Sabaidee!! Now we continued after a nice time around Tha Khaek to Pakse. The busride was not really the most comfortable one but is was definetly a busride that will stay in our minds. Normally the ride from Tha Khaek to Pakse should last around 5 hours, we took around 11!!! And that because of many reasons. First our driver had to deliver lots of tires that were packed on top of the bus to a place he could not find in Savannaket. So we drove around in a citytourlike loop in Savannaket, unloaded the tires, loaded them again on top, then again looking for the right place!! After 1 hour not finding the owner of this tires we continued to Pakse, and suddenly the engine of our bus made strange noises, one time we lost ... read more

The first thing we did in Pakse after finding some accommodation was to go to the Green Discovery office to put our names down for the 2 day Treetop Adventure starting on the 10th. We hoped that a couple more people would put their names down by the time we got back from our 4 day motorbike trip to make the price more affordable. We then had dinner and organised a couple of nice Honda bikes for $6.50 a day each for the next 4 days. We left early the following day and after riding about 40 km stopped at Phasoume Waterfall to take a few photos, check out the small cultural village, and have a short walk around the area. After that we rode another 40 km or so before turning off and riding up ... read more

We soon found ourselves back in Pakxe which we were going to use as a base for a couple of excursions to the surrounding sites. We felt that Pakxe itself had very few star attractions to recommend it for more than a day (two at most), but it was in a great location for a visit to Wat Phou and the Bolaven Plateau, and more importantly for our onward flight to Louang Prabang aboard Lao Airlines (yikes). Also one of the evenings we had planned to treat ourselves to a night in a real life palace – the Champasak Palace, but more about that later. For our two days seeing the surrounding area we had decided not to pay out for tours, which would ultimately limit us to someone else’s itinerary, but brave it and hire ... read more

So from Kratie we had a nice easy bus journey across the border in to Laos - parting with a few mysterious dollars at the border on request of the border guard! We arrived in Pakse which didn't really seem much different to Kratie and after a bit of wandering around, turning down a few hotels, we settled in to the pretty cheap and standard Lankham Hotel. Then we were at a bit of a loss! Didn't seem to be anyone hassling us for things to do (or for tuk tuks etc.), we found the office for Green Explorer but there treks were really pricey, and the local tourist office was closed. We had a drink on the top floor of a swanky hotel and then a curry (very nice!) and chatted about what we could ... read more

Our next stop in Laos was Pakse, founded by the French in 1905 as an administrative outpost, it sits on the Mekong River and the Se Don River. It is a very small town with not much to do at all. We had the unfortunate pleasure in staying there for 2 nights because Tony got ill with a very high fever. We did not do much here, just pottered and lounged around in our hotel room, at Sabaidy 2 Guesthouse (68,000 kip a night). From here we headed in land to Tad Lo. Our journey was interesting to say the least, our bus looked like it was ready for the scrap heap, with holes in the floor covered with planks of wood, dents in the front and side, the front of the bus had a massive ... read more

Pakse We decided to head for Pakse in southern Laos as we were all keen for Cambodia and we’d heard the bus journey into Hanoi was horrendous - i.e. sick bags are distributed at the start! We booked ourselves tickets on the sleeping bus from Vientiene and a sleeping bus it was. Proper flat beds with mattresses, blankets and pillows! We got the back row which was 4 mattresses in a row. Was a fairly bouncy journey but still the best bus ride I’ve ever experienced. Pakse is a sleepy little town with not too much going on except for its proximity to the Bolaven Plateau which has a much cooler climate and is home to tea and coffee plantations as well as some ethnic villages which we could visit. Also in Pakse is great pizza, ... read more

Dear All, From Vientiane (vietnamese visas in hand) we took an over night bus down to a town called Pakse. The bus is worth mentioning as we had these amazingly cushty beds with duvets and air con and fluffy pillows and people walking around handing out snacks - so all in all quite luxurious! When I said before I was still yet to see the sleepy towns of Laos people kept telling me about well this was definately it. It is quite literally a ghost town where even the locals don't seem to be on the streets. The whole town consists of one road with a fruit market at the end of it. We were happy however to be here so checked into a nice little guesthouse on the mekong river. When seeing our friend Lea ... read more
