Hello all, I hope everything is going well back in the States. I am a little bit more than a week into my orientation in Bandung, East Java. Bandung is a large city a couple of hours south of Jakarta. It is a bit polluted, but the weather is fantastic because we are up in the mountains. We drove through Jakarta to get to Bandung, and I as struck by the sharp contrast between Jakarta and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Driving through Jakarta, there seemed to be miles upon miles of sky scrapers. The highway had overpasses and underpasses, and a lot of the cars we were driving with were shiny and new. From what I remember of Dar es Salaam, there was a small cluster of tall buildings in the downtown area. While some of ... read more

It takes roughly arround 2-3 hours and crossed Bogor, Puncak Bandung. We can see the tea estate all the way. also the nice Mosque on top of the hill. The architecture so unique!! here i am in bangdung (heavy emphasis on that last sylable) north java. Its just another metropolitan city, only i find the further i get away from bali, the less people know english. Lots of pollution, my pretty little lungs can feel it. Its tough, and kinda scary, but i am managing. I hope sumatra will be different. If not, i just wanna get the hell out of this country, to malaysia, where i will at least find a few other travelers. So far not one white person here. But thats kind of expected, who would want to vacation here? this is becoming less vacation and more marathon. I have to go to the bus station to figure out how to leave. Much respect to anyone who has LIVED in a city with a huge language ... read more

My next stop was Indonesia, a country constantly ravaged by natural disasters; Earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, typhoons and tsunamis. Having experienced an earthquake first-hand in Peru last August, I was keen to avoid nature's other bad boys. As it turned out, it was only volcanic eruptions that I had to deal with, but that's a story for a later blog entry. I landed in Jakarta and went through the usual baggage collection chore. Bag after bag went past, but my rucksack (in glorious and unmissable purple) was nowhere to be seen. The baggage started to thin out, and then a sign was placed on the carousel saying "Last Bag", to indicate no more were coming out. NOOO!!! My worst nightmare realised. This happened to me in Guatemala ten years ago, when bloody United Airlines decided to ... read more

While finding ways to escape from the usual hours of the Bandung town, it would be fine to consider walking along the green ways through Dago Pakar forest until Maribaya. It’s worthy since you find here rejuvenating fresh air and amusing natural splendor. On a Saturday morning in the rainy January, few of us were been to that place. Reaching there at early morning, a cool breeze flew through. It was a natural welcome. Obtaining entry pass we stepped on to stone tiled slippery path which directed towards the forest. We were aiming for the Japanese caves and historical Dutch water tunnel. The caves are living memories of darker days and bloodshed of colonial powers in Indonesia. Currently, state tourism department maintains them as monumental and are open for the tourists. Heading the way, we ... read more

Got into Jakarta in the evening and had arranged to go on a tour to Bandung to see the Gunung Tangkuban Perahu volcano (mountain of the overturned boat). A couple of the other crew were keen to go as well. We got picked up early in the morning and drove the 4 hours to Bandung. The drive was pretty tedious but we all managed to have a bit of a sleep in the van. We finally made it there and then drove up the windy road up the mountain. We got out where there were several people hounding us to buy souvenirs. We walked across where we got amazing views of the volcano. It is still active and you could see small hot pools and steam rising up. The smell of sulphur was quite strong. We ... read more
