Xmas Day in the Japan Alps started about 10am with a quick breakfast, then changed into our snowboarding gear an grabbed our newly waxed board an headed for the slopes - spent about 6 hours boarding an getting better an better so started doing the intermediate slopes...got a bit too cocky at one stage when I thought I was ready for the Expert slope..I stopped at the top of the slope an looked over the edge...looked over at Aaron..looked at my life insurance policy an crawled on my ass back over to the intermediate slope instead ;) We went out Xmas Day to meetup with Ashna (London), Rae (Newcastle) & Lydia (London) that we met in Sakura Hostel over a couple weeks in Tokyo. We went to a bar by their Ski Resort, and yet again ... read more

Hakuba - White Xmas In Japan We arrived in Hakuba on Friday 21st December after a 4.5 hour bus from Tokyo - we were expecting some snow when we arrived into Hakuba as its the busy time of year for the Ski Resorts - We werent disappointed as the snow had been falling heavily for the last couple days which meant I nearly disappeared when I got out of the bus.!! Its like nearly 3 feet deep an Im wearing a hooded top so yet again its away shopping for warmer clothes. We contacted our lodge owner who had said he would pick us up at bus station - when we arrived at the lodge is was just the postcard picture we were hoping for - as you can see from the picture. Even better when ... read more

We apologize for the title - bad joke! If the map is not visible try clicking the "Fit Route" button... Our last days of teaching behind us, it was time to say farewell to all of the friends we had made working in Tokyo. We both feel so lucky having met them, we learned so much from these people about Japan, teaching and ourselves. Some teachers were placed alone at a school, or alone in their apartments, or both, so we feel lucky that we were not. What's really nice is that we feel we've made some good friends that we look forward to keep in contact with. With work finished it was time to prepare for the next leg of our journey: travelling through western Japan and then backpacking for 5 months through Southeast Asia. ... read more

I 've walked Nakasendo(from Nihonbashi, Tokyo to Sanjo-ohashi, Kyoto) from March 2007. Nakasendo is road the center of Honshu. It's about 533.9kms(by the Nakasendo book). What a long way!!! But, to walk Nakasendo to goal Kyoto is my challenge. I try it. I live in near Tokyo. So my start point is Nihonbashi, Tokyo. From now on, I 'll write about Nakasendo. See U soon;-) PS I tooked pictures below when I walked in Nakasendo. These are my favorite pictures. And, these picture are last month. ... read more

Ok, so we took an 1 hour bus ride from Nagano to Jigokudani and hiked, in the rain, for around 40 minutes up a mountain with our backpacks, and finally we reached Kourokan Ryokan, where we will bath with the snow monkeys... as soon as the rain stops. The rain didn't stop, so we said "screw it, let's bathe in the Onsen in the rain. As Amit so aptly put it "we will warm up and cool off at the same time, without having to move." The ryokan is locate in the mountains, standing alone like a small fort at the bank of a river. Right across the river is a geyser, with a jet of steam and water shooting out of the ground. All around us are trees standing straight and tall, fading in and ... read more

So after we left Tokyo, we took a train to Nagano, the city that hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics and also well known for the Japanese Snow Monkeys that bathes in the onsen with the humans. The city is also famous for the 3rd largest Buddhist temple in Japan (Senkoji) and soba noodles. Awesome. So we checked into a Ryokan right after we arrived, and walked around the city. The city is small, with it's main road leading from the train station to Senkoji, a 30 minute walk. Along the street are shops in traditional japanese buildings and a few small temples here and there. We stopped in a shop and tried some soba, and I must say it's really really good. By the time we got to the temple, it was getting dark. Lonely Planet ... read more

As I mentioned in my last blog, I've recently gotten into snowboarding. I've been three times this season, and as luck would have it, have managed to organize a fourth! That's right- we've had a bit of a cold spell recently and I'm making the most of it. My friend Matt and I will be heading to Hakuba on Tuesday for three more days of pure bliss. This Wednesday is a national holiday, and seeing as how I have Friday off and an early Tuesday, I decided to take a day off work to go exploring some part of Japan. For the last few weeks I've looked into everywhere from Hokkaido to Okinawa, but when a friend came back last weekend from a snowboarding trip to Gifu (with a great snow report), I made up my ... read more

Every month, every week, every day, every hour. It's never the same. Sometimes I long to be back in Canada. Other days I am just so excited for the next festival or weekend trip. Then there are the days when I just want to sit at home and enjoy my lack of work-related stress. Of course, it's to be expected that a year working in a completely different country and culture will draw varying thoughts and feelings. It's the vast range of them and extreme contrasts within short periods of time that are a little disconcerting at times. The past month or so provides very good examples of some of this roller-coaster ride. A few weeks ago, ACC had some pretty significant staff turnover. I didn't expect that people coming and going would affect me too ... read more

It's now my 2nd day in Cairns, and after a heavy night last night, Dan and I thought it was about time for our first update, so here it is. Apologies if you've emailed me and I haven't replied yet but we've been sitting on these damn slow computers for the past 3 and a 1/2 hours and I'me ready to smash the thing up. We arrived at Narita Airport at about 11am, having flown for 11 and a 1/2 hours caught the skyrail train (just a regular train, not a monoorail as I'd expected) to our hostel. Luckily for us, our hostel was only 2 stops on the subway from the skyrail stop and despite being pointed in completely the wrong direction by an overhelpful Japanese man, we found our hostel with relative ease. Once ... read more

14th January 2007 Board- check, Boots- check, Bindings- check, warm clothes- check, beanie- check, bum pads- check. I was set. My board is beautiful and of course my pants coordinate with the colours on my board, which coordinates with the pattern and colours on my bag. Hey, at least I look the part. My first experience of snowboarding took place at Fuji 10 ski resort, near Narusawa at the base of Mt Fuji. (Wicked!!) Night skiing starts at 5, and is apparently better coz less people and cheaper, so this is what we did. I was scared, excited, nervous and apprehensive (do you get the picture?) but had prepared myself for frustration and total embarassment. I was told it wouldnt be easy, I was told I would hate it and want to give up, I was ... read more
