Just wasted an hour trying to do a nice route map of our trip for you but the WiFi connection here is terrible so you'll just have guess I'm afraid! Anyways, I'm happily sitting in front of a gas heater in our little hotel's lounge gazing out at the snow and trying not to look at the creepy metal bird avec spinning propeller (?!) which keeps staring at me despite having no discernable eyes. For those of you listening to this by way of my father or the infamous Mr Lewis, please do try and stay awake this time - I'm not mentioning any names but watch my eyes Vera! I'm going to blame it on the abilities of those reading it aloud - you can't be putting enough humerous intonation in your voice obviously. I ... read more

Before I begin, Happy New Year to you all and may I beg your pardon on the length of this blog and the rants contain therein. I blame it on that well known female affliction, 'birding widow syndrome'. My mother suffered from a similar malaise, 'sailing widow syndrome' so it must run in the family.   I have come to the conclusion that 1 night sleeping on a futon is fantastic, 2 nights makes you worry you're not doing it right and 3 nights is pure unadulterated agony! Neither of us are getting any younger and we have both got used to the odd joint twinge on a morning but this is just downright silly!  Apart from a proper bed, the other essential item I have now recognised I cannot do without is a chair. Apologies for revisiting ... read more

h2Day 6/7/8/h2 A few hours on the train north to Nagano where the 1998 Winter Olympics were then another hour on a private train and we landed in rainy Yudanaka. It is a sleepy little town, but beautiful! We stayed at the Shimaya Ryokan which was a traditional family run hotel with it's own onsen. Our room was traditional with tatami mat floors and rice paper walls. It's all quite low and Chris was banging his head on the ceiling every few minutes. Because it was raining when we arrived we chilled in our room and then went for dinner at this place called Asashinaya at our hotel man's suggestion. The staff were so nice and we had a big meal with even bigger beers. They gave us this little wooden plaque as a gift for ... read more

I woke up Thursday morning and began a somewhat ridiculous day of travel. I walked to the train station and caught a bus for one hour to the city of Kofu. From there I had to take a train to Shiorijiri, then transfer to a different train to Nagano. I found out when I got to Nagano that the hostel I booked was in Hakuba which was not as close to Nagano as I thought. It was going to be a 5 hour wait for the next bus to Hakuba, so I threw my bag in a train station locker and went for a walk around Nagano. The only thing that I knew to see for sure was the Zenkoji Temple which only opens for one month every 7 years. I looked at a map at ... read more

Host family has been up to no good recently. Like springing second row Blue Man Group tickets on me 20 minutes before the show starts in Roppongi and taking a weekend trip to a beautiful place in Nagano-ken called Karuizawa. Karuizawa to Tokyo is like Nantucket to New York and Boston; its the nature place the rich people go to get away from the heat. It isnt summer yet so Karuizawa the town was pretty empty, only about half the shops were open, but it was nice since it wasn't crowded. It's at a pretty high elevation so the air is crisp and clean; once you get out of the train you can notice a huge difference - not to say that Tokyo's air is bad, its just city vs country highlands. Some of the attractions ... read more

So we made it to Japan in just about one piece! Surprisingly our flights were all on time and our baggage made it with us so we just had to survive one night in Tokyo before heading down to our new home of Iida. We attempted to sleep in the airport but at 11pm it started to close, and we were forced to make a quick exit. We caught a train into Tokyo which took over an hour. We eventually stopped at ‘B-girl’ hotel, yes the name should have given it away but we were too tired to care and wandered into this love hotel to check in. A love hotel is a hotel aimed at ‘sweethearts’ rather than travelers, but after 10pm they let you check in for a whole night at a reduced price. ... read more

So, not including local transport, at least... 9 hours on trains 20 hours on boats 37 hours on planes 346 hours on buses 51 different beds 72 different towns 12 pages of each of our passports 143 days 429 meals 2 broken backpacks far too many beers and a big bag of money later ...and we're in Japan, working in local elementary schools. And that's the end of it. No more backside and soul destroying night-buses, no more nights in bus stations or 24 hour KFCs waiting for connections, no more haggling for everything, no more expensive internet cafes, no more scorching weather and drenching humidity, no more going into 7/11 for 10 minutes just to cool off under the air-con, no more constant hassling for ping-pong shows, tuk-tuks or moto-taxis, marijuana or sexy ladies, no ... read more

We headed to Nagano this past weekend to try and get one last ski weekend in. For those of you with a bad memory, Nagano hosted the Winter Olympics in 1998. We were technically in Hakuba which is a hour north of Nagano which is where all of the skiing events took place during the Olympics. We took the Shinkansen Friday evening and had happy hour on the train for the 75 minute ride. We then took a bus 60 minute bus ride in the rain and ended up at our hotel. It was very sweet looking hotel with a fire burning in the lobby. Our love for the hotel wore off when we walked into our room that had 2 twin beds and a bathroom where the sink and the shower were controlled by the ... read more

Well, my addiction won out again. Instead of saving my ¥en and being responsible, I signed up for another snowboarding tour, this time to Nagano. A lot of people from the Niigata tour would be there, and this time, there were 2 buses going, and 60-80 people. The pattern was much the same as the last trip. Meet up, get on the bus - this time our seats had been allocated - make sure you stock up on drinks, and then off we went. I found it a lot harder to sleep this time around, Even though I was tired, and desperate to sleep, my brain wouldn't switch off and I was focused on all the things I would need to get done in time for my departure. I met a few new paople on this ... read more

The ski season starts in Japan around beginning to mid of December. There are plenty of ski resorts along the West coast and the Central mountain range of various sizes. It is possible to do day trips from Tokyo within short distance. There are even high speed trains which connect to some resorts in a 1 hour direct link with free onsen (hot bath) in the train station to relax while waiting for the return train. Tokyo itself sees very little snow since it is at the warmer East coast and temperatures drop even at night not below freezing. The West is influenced by the Chinese-Siberian climate and snowfall is plenty with several meters of snow during January and February. The air is very dry and therefore the snow has a very good powder texture. We ... read more
