Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference From "The road not taken" by Robert Frost" In better Indonesian hotels you can find decent beds, but the protective plastic on the cushioned headboards is never removed which of course will keep them protected forever but they are nasty to touch and their colors will always remain dimmed. Well, this entry is all about peeling off the plastic and getting a few scratches along the way. It is going to be a very long post though, so be warned. Into the Gayo Highlands Sylvia, Eric and I left Pulau Weh with some overly ambitious plans of either buying a minibus or renting one with a driver, but Banda Aceh proved quite confusing with ... read more

I have arrived at long last, on Samosir Island, home to the kooky little village of Tuk Tuk, where the houses are shaped like upside-down canoes and the people eat each other. Or used to. Samosir lives in the middle of Lake Toba, the largest freshwater lake in SE Asia but that's only one of its many claims to fame. This place has got that kind of jaw-dropping scenery you'd see in a National Geographic and think, how come I never see anything as pristine and untouched as that? I honsetly thought the bus had dropped me off in New Zealand (not that I've actually been to New Zealand) and not at the ferry terminal in Parapat. The other detail is that this island was the original settlement of the Batak people, a cannibalistic tribe in ... read more

Zo lake toba deel 2... En ... read more

Got up late today. I decided it would be a good idea to hire mountain bikes, not so sure Rob would associate the word good with it :p Bikes were much better than the ones we had in Pai with gears, seat adjusted to correct height and working brakes. We cycled for about an hour going through a Batak village with cool little wooden Batak houses, past forest and saw some good views over the lake. We found it hard work due to the fact we're unfit and there were some hilly bits :p It started to rain, just spitting at first but as we turned to go back it chucked it down! We still really enjoyed flying down the big hill on the way back though even though we were drenched. When we got back ... read more

Spent another day playing games; badminton, hoopla, pool and shooting hoops. Spoke to a guy at our GH from London who had been working as an Editor on the Jakarta Globe newspaper, seemed a very interesting character. Wandered to Tabo Cottages for my hit of Diet Coke and a few rounds (I say this loosely) of table tennis. Spoke to some kids, had a sweaty photo taken and saw 3 gorgeous Andrex pups. In the evening a couple put "The Hangover" on so we part watched that while playing chess and dominoes then Rob put on "310 to Yuma" - we haven't had a TV since coming to Sumatra so we're enjoying watching it a bit :p Got chatting to the other couple, John and Jean, who were from London originally but had studied and were ... read more

Felt much better on waking up today. Went to cheapo cafe (set to become our regular haunt) for breakfast, really overcast this morn, even a few spots of rain :0 so I had a hot cuppa to warm up (we're higher up again here so it's cooler anyway). Wandered around Tuk Tuk which is quite a nice little place. This part is a little tourist village and it consists of a long winding road which runs alongside the lake and is full of souvenir shops, cafes, bookshops.... Sun came out and it started to get really warm so we stopped off at Reggae for a drink as it had really good views over the lake. Walk took us about 2hrs. Back at our GH we wandered down to the lake, had a go on the swings, ... read more

We arrived alive, phew! And the journey took 4hrs less than we expected so we were happy :) We arrived in Parapet just after 7.30am and were so lucky that a couple from Padang (going on holiday to lake Toba) took us under their wings and told us where we should get off and got an opulet for the 4 of us to take us to the ferry, they were very sweet and even refused money for the opulet ride. The boat dropped us off at the jetty right next to our guest house (Bagus Bay). On walking down a group of kids asked if they could practice their English with us. So we answered questions for about 10mins and had the obligatory photo take (there is going to be a lot of photos doing the ... read more
