Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » Otaru December 27th 2013

I'm finally at the last few days of my trip. Otaru is the last town I am stopping at. I took an early train (0830) from Hakodate back to Sapporo because there are only a few shuttle bus from Otaruchikko station to the hotel I am staying. I guess I should correct myself - I didn't stay at hotels whilst I was in Sounkyo and Abashiri, they are more like resorts. You can actually stay in the hotel and not go anywhere. And it'd be the same in Otaru. I have been to this resort in Otaru. Seven years ago. Just like I have stayed at the hotel in Sapporo before. I am staying for two nights in Otaru. I am debating if I want to head down to the whiskey making town close by tomorrow ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » Hakodate December 26th 2013

Today is a bit of a late start. I didn't get up until 0850. I left my room at 0950. Plan for today was to spend the day at Goryokaku. I went to the tourist information to get a day pass for the tram. Goryokaku is also full of historical importance. Hakodate is the first city that opened up to foreign imports. There was also civil war that was round here and Goryokaku is one of the places where the signing of treaty took place. The site is massive and I had a great time wandering round. It was picturesque and since the weather had been so nice, I spent a nearly 3 hours outside. Then I went and have Japanese curry. Yum yum. Then I ate sh*tloads of ice-cream. AND my One Direction Babies comes ... read more

MERRY CHRISTMAS from Hakodate!!! Today I wandered round the fish morning markets (like the locals) and enjoy the smell of fresh seafood, which I missed massively since I don't get that in England much. The hotel didn't include breakfast so I had brunch at the local market - Raw Tuna rice and it tasted so good. So fresh! Then I went back to wander round the old Brick Warehouse and had another look at the shops. I even ventured into 2 museums - Kahei Takadaya and Ryoma Sakamoto. Both of them were from Hakodate and have left interesting Japanese history. Ryoma Sakamoto was featured in one of the massively annual Japanese historical drama. Then I ate again. I think this trip more like eating my way through Hokkaido more than ever. After that I went up ... read more

rst and foremost, happy 22nd birthday to Lou Bear Louis Tomlinson. You'll always be Peter Pan. Back onto the train again today from Sapporo to Hakodate. The western part of the island. And Christmas fantasy at Hakodate. The journey from Sapporo on train about just over 3 hours. The fast trains, that is. I left Sapporo at 12:22 and got to Hakodate at 15:55. The hotel is literally 3 minutes walk from the station. It's a cute little place. I picked a random seafood restaurant round the corner from the hotel and the food was so beautiful. It was slightly on the pricy side but so so worth it. Admittedly it wasn't too expensive. It's just over 20 pounds. But for a Japanese meal, it is a bit on the dear side. Then I walked over ... read more

Today I finally gone and done the deed. Have my haircut. The sound of hair being cut off (dried) is massively daunting. And the "shooop shooop" sound is also very daunting. Seeing your own hair going to waist length to less than shoulder length is also very strange. From waist length it went to just over shoulder length. Just enough length for them to sculpt out the right haircut. An hour later, I am about 2 stones lighter. Not kidding. Even the hair dresser was saying "takusan no ke". Which means - lots of hair. I now have a fringe and a half a bob. It's quite nice. I am no longer cool - I am now (apparently) cute. I had ramen for lunch at Ramen Kingdom. It was so so good. Then I went shopping. ... read more

So today after breakfast I left Sounkyo and head back to Sapporo via Asahigawa. And my iPhone wire has decided to go for a Walkie. I need to go back to get another one. The journey from Sounkyo back go Asahigawa is about 2 hours on bus, then another 1.5 hours on train from Asahigawa back to Sapporo. There was a bit of a wait between Asahigawa and Sapporo. I left Sounkyo at 1000 and got to Sapporo at 1630. I had dinner at Sapporo Bier Garten. It's also a beer museum but it was late already when I get there so I didn't go in. I went when I was younger (7 years ago) and I loved it. If I have time on my way back I might go again. The food was good, and ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » Asahikawa December 21st 2013

I went up the mountains today on the gondola and it was absolutely breathtaking. It snowed overnight, the snow was perfect for skiing as well as cross country. I only went up to Mount Taihetsu, it's just over 2000 feet. I spent a whole morning playing in the snow. It was amazing and so so beautiful. I tried to get up to Ryusei (not nagareboshi as I thought) and Ginga but I couldn't find the road up the mountain. I am a little bit depressed about that part because I was so looking forward to that. I went back to the hotel and made the most of things that I meant to do when I haven't had the time. And due to some unforeseen circumstances, I didn't go to the hotsprings today. So I got a ... read more

Last night I had a massively bad migraine from being in a very smokey room. They don't have designated non-smoking and smoking area in restaurant which is annoying. So I went to bed quite early and ended up sleeping through breakfast, which wasn't too bad - I just shifted everything an hour later. So I missed out on an hour shopping. Oh well, c'est la vie. I went back to Santouka for lunch before I leave for Sounkyo, and I went to do a little bit of shopping. I met a nice lady at Dior in Seibu Asahigawa, who reminds me of a friend who works in Dior in Hong Kong. That was cute. The hotel shuttle bus from the Sounkyo hotel picked me up from the hotel I was staying at 1400. They were bang ... read more

So today I did what I planned to do. Only the sake brewery is more like an old school brewery museum that shown old bits of a brewery rather than showing you how to brew sake. And the beer museum is for lunch rather than a beer museum like Sapporo. I walked for miles too, because the beer museum isn't open when I got there so I went to brewery and then walked all the way back for lunch. And between sake brewery and beer museum I went and looked at a very old shopping street on Asahigawa. After lunch I wandered back towards the hotel, stopped by a shop that is similar to Boots and bought half of the shop (Japanese beauty stuff is amazing). I went back to the hotel and rested for a ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hokkaido » Abashiri December 20th 2013

Today I made my way back to civilisation. Don't get me wrong, I like Abashiri. It's a nice quiet little place, I don't think it's classified as a town but then there are many smaller towns in England so maybe it is. After checking out of the hotel (Hokuten no Oka if anybody is interested, about 10 minutes drive from the station - the hotel can pick you up from the station if you let them know), and bid a very long farewell with the only English speaking staff there (Miura Yuuko-San, one of the loveliest person I have met this trip), the hotel shuttle bus dropped me back at the station. My train was at 1329, so I have some time to kill. I stuffed my suitcase in one of those infamous coin lockers, which ... read more
