The morning of February 28th, we headed over on a speed boat to Gili Trawagan. Gili Trawangan is the largest of Lombok's Gili Islands and is the only one to rise significantly above sea level. The ride over was beautiful and took about two hours. There are no motorized vehicles on the island, which was a nice break from Vietnam! The main means of transportation are bicycles and cidomo (a small horse/donkey drawn carriage). When we arrived, we checked into our beach bungalow…quite romantic! ;) ha. It was too cute and the best part was the outdoor bathroom…toilet, shower and sink. We stayed three nights here and had an amazing time. The island is very small, but has lots of character. There are fantastic restraunts (fresh seafood!), bars and even little movie huts on the beach. ... read more

A bit of a stressful beginning to our trip to the Gilli's as having booked our tickets we arrived at the Perama office (I will name and shame!) to be told we couldn't go via the slow ferry we had booked yesterday! Basically we were told that the Perama boat was now fixed and we could go in the afternoon on their boat for an extra 100,000 rupiah each - I explained politely (to start )that we wanted to go the slow (and cheaper way) so they could either take us, give the money back or if they insisted on us using their boat we would go but for no extra charge - after a few phone calls the guy said we could go our way but would we mind staying in Sengiggi for the night ... read more

OK, so we were going to the Gili Islands where there are no cars or motorbikes and it takes an hour to go round the whole place! For those who'd never heard of them: they are three tiny islands just off the coast of Lombok (another island just south of Bali). The three Gilis are: Gili Trawangan, Meno and Air. Trawangan has a reputation of being the party island, which is not quite true. It certainly has a lot of bars and restaurants and decent nightlife but it's nowhere near the banging Kuta that's got a party going on in every other place you walk by. Trawangan it was then. We started asking around for ferries and it turned out there were two options there: one costing RP 150-200,000 and taking 6-12 hrs (depending on who ... read more

Hello again to everyone - hope you all having a good start to 2009! So after the busy week in Bali, we have been based on the isalnd of Gili Trawangan; Lombok! & it is exactly what needed & what we been searching for! It could not have come at a better time on the trip! After the busy week in Bali, we now feel extremely well rested after being beach bums for the past week already ;-) Wary of the safety of the ferries in South East Asia, & words from back home still ringing loudly in my ears ("becareful/catious on the ferries on that side") we decided to take the fast boat to Lombok, Gili! For nearly three times the price ($50 vs $18 on public ferry) we felt our lives are worth more ... read more

I woke up with a jolt the following morning due to not only having a hangover from the night before but mainly due to a memory of a conversation about a boat. The lasting image in my mind from last night was of Yaari behind me on the dancefloor while the Indo boy, who was otherwise my landlord at the time was coming toward me - each wanting a piece of me. Now to the matter of the boat. I was assured that the offer was genuine and in that vein I got my things together with the faith that there would be somebody to meet me at Horizon bar as planned. And, hell if nobody was there the worst that could happen would be my spending stupid money on a delicious breakfast. Lo and behold ... read more

Dear all, Hard to believe that I have been on this beautiful island for nearly a month! I havent seen a car or a moped in a month...which is a good thing. However small islands do come with their own frustrations...but nothing too bad. I have now finished diving and am drying my kit ready for packing. We are taking the boat back to Bali on Saturday and will fly out of Bali on Sunday. First we fly back to Singapore and then on to Manilla in the Philippines. I am looking forward to seeing the Philippines again..and getting in the water again. I have been out of the water for the last few days as I have had a nasty stomach upset. I went to see the "doctor" tonight. I told him what was wrong ... read more

This has to be one of the best destinations in Indonesia. Gili T as it is otherwise known is fondly referred to as the party island. But unlike Kuta, which can be ad nauseum, Gili T is a beatifully reflective place. It is one of three islands off the island of Lombok, the other two are Gili Air and Gili Memo which in comparison are not as developed in respect of tourism. And while that word is likely to elicit groans and moans it shouldn't in this case prevent you from visiting. The island has to be seen to be believed. There is nothing particularly overwhelming here in respect of infrastructure and crowds. Instead, it successfully provides its own blend of hedonism in the same square mile as you'll find refined restaurants and quiet beaches. To ... read more

Dear all, After spending four days in Bali I set off on what should have been a simple journey to Gili Trawengan near Lombok. The night before I set off I booked my boat ticket. The next morning I woke up really early to pack my gear and get to the harbour. Just as I was packing I got a call from the ferry company to say that the boat was broken and couldnt go! It seems the boat is often broken and what it really means is that no one else is going so they are cancelling the boat!! Anyway I booked with a different boat...what a mistake! It all started well, got picked up by a bus which took me to the port in Bali. It was a long two hour journey with no ... read more

We arrive at the airport, or at least we think we do… we got the airport train from the centre of KL and headed straight for the departure terminal, little did we know we were flying from a completely different airport?! So off we go to get a bus link to the other airport, on approaching the airport we are a little sad as it’s tiny in comparison to the one we just came from, meaning the departure lounge will be tiny too, so no cinema or bars for us!? On getting to the mini airport that is just for Air Asia we find Clare in McDonald’s, pretty much all westerners were congregated here! A few hours in the airport and off to Bali for diving, tanning and lazy beach days, yippee!! The first thing we ... read more
