(P) Our bus from Tha Khek to Savannakhet had 2 motorbikes on its roof and was full to bursting. I have to admit it wasn't the most comfortable journey we've made, consisting of 5 hours on a plastic stool in the aisle with no backrest. But the locals don't even think twice about travelling like this (we noticed most buses were second-hand from South Korea and Japan, with the adverts still on!). Older locals tend to snack on fruit and even just leaves, whereas the younger ones are already converted to crisps. On the bus, we met Ellen and Trevor (from U.S.A. and Oz respectively) and booked a Two-Day Forest Trek and Homestay to Ban Phonsim Village tour together with them at the more-than-helpful Savannakhet Tourist Office. We booked a day later than we had planned ... read more

A broken down bus, a train, a tuk-tuk, a school bus, a double-decker pick-up truck, and van later, we had arrived in Laos. The border crossing was a breeze contrary to our worst fears. We arrived in a little sleepy Laos town called Pakse in the evening and were greeted by 15 or so giggling children yelling “Sabaidy”, which is the Lao word for hello. With our guards way up from our experiences in Bangkok, we were a bit apprehensive, but when we realized that the children were just interested in us, it was all very charming. The kids ran around, some doing cartwheels, asking Chris to flex his muscles and giving me little kisses on my hand. We knew right away that Laos was going to be different than Bangkok. Pakse is a small town ... read more

After getting to know Cerys we decided that we were going to spend the next 3 days with her riding around the Bolaven Plateau sightseeing. We picked up our bikes in the morning and off we went, after about 5 mins of driving around trying to find a petrol station Phil’s bike decided to run out of petrol, so that left me and Cerys riding aimlessly around Paske trying to find a garage, when we found one we then came across another hurdle, what the hell are we going to put it in!!! They ended up putting about a dollars worth of petrol in a sandwich bag!!! It was so funny, when we got back to Phil we then had to try and get the petrol into the bike without spilling it, if you have ever ... read more

I arrived in Paxse and the first thing I noticed was the wind! Big gusts of wind whirling dust everywhere. Of course the wind concerned me because as it was I was going to be climbing uphill for the whole first day of my Bolaven cycling loop. I asked a couple of people and apparently, the wind is a constant feature here in this area : ( Mr. Boune at Green Discovery was very helpful with his insight to the area. He confirmed the route I was taking was the best way to go, easing my mind somewhat. I still had concerns about making it up the 40km climb! Mr. Vong at the Saibady 2 Guesthouse loves to use his immaculate French and he definitely is exuberant as the LP describes him. I set out the ... read more

With the night train to Bangkok full up, I had little alternative but to spend a bonus day in laid back Vientiane, the capital city of Laos. For a capital, its a fairly easy going place and it was a pretty good stop to rest and recouperate following the mayhem of Vang Vieng. While enjoying the time away from both other travellers and the accompanying revellry and beer, I sat in an open air restaurant at a table by the pavement with my book and enjoyed the peace and quiet and early evening ambiance of the town. After a while, I was joined by 4 passing Irish lads who had been on the bus alongside me from Vang Vieng and before I knew it, there were 15 of them and we were in a shady Lao ... read more

Friday 26th October - Kietnarong and Jon and I arrived at Udon Thani and they saw me onto the bus to take me to NongKai. I then got a tuk tuk to the Border Control point where you are on your own as tuk tuks not allowed any further. You line up and then it is onto a bus over the Friendship Bridge dividing Thailand and Laos where you get a visa into Laos. Once this was done, I got a taxi into Vientiane, the capital of Laos and went to the Sausayle Guest House. My luggage was deposited on the pavement while I checked whether there was a room as there was big celebrations in the city. I was recognised from my prior visit and yes, there was a room. Before I had a chance ... read more

So, since we last wrote, decided to take a bike out again and explore even more of Southern Laos! It was a 5 day figure of 8 we ended up doing, and it was brilliant! The first day we got up at 6.00 but spent a while buying things for our trip (like rain macs (always useful!) and extra petrol should we run out! Haha, and knowing Ben's embarassingly long track record of running out petrol!) We set off happy to be on a good (well,... surfaced) road heading towards Pahxong (Paksong). We intended to visit a couple of waterfalls, but ended up stopping off to see 4 stunning waterfalls. We didn't get to Paksong until 3.00 keen to buy some of the famous coffee, but failed spectacularly, so continued on to Sekong. It was ... read more

After the excitement of the Gibbon Experience, we had a very different couple of days, involving the Slow Boat. Which is exactly what it was, taking 2 days from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang, via an overnight stop in a random little town; lit only by candlelight and with the funniest menus due to the number of spelling mistakes, that only small children should find amusing...but well...that's the level of my humour. Arriving in Luang Prabang was a pleasant surprise as it was very French, with quaint guesthouses and a night market that dominated the narrow street on embroided carpets, softly lit by suspended light-bulbs. We spent time at some historic temples, one with a beautiful sunset, though it really was through rose-tinted glasses that I say this, as I was happily snapping away, raving to ... read more

The Animist Village The last leg of the tour was the animist village, after the most disgusting lunch I have ever eaten!!! picture this a mosquito ridden table, 4 scabby dogs, 2 fat pigs, 1 even fatter puppy, 2 flea ridden kittens all randomly jumping up on the table, wrapping themselves round your leg, sniffing your food.....topped of by the most god damn awful food ever...cold soup with soggy vege floating round in it and soggy rank rice with some brown stuff inside that is apparently called meat. I ate 5 bananas instead! Anyway so we headed off to Katou Village which is an animist village. Animist is a culture where its all about the spirit, spirit in trees, ants, dogs, people everything. The most extreme cases don't work on the land as they don't ... read more

Bolaven Plateau Asia » Laos » Bolaven Plateau By Laur4April 9th 2007Laura Fowler Bolaven Plateau... We went on a tour today of the surrounding area called the Bolaven Plateau...was incredible! We drove right into the jungle to the Yuang Waterfalls, 120m high. You couldn't get very close but the view was amazing!! Would love to come again in the wet season...it would be incredible. Felt like Tarzan was going to come swinging out of the trees at any minute! We then visted a tea and coffee plantation and then went to Giang Waterfalls. Not as big as Yuang but much more spectacular. Check out the pictures....The water was so damn cold and I don't know what... read more
