Bandung - the Indonesia’s “Paris Van Java” ( well, at least it was until around 30 years ago) is one of the top tourist destination in Java due to its close proximity to Jakarta. Honestly, I am not a fan of Bandung city. My dad was raised there and he told me so many beautiful things about Bandung, but nowadays you really can’t see anything good. Traffic, garbage, crazy drivers..yupe, it’s just like Jakarta - in a smaller scale. And to make things worst, the tourist “top destination” is what they call “ FO - Factory Outlets” - cheap bags, clothes, accessories and the likes-for sale !!!. It’s for the shopping kind, which unfortunately I am not. But still, Bandung has not lost all of its charm. Bandung is surrounded by mountains- at the North there ... read more

This weekend was spent in Bogor and Bandung. In Bogor we visited the "Bogor botanic garden". Saturday night was spent in Bandung which is situated 2 hours away from Jakarta. On sunday morning we visited the "Tangkuban Parahu" volcano, later on in Bandung the factory outlets provided me with some cheap clothes. ... read more

13 October 2009 - 16 October 2009 TRANSPORTATION: Jakarta (Gambir) to Bandung by train--Rp 25,000 business class, 3hrs HOTEL: By Moritz Hotel Double, fan, cold water, western toilet--Rp 90,000 inc. breakfast A pretty decent and friendly hotel south of the train line within walking distance from the train station. The area is a bit rough and the hotel isn't located near to any decent eateries. We left Jakarta's Gambir station at 10am for the three-hour train ride to West Javas capital, Bandung. This was our first experience of the Indonesian train system and by this experience we have to say that it was better than both Thailand and Malaysia (and the UK of course!) The train left bang on time and as a bonus it arrived in Bandung 15 minutes early! The journey from Jakarta is ... read more

We stand on the side of the street, right in front of the Hotel. To the left, I just realize that Bandung City Square (known in local language as Alun-alun Bandung) was so close, unmistakeably spotted by the Towers of Grand Mosque. We looked each other, and had a same thought: The Linggarjati Restaurant, right behind the City Hall, serving the best Ice Avocado, was within walking distance. Sunday morning starts slowly in this side of Bandung, part of it might caused by the cool air in the city 768m above sea level. Jalan Sudirman, one of main road in which our hotel located, was sparsely passed by cars. We pass few people as we walked, and a street painter painting for face of someone. A little bit ironic, since probably his friend was sleeping in ... read more

Just before I start writing this blog I thought I'd tell you what we are doing RIGHT THIS MOMENT!!!... Well I'm (Lee) sat on the bed listening to Three little birds by Bob Marley, obviously writing the blog... Michelle is washing underwear and hanging it out in the sun to dry as we have just found out there are no laundry's here and ... basically we have no pants. Anyway.. our trip from Cisarua to Bandung took three hours and we chartered our first inter city bus which was very entertaining! At one point there was more 'non passengers' than passengers. Let me explain... when the bus passes through small villages people hop on (after passing the driver a cigarette/packet of nuts/small bribe) and continue to walk up and down the aisle stopping at each seat ... read more

Welcome to the Java blog, Matt style. Meg's been doing a great job keeping you all up to date but I decided I should pitch in and help catch us up (or you guys up actually) before we start making our way home. Don't worry, this won't take long. After leaving Kota Kinabalu, Borneo we headed for Bandung, Java via the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta. We stayed one night in a hot Mosquito farm owned by an incredibly nice little man in Jakarta for $4 and caught an early train the next morning for Bandung and the sanctuary you find when you stay with a best friend of 13 years. The first class train ride from Jakarta to Bandung was filled with spectacular sites and all the AC and music videos you could get. Upon arrival ... read more

Small mainland peninsula with a national park with beaches and stunning scenery to rival the beaches of Bali on the south coast of Java. Pangandaran is one of Java's best-kept secrets as far as international tourists are concerned, but has been extremely popular with locals for along, long time. A small fishing town, it possesses one of Java's finest beaches and Pangandaran Nature Reserve teems with wild buffalo, barking deer and monkeys. The people are very friendly, this combined with the idealize surroundings make this a great place to spend a few days relaxing island-style. Pangandaran is halfway between Bandung and Yogya, about 5 hours by bus from Bandung and 8 hours from Jakarta,Indonesia.... read more

The train ride from Jakarta to Bandung was really enjoyable. The train snakes its way through the mountains past little villages, rice terraces and tea plantations. Bandung has a much cooler climate than Jakarta and as a result a lot of people from Jakarta head there for the weekend. The town itself has 3 million people and is the regional capital of West Java. At the train station a local from the ‘Tourist Information Centre’ attached himself to us and walked us to the hotel we had selected from the Lonely Planet guide. The hotel was revolting - small, cramped and musty with tiny beds and even smaller bathrooms. Sometimes it seems that once a hotel gets a mention in lonely planet their standards drop and their prices increase. Luckily the guy from the TIC pointed ... read more

I have left the Gili Islands behind once again and I made my way to Jakarta with a sligth culture shock ;) I stayed with a couchsurfing friend - Anna - in Jakarta Pusat. Got a very homely feeling at her house and she showed me the ropes of public transportation through Jakarta. I also had a great time with lots of the CS'ers (couchsurfers) in Jalan Jaksa. On Monday I tried out my newly acquired skills and took the bus all the way from centre JKT to the south. Quite an adventure in a city like JKT but I made it safely to the Vitruvian Studio - where I will be taking a 4week Pilates course. But first I have 2 weeks in Bandung - about 2h from JKT - for the first part of ... read more

Well, tomorrow I am off to my home for the next nine months. It is going to be a bittersweet moment - I am excited to get settled into Bontang, but sad to leave the friends I have made. It is amazing what trips like this can do for friendships; I feel like I have known many of the other Fulbrighters for more than two weeks. I realize I have been a bit slow on updating my blog. Orientation was informative, but intense. Our days started with a 6am wake-up call, breakfast, and then class from 8am-4pm. We spent half of our days working on Bahasa Indonesia, the language most Indonesians speak, and the other half learning about teaching English as a foreign language. Outside of the classroom, the biggest surprise has been the number of ... read more
