So our quick but so worthy stopover in Probolinggo was over and once again we took the train for our ongoing journey. We organized a grab to go the the train station. Have we mentioned in our blogs that travelling in South East Asia is now so easy with grab or gojek? No hassle with annoying taxi drivers, just use the app and have a cheap taxi drive in a decent car - reliable and fair. And what we exerienced, 99% of the drivers are super friendly and informative.Well, it also has its downsides, as the adventures times are a bit over. From Probolinggo it is a wonderful 5 hours train ride through amazing landscapes to Banyuwangi. We took the cheapest class on the train this time, ekonomi. It still is super comfortable. Unfortunately it was ... read more

V meste dost velka premavka, mimo uz mensia. Pridu asi za ... read more

Budicek nieco pred druhou hodinou rannou. Na moje prekvapenie odvoz prichadza na minutu presne, 2.30. V aute 4 baby z jakarty. Cesta z pociatku v pohode, osvetlena. Neskor uz len uzka asfaltka do kopca. ... read more

Do tego pierwszego dnia ... read more

Niet ... read more

If you want to know what hell is like go to Ijen. The path down to the base of the caldera is steep and treachous by torchlight at 2am. We had our gas masks on to keep the devil and his sulphurous fumes away. You could dimly make out the fizzure billowing out acrid steam. As you get closer you can see the ethereal blue flames of the burning vapourised sulphur dancing above the dark rock. When the steam blows your way you crouch down holding your mask and closing your eyes to stop the burning. You wait until the wind changes. Molten sulphur drips from corroded pipes in lakes and stalactites. And people work down here on a daily basis! We were accompanied by Eno (not Brian!) having booked a package with Ijen Expedition Tours ... read more

Boy, does Indonesia know how to do volcanoes. There are 127 in the whole archipelago and they form the backbone of Sumatra and Java. You can get tours from almost anywhere to Bromo and Ijen in East Java and although we took local tours once we got close it is not really necessary. We avoided the all in packages from Yogyakarta and were very glad we did. To get to Cemoro Lawang on the edge of the Bromo caldera from Yogyakarta was very straight forward. We took the early train to Surabaya and then a metred taxi to the bus station. We waited all of ten minutes for a bus to Probolinggo. You then have to wait for a shared minibus to fill up to get up the hill to Cemoro Lawang. Unfortunately, there were not ... read more

So after a 2 hour bus journey and an hour on the ferry, we crossed over back to Java, to a small port town called Banyuwangi on the 3rd of March. After getting off the ferry we were met by Leo, a tour guide who booked us in for a journey up to see the Ijen crater, an active volcano not far from where we were staying. After settling in to our hotel, which looked more like a holiday park from the 70s!, we decided to go up to Ijen that night. So at 1am Leo picked us up and took us to the base of the volcano. At 3am we started our ascent up the steep but well maintained track up to the top, with our friendly young guide Ary. We met lots of other ... read more
