my hostel in central Vientiane. From the bakery’s veranda, the classical music playing in the background and the drone of conversation of French expats at a nearby table make this section of Southeast Asia feel like Western Europe. Lingering elements of French culture are common in Laos – Vientiane features dozens of budget cafes serving European baked goods, and these establishments typify Vientiane’s relaxed pace. Smiles are pasted on the servers’ faces, and their charming disposition only makes you want to linger more and revel in the languidness. I have arrived in Vientiane 12 hours ago with no other plan than to explore as much as I can before heading to Luang Prabang. I’ve decided to dive in on my own terms ... read more

The very early hours of today started as yesterday ended, generally trying desperately to sleep in a seemingly impossible situation! The bus finally came to its first stop at 01.30 ?dinner time! Filing out the cramped bus and into a waiting restaurant, we were all served up soup containing dubious pieces of ?meat and noodles. I was trying to enjoy it until someone noticed a huge spider under my chair, carrying a half eaten butterfly! Suddenly my appetite disappeared. Squeezing back on the bus we carried on our journey. I don't recall lying awake all night, so must of managed to nod off a few times until finally waking at 5ish with a migraine! With my medication being in my bag in the hold there wasn't a lot I could do other than throw up and ... read more

At first glance, Laos can seem expensive until you remember that 6,500 Kip approximately equals $1 Canadian. The government appears to be working hard to improve the lives of the people in Laos. This includes improving nutrition for children, as well as health care. The country has been polio-free for several years and is working on eradicating measles although it isn't easy to reach some of the mountain tribes for vaccination, something the mountain people aren't necessarily enthusiastic about. The government has recently passed a new law to regulate alcoholic beverages. Venues offering these cannot be located near healthcare and education centers, state offices, religious venues, embassies, public parks, opera houses, passenger vehicle stations, petrol stations, sports complexes, and factories, which must limit possibilities. In addition, advertisements for alcoholic be... read more

My pick up for the bus trip to Vientiane was earlier than expected, around 7.30am. Thankfully I was ready and at reception when he arrived with an electric people mover, definately a first. The bus to Vientiane was a full sized coach and I claimed a seat in the back corner with plenty of leg room and the only window that opened, I later discovered. Many of the locals suffered from motion sickness on this trip. Sick bags were handed out before we left and my big packet of wet ones was passed around as people needed them. I thought there was a new road between Phonsavan and Vientiane, but we certainly didn't travel it. Some of the road through the mountains was gravel and I held my breath more than once as the huge bus ... read more

Arriving at Vientiane, the capital of Laos, in the late afternoon, Stephanie, Thomas and I found a cute little hostel in the centre of the city. The next two day we decided to rent fancy bikes to discover the beauties of the city. We visited all the Buddhist temples and other monuments, "dont" the famous Wat Si Saket, known as the oldest temple in the capital and Patuxia, Vientians replica of the Arc de Triomphe. Vientiane isn't only the capital of Laos, it is also and mainly the city where my grandmother, Samboun (second wife of maternal grandfather) comes from. Samboun returned to live for a few months in her home country after my grandfather passed away. Stephanie and I were very lucky to have our own private guide in this city. Samboun brought us to ... read more

Hi All--Diane here. This itty bitty computer is new to me, but will try. This is day 9 of our 19 day trip--almost 1/2 way. It is our 4th day in Laos, a rural, very laid back, happy country. Everyone greets us with a smile, a small bow and palms together in front of their chins. We are learning much about Buddhism, all very positive. 30% of Laotians are Animists, however, a quite superstitious faith whereby they believe that both animate and inanimate objects have a spirit. For instance, one will see flowers tied to the front hood of a car to please the spirit of the car so it won't have an accident. All homes have 4 ft high "spirit houses" out front which pleases the spirit of the house and the land it sits ... read more

Interesting stories are heard from guides about life in their country. Following is one about Laotian women giving birth. 2-3 days prior to a birth the woman goes to the hospital. However, if in a rural area a mid-wife is brought in. The husband is relegated to outside the house and his job is to make a tea that is concocted from herbal plants found in the wild forests. During birth the mother's hands are tied with rope to an overhead beam and she squats low while the mid-wife calls out encouragement. After birth the mother and child do not leave the home for a month but family and friends come to visit daily. It becomes a social time. and the mothers mother stays to help take care of the birth mother and baby, as well ... read more

But here we are in Vientiane smooth as silk and happy to be landed safe and sound, Air Asia's woes receding into the background. That seamless early morning journey found me sat next to a Lao diplomat from the consulate in Brunei. Educated in Economics and Politics in Moscow, a polyglot speaking Lao, Russian, English, and Japanese. Those were the ones he told me about. Not on official business he said. After a few days he would be driving home to Luang Prabang to see his elderly father. A return to where he grew up. Conversation flowed onto the Laos state of political affairs. He said that promises which the government had made to the Asian Economic Community (AEC) to increase the standard of living for the Lao people by 2020 have caused the government to ... read more

Country number 3, Thailand, after arriving in Bangkok late in the evening with little time to explore, I left early the next morning for Phuket a large island with, I now know, a somewhat dubious reputation for all things 'ping pong' and well, sleaze. It’s only one resort really, Patong Beach and yes having spent one evening in it, its reputation is not undeserved.......This place makes Banus of a night look like a Legion of Mary group outing. I was staying in a guest house out of town, run by a Swedish guy and his Thai partner, small, just five rooms, nothing sleazy just a straight up guesthouse...but just for guys. Hey I got to optimise my chances!!!! Phuket is ok, but like any other holiday island, lots of tourists, hotels, restaurants. It’s the Islands off ... read more
