We got to the beach town of Senggigi towards the north-west coast of Lombok and began the usual trawl for accommodation. Of course, everything listed in a guide book is twice the price that is stated despite the place being pretty well deserted so we were lucky to find the one budget place left in town (Atithi guest house) and went to bed for a few hour to catch up on the lack of sleep from the previous night's bus trip. Later on we strolled along the town's only street to the post office which was closed for Easter Sunday- much to our surprise as Lombok's population is mainly Muslim. Never mind: the woman who was living in an adjoining bungalow was happy to open up and sell us some overpriced postcard stamps and we headed ... read more

So after the exciting feats of Berastagi, the time had unfortunately come to leave the adventures of Sumatra behind, along with the beautiful landscape, and travel down to the beaches of the Gilli Islands where Lucy (another of my housemates from university) would be waiting. We estimated the journey would take us about 28 hours, our naively optimistic opinion was telling us that it shouldn’t be too bad... 36 hours later, and once again, we were wrong. Phase one of the journey included another 2 hour ride on our favourite bumpy modes of transport - the public buses, with an exciting twist being that the aisle was so thin, you could barely move between seats sideways, ensuring that if you happened to be carrying a backpack, injuries were going to occur. Next phase of the ... read more

Good Day All!!, Well, to start things off, we have found the perfect little island 2 hours from Bali and 15 minutes from Lombok. These are a set of three islands Gili T, which is the largest is where we hang our hat for a few days. We have been here one night and wish we could stay for months. At a whopping rate of .04 cents a minute a have some time to write about our travels without breaking the bank. Our group we are traveling with is an amazing selection of amuzement. We have seen the craziest of foods and the most abundent range of shops, bars, clubs, and horse driven taxi's. There is a strict law of NO scooters or cars on this island, it takes about 2 hours to walk around the ... read more

Hello! We're enjoying a fairly relaxed day on Gili T, although we did manage to fit in walking around the entire edge of the island! It's lovely here, and the weather hasn't been too hot today like yesterday. I'm a little bit burned but Sarah got the worst of it! We arrived in Senggigi on Lombok on the 8th (I think) and didn't do an awful lot, it took most of the day to get there having left quite late. Then we spent a day relaxing, and then the day after we hired a moped and managed to get ourselves to the Ganggi waterfalls and back without falling off and/or hurting ourselves. It was a bit hairy - I was doing the riding although Sarah had a few goes as well, although not with me on ... read more

(Day 562 on the road)I have done my fair share of diving all over Southeast Asia in the last year or so, but nothing comes even close to how amazing the underwater life is here in the Gili Islands off Lombok's north coast. Apparently, the fishermen are paid by the local dive operators NOT to fish, and it more than shows in the marine life to be found just a few metres from the beach. Visibility is amazing with 20 to 30 metres, and thousands of tropical fish (many in big swarms) and some turtles are all over the place. Arriving back in Indonesia through Bali's airport was a fairly straight-forward process - at least by Indonesian standards. It took me only one hour to get to the front of the queue at the four manned ... read more

Grace and an enamel bowl. A woman walks past in the street below. Her flip flopped feet pat in time to the ebb of the ocean behind her. It is early morning and the sea shimmers behind her like fish scales in the sun. Her traditional Indonesian sarong hugs her slender frame. She is elegant and regal, despite her poverty. The woman balances an enormous enamel bowl lightly on her head. A huge fish, curved like a boomerang spills over the edges, its head and tail flopping in time to her pit patting flip flops. Its black skin shines in the early morning sun. It looks wet, rather than dead. And given that this is Gili, there’s a chance it could be. Perhaps the flopping is from her gait. Or, perhaps, the fish is not yet ... read more

A civilization lost. Yesterday I watched a storm brewing, and rain pouring down over Lombok. Slowly it moved over to Gili Meno and then towards us. Watching it, we packed up our stuff and moved to a little beach hut to carry on playing cards. Then the rain belted down. We walked home. It felt good to be washed wet with fresh water. What a luxury it is. How spoilt we are, us rich westerners with all our creature comforts. So wealthy we’ve forgotten how to walk in the rain. How to call water “sweet” and long for its embrace. A comfortable shoe. I am still. The ease of Gili Trawangan has settled over me. It fits like a soft old sock. Below me Cusz teases his guitar, gently as is his nature. Five young men ... read more

Today is the last day of Ramadan. Tonight the island folk will eat a celebratory dinner with their families and tomorrow they will go to Mosque and pray. And then it will all be over. The month of exercising one’s will power and following an age old tradition. Weaving simple friendships… I stopped to say hello to a man this morning who was weaving little baskets. I asked what they were for. “Rice” he answered. “Is it from the coconut tree” I queried. He nodded. “Coconoot,” he confirmed. I asked if he could teach me to make one. Nodding, he drew a long frond from the pile beside him and handed it to me. “Your son?” He asked. “Yes”. “I have son too. In back.” He looped three circles of the palm frond. I copied him. ... read more
