The alarm rings at 8:00AM for us and we quickly packed to head out to the Osaka Castle. Before going to the castle, we stopped by and ate at Japan's most famous burger chain called most Burger. See photos on how different the portion is vs. the USA. The Osaka Castle sits on top of the main city of Osaka, and has 3 moats. I don't know why it has 3 separate moats, but just imagine storming the castle and climbing the walls, only to find out there are two more moats to cross over. The castle itself has some great restoration work done on it. The place was packed with tourists and the castle itself originated from the 16th century. After getting a few photos of the castle, we sat down and then this happened... ... read more

Saturday, 24th October 2015 I started my day early following a hearty buffet breakfast at the hotel. With a good selection of quality items coupled with tip-top Japanese service standards, this was worth my 1,200 yen. I planned to do some outlet shopping today at the Marinoa City but since it was quite early, I visited the Ohori Park first instead. Exiting from the subway station, I entered the park grounds through the Northern Gate which was already teeming with morning joggers. The centre piece of the park is a huge lake connected by a long bridge to both sides of the expansive park space. When it was time to start my shopping day, I continued my journey towards the end of the subway line to Meinohama Station where I caught another bus to the Marinoa ... read more

Friday, 23rd October 2015 Following my 3 nights excursion in Kagoshima with a brief stopover at Kumamoto, I was back at Hakata this afternoon. It was the same JR Station that greeted me when I arrived at 2pm - choke full of people, suffocating at times and yet full of energy and convenience as I made my way to my hotel. Hakata Green Hotel was where I was going to stay following the not-so-inspiring stay at Hotel Nikko a couple of days ago. This was a good hotel with newly refurbished rooms and a very welcoming lobby and staffs. I was given a room on the highest possible floor which commanded a nice view of the city through the somewhat smallish windows. I was going out again, making full use of my Kyushu Railway Pass for ... read more

Monday, 19th October 2015 The JR Kyushu 5-Day Rail Pass is a worthwhile investment as I travelled extensively on the island during my week-long stay in Japan. The Pass cost me 18,000 Yen (SGD 201) for 5 consecutive days of usage starting from first validation. At first glance, 18,000 Yen seemed like a lot of money. But considering the ground that I managed to cover using the 5 Day Pass, this was one of the best bargains that I had for this trip as I probably clocked more than 30,000 Yen worth of train fares. Some of the sample one-way fares on selected routes that I travelled using this pass :- 1) Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo (10,450 Yen - Shinkansen) - Kagoshima is the gateway to the Sakura-Jima Volcano with a relaxed sea-front vibe and charming city ... read more

Monday, 19th October 2015 Day two of my Japan trip. I decided to get out Fukuoka and visit the Kitakyushu district this morning. This was made convenient with my handy Kyushu Rail Pass. My express train ride from Hakata to Kokura was rather smooth as it passed through most of the minor stations along the way. Alighting at Kokura station some 40 minutes later, I continued my journey to Mojiko Retro Town where the Kyushu Railway Museum was located. This was about 15 minutes of local train ride from Kokura. As soon as I got off from my train, I was greeted by a retro station building. Some upgrading works were on-going and the façade was concealed by the hoardings. There were signs pointing to the Railway Museum. I stood outside for a while and gathered ... read more

Sunday, 18th October 2015 I arrived at Fukuoka International Airport on the morning of 18th October 2015. The subway service to the city was located at the Domestic Terminal where this was reachable by the free shuttle bus services that were easy to locate. Arriving in Japan with a lack of sleep, I had some difficulties getting my bearings properly as I exited from the gigantic JR Hakata Station which was two stops away from the airport. I had booked a room at Hotel Nikko Fukuoka and was quietly hoping to see if there was a chance for an early check-in. Without even bothering to check through the system, the lady at the reception maintained that check-in was after 2pm - no leeway. For a five star establishment, I was rather unimpressed given that they did ... read more

Saturday, 17th October 2015 This is my first time taking a Singapore Airlines flight from Changi Terminal 3. And this would also be the longest duration for me on a SQ flight. My flight time to Fukuoka (Hakata) would take about 6 hours and 30 minutes. Checking in on a late Saturday night for my red-eye flight is not something I thoroughly enjoy given that I'm a relatively light sleeper. However, since the SIN-FUK route operates on this ungodly timing, there was not much of a choice as far as direct flight goes. Hopefully, by the time my flight touch down in Japan at 8.35am the following morning, I would not be too exhausted from the whole journey. I was lucky to be seated along the emergency row with a wide leg room. Breakfast was served ... read more

Friday 2nd October 2015 So I ended the previous blog quite abruptly as we boarded the train in Hiroshima and headed south to Kitakyushu (train station confusingly called Kokura). We decided on this ghost town as it was only a 20 min Shinkansen ride from Fukuoka which is where we would be getting the ferry to South Korea. We found a nice hotel room which was cheaper than staying directly in the centre of Fukuoka and a stones throw from the station. Upon arrival we walked around to get our bearings and made our way over to the castle. The castle itself was closing so we didn't venture inside, but had a good gander from the outside. As far as castles go and my limited experience of rating them, I would say it was a nice ... read more

And so, after some two plus weeks, it was time to bid farewell to wonderful Korea, and say hello to enigmatic Japan, as I took the overnight Camellia passenger ferry from Busan to Fukuoka. Long ferry trips always cause some apprehension in my mind, given my past less-than-pleasant experiences in the likes of Myanmar and Indonesia, but I was of course fairly confident that this would be a much more comfortable trip. And how so! Despite purchasing the cheapest available 2nd class ticket, which pretty much entitled me to just a mattress in a room, the ferry ride was as pleasant as I could have conceivably hoped for, and I arrived in Fukuoka satisfied and hoping it's a sign of good things to come. Fukuoka is considered a relatively large Japanese city, and certainly the largest ... read more

Day 11. The return home. First leg. A lazy start to the day. A buffet breakfast where everyone chose scrambled egg and hash browns. Fish in abeyance for a while, as was sleeping on the floor - we hope. The SurfJet was away promptly on a smooth sea in brilliant sunshine where we had to endure an American baseball game on the screen where there was more posing than action. Along the way we saw about a dozen fins sticking out of the water and swimming around, maybe Dolphins, we could not see. The ferry stands up in the water and whizzes along at a rare speed being propelled by a jet engine and leans over nicely as it spins into harbour - quite impressive. The Japanese have some quite technological kit around. They drive very ... read more
