After then end of the tests, essays, group meetings, and everything that is routine...... Japanese students do what any other students some parts of the world would do...they go on vacation! So as I mentioned in one of my previous blogs, I joined a volleyball club here at Ritsumeikan that meets once a week just to play volleyball and hang out. When I heard that there was going to be a group snowboard trip of course I did not hesitate to join! Being a true southerner from Atlanta I have never snowboarded, skied or for that matter seen huge amounts of snow in my lifetime thus far so I was a little excited and scared at the same time. The cost of the trip was 17,000 Yen ( $185 USD--that exchange rate just keeps falling :( ... read more

Powder in Nozawa-Onsen We just got back from skiing in a small town Nozawa-Onsen in Japan, an hour and half by bullet train from Tokyo. It is famous for its Onsens (Natural spring Hot Baths) which were great for weary muscles and a hard days snowboarding. The Piste was huge with plenty of lifts to choose from and there was no one there during the week as the Japanese don’t seem to take holiday’s skiing in the ski feilds. The snow was the best that we’ve ever seen. It has possibly spoiled us for skiing in Australia and New Zealand. It snowed early in the week, but really started to come down on the day before we were leaving. We woke up on the Sunday morning and found it had been snowing all night, even thou ... read more

Where was I? I feel I have neglected my blog for too long. This is mostly due to laziness but partially due to the fact that I am now doing a TEFL on-line course as well as my Japanese Studies. The TEFL course is a 40 hour on-line course run by travel company and training provider, i-to-i. I reasoned that I could do with some evidence in paper form of having trained for the job of English Language Teacher. And I really do need to have a better grasp of grammar. The Japanese Study is a bit more painful. I'm enjoying going to my classes on Thursday evenings (bless the volunteers at the Fushimi Life Plaza) but the JET Language Course is kind of useless. I'm no expert in how to produce a decent language course ... read more

There are lots of things that make Japan great. For instance, the rice maker sings twinkle twinkle little star to you to let you know your rice is cooked, the pedestrian lights play a nice song for you whilst you cross the road, you can smoke everywhere including Macdonalds, and everyone wears faces masks without anyone looking twice. AND, to top it all off, there are snow monkeys. The snow monkeys hang out in the onsens (natural hot springs) and soothe away their stress. The monkeys are all around you, they are around your ankles, walking past you and just chowing on some food whilst you kneel down next to them. I have taken some pics of the snow monkeys. They look like little people wearing monkey suits. They are now my favourite type of monkey. ... read more

After Kyoto, we headed for Nagano in search of the amazing Snow Monkeys that our friends (Brigette and Steve) had told us about. The journey to Nagano was stunning running through the mountains. Nagano was a fairly standard working town with a small splattering of hotels to accommodate people on business trips. We stayed in "The Annex Hotel" was was a basic 2 star setup. The only mention of Snow Monkeys was on the rather low tech advert by the train station ticket booth (see photo). We sorted out a two day train ticket to Yudanaka which strangely worked out cheaper than buying two separate tickets or even a return on the same day. Next day we got up ultra early and caught the local train to Yudanaka which wound its way slowly higher and higher ... read more

Nagano, like the few Japanese cities that I have so far experienece has lots of wide avenues lined by tall buildings that are lit up very colourfully at night. The main attraction for me was the ease with which one could get to Jigokudani Yaen-koen. Apparently it is the only place in the world you can witness monkeys (Japanese macaques) bathe in hot springs. On the way to Jigokudani Yaen-koen there are lots of orchards that are rich with fruit at this time of the year: apples, grapes and satsumas. The apples and grapes are huge! All the fruit in Japan is expensive. The large apples are tasty, the large dark grapes taste like Fanta grape (or maybe that should be the other way round) and the satsumas are really sweet. The last bit of the ... read more

Tucked in the Japan Alps is the picturesque area of Kamikochi which is inaccessible in the winter. The bus trip from Takayama to Kamikochi necessitated a change at Hirayu Onsen. The views from the bus from Hirayu Onsen to Kamikochi are really beautiful. At this time of the year the leaves are just about to turn autumnal gold but still mainly green so it was not the picture postcard view I was hoping for - but pretty nevertheless. If you are really lucky (and I was) you might just come across the famous snow monkeys in the wild. More of these primates tomorrow. I just spent a day here and then took the bus to Matsumoto. Along the descent there were several large dams could be seen. No time was spent at Matsumoto - which was ... read more
