HALO (Hello), We arrived at Lombok Island by boat from Padangbai. It took five hours. We were transferred to a minibus to Bangsal . Waiting one hour for the boat we were on Gili Trawangan Island late evening. We found a hotel at the center with fan only ( Trawangan Cottages, 125 INR=USD10.0 incl. Breakfast). The first day we tried snorkling areas on Gili Trawangan. Second day we rested on the beach. One day we went to Lombok and visited pottary villages for shopping pottary. We spent some time on Sengigi which is the famous coast on Lombok. There was no improvement since 1997. Two days we made island hoping tours to Gili Air and Gili Memo. We snorkelled at various beautiful coral gardens, turtle walls (turtles can be watched around these cliff like deep mountain ... read more

Ok class, here's today's quiz. If I leave Gili Trawangan at 11:30 am on the 13th, travel by fast boat to Bali, then transfer to a taxi for an hour and half drive to Jimbaran to get back to the Intercontinental hotel, stop there for a 3 hour massage and dinner, travel to airport for a 1:20 am flight on Korean Air on the 14th to Seoul, then onto Narita Japan then stop in Portland for a few hours and then get to Mpls at 5 pm still on the 14th....how many hours will I actually be flying? You can use your calculators on this problem if it would help you. Yes, you can use one of your lifelines as well. So think of me while you're calculating your answer and pray that I get to ... read more

I'm not sure if I mentioned how much hotter it feels on the Gili Islands vs. being in Bali? The pools aren't heated but they feel like a jacuzzi once you step into them. Also, just until recently all of the hotel showers were only salt water. Not sure how one could feel clean after being hot and sticky from being in the sun and the water and then going back to your hotel and trying to wash off with salt water. Obviously the natives have been doing it for years! One of the reasons we stayed at Luce D'Alma was that they had fresh water showers....and boy did the fresh water feel good! This morning, Jerri and I slept in and then had coffee on the deck outside of our rooms right next to the ... read more

As I pulled up the zipper of my wetsuit I began to get a claustrophobic feeling. If just putting on a wetsuit could do that to me how would it be to have a weight belt, tank and a mask on my face feel once I got into the water? Jennifer and I were in the process of learning how to dive in the Trawangan Dive pool when I suddenly realized that this was just not for me. I'm more than content to swim on the surface of the water and see the beautiful fish down below me. Why go through all of this hassle just to get a little closer to those fish? So while Jennifer finished up her diving instruction, Jerri and I walked down to the beach and snorkeled from the beach. The ... read more

I am pleased to say that once again I have been proven wrong. My first impressions of Bali when I visited two years ago were that of a filthy tourist trap and to be honest I was quite reluctant to go back. This time I have been taken back by the variety of the landscape, the turquoise waters, the never-ending Indonesian smiles and the fabulous Indonesian cuisine. Vicki the Blonde Our arrival at Denpassar airport included a classic Vicki "I am not going to be ripped off" moment. I had done some research about getting into town as cheaply as possible which including walking passed the hundreds of shouting and pushing touts outside and turning right to the official taxi stand. So I shuffled Tom, two backpacks and no less than three surfboards in 35 degrees ... read more

Leaving Bali this morning was difficult but made some what easier knowing that we were heading to the Gili Islands. (one of my travel mates, who will remain anonymous, came home at 5:30 in the morning after being out all night!) We were picked up at the hotel by a driver at 6:30 to make the hour and a half drive to the harbour to catch the fast boat (the Gili Cat). Its amazing how different each part of the island looks. This was on the eastern part of Bali and had more palms trees and vegetation. We drove through sleepy little villages before getting to the harbour town (can't remember the name of it for the life of me). So after waiting around (I've heard the army can be like that, hurry up and wait) ... read more

As we write this blog, we are only days away from the end of our tour of SE Asia. We have been traveling for 6 months and a handful of days (about two months more than we originally predicted), but we aren't quite ready to come home yet...though we're getting awfully close (which is both a very scary and very exciting thought). In 48 hours, we leave Indo to fly to Kuala Lampur, from where we'll continue on to London. We're planning on spending 3 days in London with our friend Jamie who we met in Vietnam, then are flying to Spain to spend two weeks with Bristol in Alicante. From there, the plans are still up in the air. We're hoping to do a short mini-tour of Europe (just a few weeks at most) to ... read more

Day 256: Thursday 12th March - Unwinding in quiet Senggigi Last night when we arrived a number of us commented how quiet Senggigi was as we walked along the main drag in search of a bed for the night. The arrival of a new day has brought no change on that front, despite a healthy number of restaurants, tourist agencies and hotels, Senggigi is almost devoid of tourists. It must be operating at no more than 10% of capacity which is great. There doesn’t seem to be any more than a dozen tourists and half that number have come from the Komodo trip. I begin the day by inquiring about climbing Lombok’s highest (and Indonesia’s second highest) peak Gunung Rinjiani. I hold out little hope as a number of people have told me over the past ... read more

Hello again since the last blog we are back on the right track and having a great time. We left bali to go to Lombok and Gili Trawangan island. We spent two days on the mainland before going to the islands, Lombok is not as touristy as bali but I feel it will grow as it is an amazing and beautiful place and they have just opened an international airport on the mainland. The two days where spent chilling out and organizing transport to the island. I came across this really good surf spot where I watched the locals surf like it was the easiest thing in the world to do. One kid I got a picture of was about 10 years old and so small but he was out their surfing some massive waves. I ... read more

Hello there. So since last time I did a blog we spent a few days on Bali, a couple days on Lombok and then almost a week on Gili Trawanagan, which I have decided is my favourite island of all the ones I've been to on this trip. I've done a blog before for Bali so I won't talk to much about it. I had my birthday here which was really good. That day we got our hotel guys to drive us to a pitch to have a kickabout, then got back and had a few beers by the pool of this hotel while watching some basketball on the TV, treated ourselved to some amazing Pizza then went out on a crazy night out...awesome birthday! After a few days in Bali we sorted out our trip ... read more
