All good things have to come to an end and the time arrived for us to travel back from the Gili Islands to Bangkok. We left the homestay at 6.45am to get the 7am public boat off the island to Lombok, by 7.45 it still hadn’t left and Sheila was persuaded by a café owner that we should go with his agency right through to Padang Bai on Bali. "His boat would leave at 8am and we could travel completely hassle free". Big mistake! Soon after paying our money to the agent the public boat left and we were left sitting around till 8.30 waiting for ours to leave. When we did finally set sail there were 5 boat loads of tourists all heading for Bangsal on Lombok. Once there we were all herded into a ... read more

In French, that's the way you say “tickle tickle tickle” (or kootchee-koo) and that's kind of what the Gili Islands do to you. “Gili” means island, so here I'm referring to Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, three tiny islands off the coast of Lombok. I'm on Trawangan. Just across the sea Lombok's hills crouch at the water's edge, sere brown and dotted sparsely dark trees at one end, then flowing back in ridges and low peaks bearded in green vegetation. After Kuta's frenzy and madness, this is reeeeeee-laaaaaaaaxed, even though Trawangan is the most party-friendly of the three. You could walk around the perimeter of this island in an hour or two. It's a narrow sand beach with a fringe of grey coral washed up by the waves, the usual turquoise sea, palm and ... read more

We are currently at the Gili Islands on the North West tip of Lombok which is an island just east of Bali. We are super happy to be here as the diving is INSANE! (we'll post pics in our next blog) and the island is very mellow and has a great vibe. There are no cars, only bicycles and horse drawn buggies! The locals are all really nice and it's absolutely gorgeous! We met up with Barbara and John last Sunday at the airport and spent time bouncing around from Uluwatu to Seminyak and then back to Uluwatu looking for good surf, which was found at both places. On their third night here, when we were in Seminyak, they got engaged! We are happy for them and they are very excited. Friday we took a 5 ... read more

Wednesday July 9, 2006 - Today begins as quite an adventure. We had to get up at 6am, to get ready and have breakfast before the minibus came to pick us up. We decided to go to the Gili Islands for (hopefully) beautiful beaches, snorkeling, and diving. There are three Gili islands - Gili Air, Gili Meno, and Gili Trawangan. Trawangan is known as the party island, Meno is quiet, and Air falls in between, by reputation. We decided to go to Trawangan and then change islands if and when we felt like it (we never did). We had to catch the bus to Padangbai, where we would get on the ferry. Of course it was arranged that we would arrive quite early, where the bus company just happened to have a restaurant in case we ... read more

Deciding to take a vacation within our honeymoon, we have now gone on two day-trips to the Gilis, three small islands sitting just off Lombok's northwest coast. Our route took us north from Senggigi along the breathtaking coastal road, which follows the shoreline through a series of scallop-shaped bays of white beaches, turquoise water, and thick palm forests. Our first visit took us to the closest island to the mainland: Gili Air, which somewhat oxymoronically translates to "Water Island." We spent the morning snorkeling (with, in Linz's expert opinion, good quality equipment) off the beach. The water was ankle-deep for the first several yards out, and the seabed was made of vengeful dead coral. But after a few painful minutes, we reached water deep enough to swim in without grating ourselves raw. Giving in to the ... read more

My solo adventure in Indonesia has been fantastic. After saying goodbyes to Robin in Singapore I flew into Bali staying for a few days in Kuta to orient myself and get use to being alone. First impressions of Bali are not great and will be confirmed when I return later. It is looking kind of tired and worn out, over developed and over-run. More about that later. Took the slow boat over the the next island of Lombok. Very different from Bali - more Indonesian - headed to the 3 Gili islands where I stayed for 8 days mostly on Trewangan. Promoted as having great coral and dive sites I was looking forward to some good snorkelling. Alas. While I saw some good patches here and there it was mostly dead. Either spoiled from dynamite fishing ... read more

Matt and I were moan, moan moaning about the stupid bus ride from hell as we drove through the streets of Kuta in Bali, streets lined with bars and life and the beach just metres away, when Tom turned round and said - "Will you guys shut up; we're in BALI!" To bloody right to be fair, we were on our way to the tropical delights of the Indonesian Islands and all we could do was moan about the journey getting there! We had another all nighter because it was the final of the Euro and our transport across to the Gili's came very early in the morning. The pub was absolutely full to bursting, mainly with Germans - I mean it was ridiculous I had to go back to our room to go to the ... read more
