Fortunately, of the eight of us on our jungle trek, seven were heading to Lake Toba so we decided to hire a private car between us, thus saving us another ‘experience’ involving men accidentally spitting in my face while I attempt to wrap my legs around the back of my head and old lady trying to squeeze in and sit with her bum in my face. I feel once is an experience, twice is just masochistic. Anyway split between seven of us the fare was very reasonable and the journey surprisingly pleasant taking in some fantastic scenery. Lake Toba is the largest lake in Southeast Asia set in the collapsed caledra of an extinct volcano surrounded by mountains (thanks to Lonely Plant for the description) and is really stunning, the views as we weaved our way ... read more

After a long blog-absence I have returned! I am now in Probolinngo,Java Indonesia after having had a fantastic trip in Sumatra. The people of Sumatra and Indonesia in general are so friendly and welcoming! Not to mention there is an attraction or two to see! The adventure began interestingly right off the bat. At the ferry terminal there sat a ragged-looking old mountain bike set-up for touring and VERY loaded! It definitely looked like it had seen a few miles. It's owner was a fantastic character named Julian who has been cycling around the world since 1989!! That is not a typo! Julian was born in Africa and grew up mostly there to parents of mixed heritage and then then ended up in the UK. He holds a UK passport and has an English accent but ... read more

So, the next a.m after arriving in Berestagi Julian and I set off for Lake Toba. It's a clear, volcanic lake (the biggest in s.e asia at 1700 sq. km) surrounded by mountains and looming volcanoes. Sumatra has a string of 14 volcanoes(many of which are active to some degree or another) running down the centre of the island. We tried to get some info. on taking a road that followed the east side of the lake but were unable to find anything useful. All we knew was that the buses took a big detour and didn't follow this road. There are a couple of blogs online from other cyclists who have ridden some parts of Sumatra but nothing on this road. We had to assume that because buses avoided it, it must be a bad ... read more

On New Year's day I set out to the largest lake in Southeast Asia, Lake Toba. It was listed as a 'must-do' in my Southeast Asia guide book, I booked the flight 3 weeks earlier and went there on a whim. Wikipedia intro to Lake Toba: A former supervolcano, Lake Toba is the largest volcanic lake in the world. It is 100 kilometres long and 30 kilometres wide, and 505 metres (1,666 ft) at its deepest point. Located in the middle of the northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra with a surface elevation of about 900 metres (2,953 ft). In addition, it is the site of a supervolcanic eruption that occurred about 74,000 years ago, a massive climate-changing event. The eruption is believed to have had a VEI intensity of 8. This eruption is ... read more

I arrived at Lake Toba on December 22nd. Lake Toba is the largest volcanic lake in the world. It is 100k by 30k and goes down 505 meters at its deepest point. After a 30 minute ferry ride I arrived at Samosir Island, the largest island within an island in the world. Sumatra is the 6th largest island in the world and Indonesia is the largest island country in the world with more than 17,000 islands of which 922 are inhabited. The Batak people who inhabit Samosir Island are a Christian lot fond of singing, dancing and "jungle juice". I stayed at Lakejon with an amazing balcony view across the lake. Also staying there were a lovely, party hard group of Finnish university students. We hit it off right away and got tucked into over 20 ... read more

Time flows fast having fun We get a two month visa in Penang - Malaysia, take a boat to Medan - Indonesia and a local bus to Parapat, lake Toba. On this bus we have life karaoke on volume ten! My knee's are forced in between the seats but the theatre of people getting on and of the bus with all there goods makes the five hour trip worth while. We arrive in the middle of the Saturday market, the air filled with herbs, wood, fire, fish and food. First we have lunch in a local restaurant. When I ask for the menu the answer is: ''menu? Sit down please, we have fried noodle and fresh fruit juice, welcome to Lake Toba''. We feel good, smile, sit down and enjoy the meal. The boats go regularly ... read more

So from Bukit Lawang, it was time to head to Lake Toba. Unfortunately this meant going back through Medan. Which meant being a celebrity again. You see, what I didn't mention last time is that because hardly any tourists stop in Medan, those that are around are a great attraction to locals, and everyone gets taught the phrase "Hello Mister" and isn't afraid to use it. It's quite a nice feeling for a short while, and it does seem like everyone is happy to see you there. I think I gave out more high fives in 10 minutes than I would in a regular week back at home. Then again, 1 high five would probably do that. Anyway, I decided to leave the celebrity lifestyle and carry on to Lake Toba, just about arriving in the ... read more

11th Aug We were a bit anxious about our 15 hour journey today especially as we'd also booked this one with our friend 'Jake', the Indo Del Boy/Con-man. Before we set off we booked out flights to Bangkok setting off on the 27th for the next leg of our adventure in Thailand. Back to the journey.....We were hoping to leave a little later in the day so that we could arrive at Lake Toba in time to get the ferry rather than be stranded in the middle of the night but when the driver turned up at 12 with a car full we had little choice but to begin the journey. The journey began at the usual pace but was relatively comfortable with air-con that actually worked! About an hour after setting off we stopped for ... read more
