Yes, that's right, "Eat, Pray, Love" update. I was really tired when I arrived here and sort of slogged about town a bit getting my orientation. I was going to look for Dr. Wayan's Traditional Balinese Healing but decided to go to the market and the Tourist information across the office from them. I ducked into the market to avoid the rain. They told me to go near the Post Office for internet access and that's where I was last time. Around the corner and up the hill I found Dr. Wayan's home and clinic. She was talking with a young woman and had another sitting near by waiting. She told me about their lunch program so I sat and waited for them to make everything....FRESH and ORGANIC, each portion labeled with what it does for ... read more

Hello! I left my hotel yesterday to explore. I already wrote about how great they were. When I came back after having dinner to finish organizing for the taxi to the airport, he told me my room was still empty so if I wanted, I could go have a shower. When I thanked him for all his help, he replied with the Indonesian version of "same same"....thank you too! Even the taxi driver was a hustler! I got hustled by a man on the street desperate to sell a bracelet. Silly me, I stopped and looked at it! He wanted Rp. 200,000 for it. I'm sure it cost less than 10 cents to make. I said thank you and walked away. He came after me. "How much? How much you pay?" Since I wasn't shopping and ... read more

Getting online isn’t easy in Indonesia so we are a bit behind sending the blogs; so here is the first of two, which was written a week ago, to be followed by the one written on 8th February… Up early in Ubud Sunday 1st February 2009 At 6 a.m. I heard a soft shuffling of feet outside the bedroom door on the balcony; tea delivery, a huge thermos flask of weak but refreshing green tea (available all day on the house). So here we are, sitting on big wicker balcony chairs, sipping our tea at dawn in Ubud in a small nine bedroom two floor guesthouse overlooking a paddy field of bright green rice. Doves are cooing, cockerels crowing, someone is sweeping the garden and otherwise there isn’t a sound and it is so peaceful. It is ... read more

That was quite a few months ago I happened to witness the rare occassion which is the cremation of Ubud's King in Bali. I just have a chance to write a little about it now and upload a few pictures. I enjoyed so much this gala ceremony although I didnt understand that much the meaning of each step of the ceremonies. The Ubud people have been doing lots of rituals for months for the preparation of this gala event. This ceremony was one of the biggest cremation for decades. Sorry that I can't write much about this from the culture perspective due to my limited knowledge, i'd just like to share some pictures taken on that glorious day. Hope you enjoy it, because I did!... read more

Our second full day in Bali started with breakfast at the hotel and then off to our all-day tour of the Ubud area as well as Ulu Watu. Ubud is the arts & crafts area of Bali about and hour and a half from the beaches of Kuta & Legian. Along the way we stopped off at a few shops where Steven bought a wood carving of Bali dancers. We then visited one of the famed terraced rice fields before heading to central Ubud for lunch. After lunch we visited the central market where Steven bought another wood carving and then headed to Monkey Forest where some aggressive monkeys shook people down for bananas. The whole area is very green and very tropical jungle. After Monkey Forest, we headed to Ulu Watu to see the Kecak ... read more

The past years have been tough. Health issues caused a severe mental blow. Personal problems with my business partner led to a stalemate that could have been fatal to the company that we had built in the previous 20 years. A Solomon’s judgment was needed to prevent the company from going bankrupt and approximately fifty employees from losing their jobs. During the long Ascension weekend of 2007, I decided to sell my 50% share in the company. On July 7, 2007, I was unemployed for the first time in 30 years. So what!? I would take a Sabbatical. It’s trendy and it sounds good to say, in a casual way: “I am on a Sabbatical…” Meditate, do some reading, some gardening, do long-postponed chores, a little cycling, great! Right? The first weeks: sure. A long holiday. ... read more

I arrived in Bali on Monday night after spending about 10 days in Korea, I'll have to write about that soon, but Bali it is for the moment. My mom came to Bali to meet up with me which is very nice. We are staying at the Tegal Sari in Ubud which is really beautiful, our room overlooks the rice fields. It is incredibly humid here, I feel like shaving my head, stripping down and lying in the pool naked - I won't be doing any of those things though. Apparently public nudity is frowned upon in Indo, go figure. Ubud is an amazing little town, a lot of art and an unsettling amount of Western stores, is there no place on earth with out a Ralph Lauren and a Crocs store? Really, crocs? They remain ... read more

My short journey through Bali extended as far out into the world as it did within me; I was moved by the people, by exquisite landscape and by the intangible energy of this region. Wayan Our wonderful driver I Wayan Suriadi, whom we found at the airport in Denpasar, Bali, was not only a knowledgeable guide for the area but one of the kindest people we met by far. We liked him so much that we immediately booked him for our 4-day stay to be our driver and guide as we explored Bali. He was only too thrilled! I promised Wayan that would write about him in my blog and encourage anyone visiting Bali to contact him and use his services: +62 81 2465 4207 and 0361 8471939. Bali is known not only for the waves, but for its spiritual essence as well. Temples are everywhere. The people have more holy days than there are days in the year. Yesterday was a day to honor 'metal' so all the cars and motorbikes were adorned with offerings. Metal???? Susan and I didn't want to come all the way here without experiencing some spiritual growth so we planned a two day trip away from the coast to visit temples and holy places. Our first stop was the second oldest temple in Bali. We walked down 333 steps to the temple which sat on a river. We were they only two there and when we walked in there sat a holy man staring right at us. I gave him my best 'Selamat Pagi' (good morning) along with ... read more
