We treated ourselves to a late start on my last day in Japan and were pleasantly surprised to find that breakfast wasn't the usual bun fight it had been on our first visit to this hotel. All the tourists must have been up and out for an early trawl of the sights. As we'd been out of internet access in Hokkaido, we took the opportunity to check our emails after breakfast and the British weather came across as the main theme in our messages from home. Being as we'd just come from the snow barracks of northern Japan and were now enjoying a gorgeous sunny morning in Tokyo, we we're a little unsure of exactly what day it was or indeed, what our names were. How can one country cope so well with a bucket load ... read more

As mentioned previously, breakfast was illegally early and to make matters worse, the culprit was late. I shared the joke with my new Japanese best friend across our mugs of hot milk, proving once again that some jokes really are universal. Today's chopstick challenge was a fried egg, which despite first thoughts, oddly turned out to be easy once you twigged where to start. Mr Fiennes even went so far as to put his yolk on his toast but I considered this way too risky that early in the morning. The weather had improved immensely, although a light midnight flurry of snow had dusted the scene. Weirdly, the snow looked like tiny white sugar balls ready to sprinkle on your donut. I didn't have time to try this out though as with clear skies, we ventured ... read more

I was rudely awakened by an early alarm clock at 6.30am - far too early an alarm for a holiday don't you think? However, I could also hear what I hoped were fresh coffee beans being ground so with my hopes high, we went for breakfast. Not only did we get fresh coffee but also 6 kinds of homemade jam, some from native wild fruit. Of course, Mr Matsuo and I, then got into an in depth chat about 'stuff what I have grown and made into jam' which I guess delayed breakfast a little but certainly not to it's detriment. It appears I need to move on from jam and into liqueurs. We also got into an international conversation which I shall entitle 'I remember when this was all fields' which we could understand even ... read more

Following some recent comments on my poor spelling, I would like to offer my sincere apologies if this has effected your reading pleasure. I will endeavor to try harder and blame all my errors on the telepathic influence of my mother. We awoke to a white world of snow in Chitose with enormous 6 foot high piles of ploughed up snow lining the streets. We figured we needed to make as early a start as possible on the drive to our lodgings in Nemuro (up the coast from Kushiro), so after a hearty breakfast, we caught the train back to the airport to arrange some replacement car hire.  Unlike the UK, things here do not seize up and stop when it snows (except the odd flight, of course) so all the trains were still running perfectly on time. Clothing-wise, ... read more

We made a fairly early start as we had seats on the 9.30am bullet train back to Tokyo so we grabbed a few edible supplies at the station (pringles, macadamia nuts with crunchy cheese, and some green beans that tasted like mushy peas) and hopped aboard). The journey was uneventful which is how I like them and Mark managed to grab some better pictures of Mt Fuji. The lack of events ended once we arrived at the airport however. The departure board displayed our flight to Kushiro in Hokkaido as 'check-in unavailable at this time' and several other flights on the board either delayed or subject to weather conditions. Tokyo was sunny but our flight was eventually cancelled due to the huge piles of snow at Kushiro airport.  We took the decision to transfer our flight ... read more

Awoke to a beautifully sunny yet cold day and had a very enjoyable breakfast of green bread that tasted of melons - much better than it sounds I promise!  We had a busy schedule planned of sightseeing and shopping so we disappeared straight down the beeping subway cavern. We were heading for Nishiri food market but first we had to traverse the underground mall on route to the subway. Full of Kyoto's young and beautiful, there was more trying on, spending and general rumaging than on Oxford St on Dec 26th. All of this is accompanied by calls of 'welcome' from each sales assistant so that the noise produced is akin to a turkey farm. I resisted the urge to go join them although the force was strong that day. We made it eventually to the covered food ... read more

This country simply adores dogs and in particular, dachshunds. We've seen more in the last week than in a whole year at home. Only minatures ones though I'm afraid mother - they wouldn't fit in their handbags! Nipped into the Dog Bakery before we left yesterday and Mark managed somehow to prevent me from buying up most of the shop. Left with just some hand-baked donut biscuits for the woofer at home but only if he's behaved himself. The drive back to Tokyo was happily uneventful with Miss Japan GPS back on form - much fewer incidences of 'error zero ichi' being shouted at us which made for a much calmer journey. However, Just as we came to the outskirts of Tokyo, Mark turned to me with a puzzled look on his face. This not being a ... read more

I've got internet back for 1 night before I fly home so I'm uploading some backdated blogs backdated to stop your complaining! They carry on from where we left off... After another enjoyable breakfast with Verdi, followed by my blog writing session, the husband returned triumphant. The Copper Pheasant had been sighted! Alas no photos but you can't have everything. Thank you for all the good luck wishes, it obviously made a difference!  Turns out the deer footprints he saw the previous day were actually wild pigs. He watched a family of 8 crossing a river and the adults weren't of the cute variety - good job he saw them from the top of the valley!  Mark has also found an ingeneous new use for the canned hot coffee - stick it in your snow boots ... read more

Dear all Have been out of wifi since leaving Karuizawa despite our Kyoto hotel advertising free internet access! Currently sitting at Tokyo domestic airport having a nightmare as our 2.45pm flight to Hokkaido was cancelled due to snow. We transferred onto a flight to Sapporo but this was turned back halfway! We are giving it another go at 7.30pm so fingers crossed yet again please! Will most likely be out of contact now until the 8th but I am still writing so you can all bore yourselves silly on my return. However, if i get a chance to upload, I will. TTFN, Lisa x... read more

Just wasted an hour trying to do a nice route map of our trip for you but the WiFi connection here is terrible so you'll just have guess I'm afraid! Anyways, I'm happily sitting in front of a gas heater in our little hotel's lounge gazing out at the snow and trying not to look at the creepy metal bird avec spinning propeller (?!) which keeps staring at me despite having no discernable eyes. For those of you listening to this by way of my father or the infamous Mr Lewis, please do try and stay awake this time - I'm not mentioning any names but watch my eyes Vera! I'm going to blame it on the abilities of those reading it aloud - you can't be putting enough humerous intonation in your voice obviously. I ... read more
