Nagasaki, Japan-Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ship Manufacturing Facility Can you imagine, we are back in Nagasaki, Japan? Since we already visited Ground Zero and the Peace Park, we are going to do something totally different and go on a tour of the shipbuilding plant where the ship we are on now, the Sapphire Princess was built. We turn in our names at the tour desk so the Mitsubishi can run security checks on each person taking the tour. Later in the day we get our tickets, so I guess we passed ;-) Our tour will take us to two Mitsubishi plants; one across the harbor from where our ship is docked and the other a few miles away at another harbor. We first were told, “No pictures” in any of the areas except the museum. We started ... read more

Atomic Bombs, Peace and a Lunar Eclipse over Nagasaki Nagasaki, Japan Today was an emotional day as we headed off to the Nagasaki Peace Park and the WWII Atomic Bomb Museum at Ground Zero. Our bus took us through the city of Nagasaki and over the hills to the Peace Park developed after WWII as a place to study and commemorate peace between all peoples on the earth. Countries from all over the world have contributed monuments to the park and signed agreements to help promote peace around the world. The Park was an emotional and educating experience. There was a monument commemorating peace and highlighting the dire need for water by the survivors immediately after the blast. We could not believe it when a well dressed Japanese gentleman who was standing at the monument point ... read more

We woke up, slightly groggy from the night before. I think it was around nine when we got up. We showered, dressed, and finished packing up all our stuff. We left our stuff at the reception and asked them about what temples we should visit. No visit to Japan is complete without a visit to some kind of temple or shrine. We got the lovely blokes at reception to write out in Japanese what charms we needed. They were stars! Then we headed off to follow their recommendations. We walked for about ten to fifteen minutes following the river. We found the shrine, but since we were starving, we headed to the nearest Lawson's for breakfast. There was only one salami and cheese set, so we had to shared it. We sat outside on the steps, ... read more

We got up at eight o'clock, that's when the hot water was turned on in the hostel. We left the hostel around nine ish to head to the ferry port for our trip to Battleship Island. We took the tram for a few stops. The journey was pretty quick about 15 minutes. I think we stayed on the same tram and didn't have to change. We were so pleased when we saw a convenient store as soon as we got off the tram. We headed straight there to pick up some breakfast. We got the 'Breakfast of Champions' that we had discovered in Kyoto. It's a cheese and salami slice package and bloody delicious, it's cheap, too, only a couple of dollars. I also got a coffee and a mini-omurice thingy. I love omurice, but a ... read more

We awoke at the crack of dawn, after about four or maybe five hours sleep. We had stayed the night in a hotel close to the airport. It was really nice, not really a hotel, but an officetel, where they rented some of the apartments. Honestly, the apartment we stayed in was nice and bigger than the one I live in. They also offered a free pick-up and drop-off service to Incheon. Not bad for 55,000 won for the two of us, I think it was called Crown Guesthouse and I would definitely use them again in the future. We got to Incheon and found our check-in desks. It was still just over two hours before take-off, so the desks weren't open yet, so we queued up and waited for them to open, which they did ... read more

21stMarch – Nagasaki Our final port for Japan and we have been so impressed with their culture, cleanliness and hospitality. Another lovely Spring day, we thought the blossom would be out here in Nagasaki but we are still a bit early. Nagasaki is the capital of the prefecture on the island of Kyushu (the third largest) and it is where the second atomic bomb was detonated in August 1945 ending the Second World War. I think we knew we were going to be ‘templed out’ so our trip was out to the Shimabara peninsula. Religion still reared its head as in the city of Shimabara there was a castle built in 1625 which now houses a small museum with exhibits of early Christianity in Japan. Christianity was banned in 1587 and in 1597, 26 Christians were ... read more

Auringon lasku alkoi jälleen lähestyä joten eilinen yritys uusiksi ja suunnistin kohti köysirataa mt. Inasalle. Löysin yhden etsimistäni levyistä sopuhintaan ja sitten yhden u... read more

Monday-Day Ten Nagasaki- Kyushu Island We docked in this beautiful harbour side city and disembarked with the mission to find "The Peace Park" & Atomic Bomb museum and anything else connected with the nuclear bomb which destroyed Nagasaki at 11-02am 9 August 1945. We have docked right in the city and there were ample stalls set up with maps and information and willing English speakers. We purchased an all day tram ticket for ¥500 each and with some very clear instructions we set off. Within a 5 minute walk of the terminal you catch No5 tram at stop no 48 Oura Kaigan Dori, get off 2 stops later at No 31 Tsuki- Machi, cross the road and get on No1 tram to stop no 19 Matsuyama-Machi ( plenty of English signs and maps). Sunday, 19th May 2013 Still, I was excited to picture myself among the replications of the Dutch windmills and the beautiful houses along the canals. Leg #1: Nagasaki Station >> Huis Ten Bosch Station At the beginning of the day, I boarded the JR Seaside Liner train to Huis Ten Bosch, about an hour ride from Nagasaki Station. Huis Ten Bosch is a family-orientated theme park inspired after the original residence of the Dutch Royal Family of the same name. I chanced upon Huis during my travel research and since my ride was fully paid for by the Japan Rail Pass, I had no qualms about visiting it as a side trip from Nagasaki city. The modern Huis Ten Bosch train station that greeted me upon arrival was an attraction on its own. It's small, it's ... read more

Saturday, 18th May 2013 Three nights in Nagasaki City was just about right as I had ample time exploring the city's museums in an unhurried fashion. Before leaving my hotel this morning, I invested on the Nagasaki Tram Pass which would see me through a day's worth of unlimited rides on the nostalgic tram system. At 500 yen, this was considered a real bargain so long as I made more than four trips on the system (Note: At the end of the day, nine trips were made translating to 1,080 yen). From my hotel in Goto Machi, I boarded the tram heading towards the direction of Urakami Station which would bring me to the doorsteps of the Atomic Bomb Museum and the Peace Memorial Park. This museum was a moving tribute to the many who fell ... read more
