So I rarely know where to begin when I start out a blog, yet I usually have such grand intentions while I'm out to describe every little detail that I can. I will try to walk myself through the night... you just had to be there I suppose. Getting off the ship fairly early just about every day, I venture into town, walking distance from the base. It's probably about 3/4 of a mile or so to get to the Ginza, or shopping area and it's easy enough to branch out from there. The easiest shortcut takes us through a nice park with a soccer field, a small USO annex and across the Albuquerque Bridge. From there, the Arcade (or Ginza) is only a few blocks away. For my first night out, I tagged along ... read more

Finally made it to Sasebo, Japan. This place is such a culture shock and difference from anything I've ever experienced. It's beauty, racism and efficient work all rolled into one. I guess I'll take the good with the bad though. I heard so many mixed reviews of Japan, but most seemed to agree that they didn't like Sasebo. So, I tried to go in with as much of an open mind as I could muster. We pulled in on a Monday morning, getting to the pilot pick up point at about 8am. For anyone who doesn't know, I'm supposed to go up to the bridge to make sure the guys put up the flags at the right time. Honestly, I'm not needed by any stretch of the imagination, but it's really neat to watch the dance ... read more

4th March Got up sharp had things to do and places to go…………………… After breakfast we attended the gym for a body constitution assessment and personal fitness plan. Told what to do to get fitter, even though we seemed to be not to bad for our ages - or so the machines said.. We have to go back towards the end of the cruise for a recheck-he he-we know what that will be like. Goals: to get fitter and maybe loose some weight. Started well with a 2 mile brisk walk around the deck- then, faltered at lunch time - had some cake, afternoon - couldn’t resist the chocs, dinner time- more cake and 2 extra puddings…argh don’t tell our trainer!!! Judi went sun bathing on the top deck-windy and not too warm only 26 today. ... read more

24th Feb While steaming away from Brisbane we thought that it was about time-as we had a couple of days at sea- to become domesticated and properly unpack and place all those empty cases under the bed. Judi enjoyed watching the sea whilst ironing- made it almost a pleasure. 25th Feb Early rise as we were to be sailing through the Whitsunday islands. We were quite excited at the imminent visual delights; however we sat next to a strange Australian man during breakfast who nattered constantly so we missed most of them. He was a poor soul! With a Foo-manchoo beard, he claimed to be a scientist who was out to save the world. Even though he had a broken back from tumbling off a motorbike in the Australian outback at age 18, he said he ... read more

It is 6:00 P.M., Thursday, here in Japan as we leave Nagasaki and head overnight for Busan, South Korea. Please note that when you look on your map for Busan, it may be spelled ´Pusan¡. More to come about Pusan tomorrow. We are now 14 hours ahead of you, so it is 4:00 in the morning on Thursday for the Martin/Doolittles and Sarah Merriwether. Nagasaki is the Japanese city on which the US dropped the second atomic bomb and the one that ended World War II. Japan surrendered 3 days after the second bomb was dropped. Granny Lynne and I got off the ship and went on a tour to the exact site where the bomb exploded. You wouldn?t know today that is where you are standing, except that the Japanese have turned the area into ... read more

After a busy 24 hrs with Chihiro in her lovely MANSON flat in Saitama prefecture, I planned to head southwards to Kyuushuu, on Sunday morning. The trip to Nagasaki was fast! Not a patch on some other trains in the world, the Hikari shinkansen whisked me from Tokyo central to Nagasaki via Shin osaka and Hakata, the terminus of Fukuoka station at the northern most part of Kyuushuu. The trip of 900km took about 8 hrs, that is including some stops of up to 40 mins where I felt it a good to fix the cock up of getting the incorrect adaptor plug for my digital camera. So I got an adaptor for an adaptor!! Apart from a big PHEW! at getting on the remaining train to nagasaki in a hairs breadth at 5pm after grabbing some what ... read more

Ever wonder what a Dutch village would look like if constructed in Japan? ...Well, a Dutch village of course, packed with Japanese tourists! There are windmills, tulips (in spring), wooden shoes, Japanese restaurants, canals, tall ships, museums highlighting the Dutch-Japanese history, classic European cars, and little Japanese kids running around yelling "Sugoi!!!" ("Wow!!!"). It is quite the site! This past Saturday I was down in Nagasaki watching a friend play baseball and decided that while I was in the area I would check out Huis Ten Bosch ("House in the Forest"). With beautiful blue skies and a temperature of around 25 C, it was the perfect day to 'escape Japan' and travel to the Dutch-inspired grounds. Constructed in 1992, this reconstruction of a Dutch village offers everything from beautiful gardens, bicycle rentals, and cute riverside cafes ... read more

Obviously, the visit of the Statendam to Nagasaki on her WWII cruise is a big deal. Representatives of the local TV stations greeted us and passengers are being interviewed as the leave the ship. This evening a representative of the Prefecture Governor’s office will make an appearance. Nagasaki has been an important port of trade from the time Portuguese merchants landed in 1543. As we enter the harbor we pass an LNG tanker. Oil tankers are unloading their cargo on a small island at the mouth of the harbor. Along the shore are tank farms, then dry docks of all sizes and other ship repair facilities. Our guide today is a former English teacher and she has our lessons planned. We ride through downtown Nagasaki, a city of jumbled and varied architecture, past ground zero and ... read more

For one and a half day i visited nagasaki. The city with a rich history as a trading city but also with its fate as the second atomic bomb target. the first day i visited my roots, the dutch slopes. This is the area where the dutch traded with japan. It's funny to know that the dutch where the only one trading with japan for many years. In the evening i traded also something, my book, wich i had finished was traded with another book, 'de vliegeraar'. the second day i visited the hypocentre of the a-bomb, the peace park and the memorial museum. This was very impressive and i found out that i didn't know a lot of these tragic history. the whole area was very impressive and it makes it even more impressive that ... read more
