Well, hello there everyone! As I am so far behind with my travelblog, I've decided to summarise the places we've visited to date. That way I'll still have some secret stories to tell when we get back too! So, here's a super-speedy whizz through Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Bali! THAILAND KOH PHI PHI 27 DEC 05 - 04 JAN 06 This was just a week of chilling out on our paradise island, and these are the main things we did: * Volunteered for HiPhiPhi- Koh Phi Phi consists of two islands (Lei and Don). Koh Phi Phi Lei is a national park and not inhabited- thought it was here that the film The Beach was, erm, filmed. Koh Phi Phi Don, however is inhabited, and was struck by the 2004 Tsunami on both sides- as the ... read more

Our short break in Bali has come to an end and I feel quite sad about it. We both had a great ten days. I'm writing this in the lounge at Denpassar airport enroute to Singapore. We were sensible enough to prebook accommodation this time and shall be staying at Tai Hoe Hotel in Little India for the next 3 nights, I doubt we'll be staying any longer than that in Singapore as it will be quite expensive. From there we are heading to Malacca in Malaysia. Since I last emailed we've had a quiet few days. We thoroughly enjoyed our tasty meal of smoked duck (it was very tender and spicy) at one of the best restaurants in Ubud. Very classy restaurant and the meal cost us only $30. Next day we moved rooms within ... read more

I'm using Hotmail att he moment as there are no cheap international phone linese available to us my little pocket emailer. This afternoon I will try one of the international telephone offices to see whetehr I have more luck - most will probably be like the Post Office - with no stamps! Yestarday was very quiet but we spent thre afternoon going to Tanah Lot Temple towatch the sun go down. Very touristy but it was great to sit and watch the waves hit the little island that the temple was perched on. Last night we again ate at our favourite little haunt and spent the evening talking to a couple from Norway who have a son on AFS exchange in America. And listening to latin and jazz musicthey even had Buena Vista Social Club in ... read more

This is a quick letter from Bali...We love this place and already feel quite at home here. It's very cheap and we will be easily able to live within our budget - we even have a/c and hot water in our room. We're staying in Ubud in a bungalow with an outdoor shower. People here are very friendly and there are thankfully not a lot of hawkers in the town. There were many in in Kuta so we only stayed there for the first night and left the city as soon as possible the next day. I'm quite surprised at how poor the people here are - I guess I thought that becauuse it's such a small island which relies heavily on tourists ( and there are many of those!) it would be less Asian and ... read more

1992………..2MTHS-1st CYCLING TRIP-1300kms ACROSS INDONESIA 26/7/92 Ubud (46.2km 1219.8km) I arrived in Ubud in 2 hrs from Padangbai. The road was noisy, polluted and busy. Not pleasant at all and I thought I would be relieved to get to Ubud, but boy has it changed! I found it hard to find a place as there was so much choice and it was more expensive. The streets are absolutely lined with shops. I spent part of the morning at Puri Lukisan, Ubud’s Art Museum, which was opened in 1956. The gardens remain unchanged but two of the large buildings have fallen into disrepair and are not used at all. The museum is significant in that it shows the movement of the 1930’s when artists broke away from traditional formalistic paintings of mythological scenes and Hindu epic stories ... read more

Ubud is one of the main cultural centres in Bali and was a must. The most famous attraction is Goa Ganja, otherwise known as the Elephant Cave. Before we were allowed in, we had to cover our legs, but there was someone on hand to lend us skirt-like pieces of material. We visited the cave in two groups so that someone would be keeping an eye on all our worldly good in the open-top staff cars. As Tiny and I were waiting for the others a coach-load of schoolgirls from Jakarata turned up and they all wanted to have their photographs taken with us. There we were in the main tourist location in Bali and the longest queue was one of girls waiting to have their pictures taken with us. Next, for some reason that I ... read more
