Different day, different shit.

Suffered a strange sense of deja vu over here in Bali, we're getting to celebrate new year all over again!! Well i say celebrate - we celebrated chinese new year in Singapore over here things are slightly different!! First things first, new year here is all about the fight of good over evil and new year is a time when they rid the island of evil. First of all the Balinese spend, what must be weeks making these huge statue/float things and they all depict warriors and random creatures and the fight of good versus evil! Then on sunday night they have a massive parade through the streets, carrying all these floats to the temple to get rid of the evil. The parade was really good, theres lots of locals all in their cutom dress, some ... read more

So let me set the scene for you, imagine all those films, pictures and postcards you've seen of a lush paradise, with a raging river running through lots of palm trees and tropical flowers, and magnificent waterfalls at every bend. Now picture me in a raft in the river amongst this paradise!!! Hehe yes i spent the day white water rafting, down the river to the north of Bali. Michelle decided not to join as she was scared of the class 3/4 rapids and the thought of a 4 and 5 metre drop!! I get picked up early, like 8am eesh and then we pick up all the other rafters - lo and behold one guy gets in the back of the van and he's from Castle Bromwich! He's been living in Oz for 6 months ... read more

Huhhhhh? Whaaaat day is it???? Whaaat month is it???? The fan kachunks over head, the morning is always the same - breakfast on my terrace; customs of bali and maybe some balinese dance (oh, can I just watch YOU, Surya (a man) do this extraordinary transformation with just one movement into a creature of the forest with grace and mystery?) Yesterday we climbed into a van and headed to this sacred spring - a (again, the word mossy comes to mind) temple with pools and stone spouts, each one representing some aspect of ourselves we needed help with (bad things being said about us, jealousy, laziness). You stand in waist-deep water under each spout as cool, fresh, pure spring water pours over your head. Dressed in sarong and tank top - getting completely and modestly wet. ... read more

Okay - arrived at night in airport - at first seemed no one was there and it's a bit of a podunk airport - spotted a pay phone - all in Indonesia....started getting that ol' travel feeling of "okay, now I've got the challenge!"...but luckily there was Surya waiting...turns out there were a few of us on the plane - two older couples from Arcata and off we went up inland to Ubud. I have to be honest here and not just talk about the moist green jungle, the gushing rivers, the REAL monkeys sitting in the trees, the endless supply of motor scooters - but I have to say I saw a 2-story MacDonald's and then a 2-story KFC. Gulp......but, luckily, not up here in Ubud. It's a few windy streets chock full of little ... read more

Our first port of call in Bali was the surf spot of Kuta. A very lively, touristy beach town packed with pro surfers and wannabe's like us! Not wanting to feel left out of the surfer scene we decided to book ourselves into Surf School and by the end of our first lesson we were both standing up riding the waves.. a little wobbly mind you but we were up and living the dream!! Our second lesson taught us how to paddle out into the waves head on... sending us flying off our boards! The waves were a little rough and we were left feeling very battered and bruised by the end of the second morning. The day of our third lesson brought very strong winds and an undercurrent that sent us sideways! Apparently Kuta was ... read more

We've now hit Bali - after nearly missing our flight because yours truly was on the throne!! Oopsy! So we land and take some cash out and have now become millionaires!! The currency here is mental its 17,718 Indonesian Rupiah to the pound - yes try working that bad boy out, its not easy i'm telling you!! And spending an hour on the internet here costs me 75p!! But you guys have got no reason to be envious anymore - why i hear you cry, because its been raining and its not just spitting, its proper tropical rain! So we've spent our days in bed and our nights in the bar!! Its a hard life! Have managed to have a little look round, saw the sight of the Bali bomb and the big memorial stone, with ... read more

Brick: Life is tough in Bali. The places we stay don't have great showers so every morning we have to get up and swim in the warm ocean. There's no TV or internet so each day we have to make do and just lie around in the sun reading books, eating, drinking, yarning to other travelers...and then the next day just repeat it all again...its tough. So we arrive at Bali airport after an announcement on the plane that importation of drugs will result in your death (welcome to our country!) and we both get stung paying some porters $5 to carry our bags the grand total of 15 meters from the bag carousel to the airport entrance! argg! We stayed at a hotel on Kuta Beach - quite a nice place with a pool (see ... read more
