Thursday, 16th May 2013, 10.30pm My ultimate trip to the Land of Rising Sun & I'm determined to complete it on a perfect note as I journeyed across Western Honshu & Kyushu. I boarded Jetstar Airways flight JQ 63 to embark on my 4,940km journey to the city of Osaka. For the Singapore-Osaka leg, I was onboard the A330-200 double-aisled flight which was able to accomodate 303 passengers on a 2-4-2 configuration. Flight time was reduced to a mere 6 hours & 30 minutes thanks to the direct overnight hop to Kansai Airport. Having just finished work at 5.30pm, I had barely enough time to rush home for a quick shower and dinner before making my way to the airport for the 10.30pm flight. My body was exhausted even though I was fully aware that this ... read more

Nagasaki The journey to Nagasaki from Tokyo involves 2 Shinkansens (bullet trains or super fast express as it’s called here) & 1 Limited Express train – about 7 hours in all. Swapping trains was easy as we had bookings and all we did was show the station staff the tickets and they directed us to the right platform (or station even as the Limited Express & Local trains don’t use the same stations as the Shinkansens). Service on all is simple, helpful and effective. Heading out at speed we suddenly see Mount Fuji in all its glory towering above everything nearby. It is pretty impressive and we can see why it’s such an icon in Japan. Ironic as we had just booked a day out at a park in Hakone (for our return to ... read more

Day 6 After another reasonable breakfast, even though there was no toaster, we made our way downstairs to the coach, which was parked on a nearby bridge as the road along side the hotel was too narrow. As we were leaving, we were waved off by two of the hotel staff - the thing to remember is the custom is to keep on waving until you can no longer see them! We had a 2 hour journey to Nagasaki, where we would be visiting the site of the 2nd atom bomb detonation. Along the way we were entertained by our guide Lim, whom we now realise is completly mad. Aswell as explaining to us that we were going for a "see look" at different places that day, and that when we stop for a toilet break ... read more

Arriving around lunchtime after another great experience on the Japanese railway system, we found ourselves on the station concourse enjoying the free entertainment provided by a dancing troupe in colourful (and short) costumes. These girls were like cheerleaders, but I'm not sure who they were cheering for. The public transport system???? Is that why the trains are so brilliant? Is there a show on at every station at lunchtime to boost staff moral?? After the show, we hauled our suitcases up and down the overpass stairs so that we could catch a tram to our accommodation. The hostel is good, however it is slightly more frayed around the edges than other places we have stayed. The staff were excellent, settling us in, and pointed us in the direction of a place to eat lunch. We ate ... read more

Nagasaki is bustling when I arrived on a train from Beppu. They have a tram system and I just have to figure out which to take for my hostel. I found tram #3 and soon enough I found myself crossing a stone bridge and Akari GH is just on the other side, very easy to find. Reception was friendly and it seems busy, my room is full of backpackers. I need dinner and they directed me to a Chinese restaurant nearby to try out champon, a ramen featuring seafood, pork and veggies in a white salt based broth. Boy what a disappointment, I did not like it! So now I marked it, never try it again even it is a famous dish here. Sleep came quickly as I was tired and the next morning it was ... read more

So I was talking to a girl at salsa class about Taiwan two weekends ago. I said that’s where I would’ve liked to have gone for summer break, but it didn’t happen (since I took the TESOL). She said I should just go for Chuseok. Chuseok is a major Korean holiday that means a 4-day weekend for me. Wow, I thought. She’s right. I could just buy a ticket and go. That was Saturday night the weekend before the holiday weekend. So Sunday I started looking at tickets. Taiwan turned out to be a no-go. The tickets were more money than I wanted to pay and the flights that were still open didn’t make good use of the time I had. But by then I had travel fever. I started looking at where I could go. ... read more

First steps into Kyushu see me in the largest city namely Fukuoka and trying to navigate my way out of the world's (seemingly) largest train station. Find my way out I did and was even able to find my hotel successfully even though there were three buildings of the same name on the same street!!! The temperature was notably higher here than I had experienced previously which made it an effort to do anything but I mustered up some energy and took myself off to hunt out the nearby shrines and temples as well a strange game going on in the park that looked like a cross between golf and croquet. It got so hot by the middle of the afternoon that they had started handing out free ice lollies near to the station and I ... read more

Een hoop gezien, een hoop gedaan! Na een ontbijt in het hotel zelf (erg makkelijk!), standen we allemaal om 8:30 klaar voor een drukke dag. We zouden veel dingen gaan bekijken.

From outside the restaurant seems small and intimate, like the entrance to a house. A rectangular pond has been dug flat into the pavement. There are goldfish in it and little else- orange flames on the surface, flickering slowly over weeds. There is a fat stone slab for a bridge. A Sushi menu hangs by the door. The writing is red; Japanese characters on laminated white. Some are black, and when you look closely the black ones are in fact scratchy drawings: big fish, small fish, eel, octopus, squid, shrimp, and a prawn. I have to duck to get inside. The first room is dark and buzzing with excitement. From somewhere I can hear laughter- a roar, high pitched screams, clapping and singing. From the kitchen comes the hot waft of a deep fat fryer. I’m ... read more
