With much excitement we met our driver Wayan this morning in hopes of getting a jump start to our day of meeting Ketut Liyer (the medicine man from "Eat, Pray, Love") in Ubud as well as doing some additional shopping. Over the week-end Wayan had found out where Ketut lived since it wasn't necessarily common knowledge where Ketut lived. When we arrived at his compound there were already 3 other women there talking to him and getting their palms read. ... read more

Taking a break from the Ecolodge, we met up with Kim and Awe for a quick vacation in Bali. Starting out in the touristy area of Kuta, we enjoyed Mexican food, a movie, and a bit of surfing (Jarod got up on a board a few times at Kuta Beach). We rented an old Kejang truck and Kim drove us all over the island beginning our trip heading west to the incredible Ulu Watu Temple overlooking massive cliffs. We watched a kekak show at sunset where the men make music noises with their voices and the dancers acted out the Ramayana story of Sita and Rama. Sita is kidnapped in the forest and is essentially rescued by the white monkey god Hanuman. Beautiful dancing with great costumes! We went north to Tanah Lot, a beautiful temple ... read more

Since my first attempt at learning some type of meditation failed, I jumped at the chance to take a 10-day Vipassana course in Java. This wasn't the most likely place, as Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. However, the course was not secular, and there seemed to be a variety of religions represented (I was shocked to learn that Indonesians must choose one of five religions that is than printed on their ID card, and atheist is not an option). Anyhow, I had a light dinner after checking-in, and then the actual course began. The first part of the course was accepting terms that I had known about before arriving. I practiced "sila" or morality, which was done by adopting 5 precepts: abstain from killing, stealing, sexual activity, telling lies, and taking intoxicants. ... read more

We awoke this morning to some light drizzle which turned into a massive downpour. This changed Diane’s dive plans, as she was headed to Manta Point in search of more Mantas. Since they canceled the trip, we decided to hire a driver to take us to Ubud. For only $35US, he drove us around all day. (Luckily, the rain stopped after an hour and the sun came out!) Our first stop was a silver store (we bought more jewels…and yes Kara, more beads!). We then headed over to a local wood carving store where they actually carve all the pieces right there in front of you. It was quite amazing the talent they have. SO amazed, that we decided we MUST have wood carvings. I bought a really cool Buddha head wall hanging carved thingy and ... read more

Lots of rain yesterday, lots of humidity today. Sitting inside a cool internet cafe sweating. Those of you freezing your butt off might envy that. I'm grateful for the warmth and still not used to the humidity. Yesterday, we were able to coordinate a trip to the "holy knife" with Wayan and her driver Ketut. What an amazing experience that was for me. I watched him work on Wayan and then it was my turn. The sparkly eyes and chuckle when he found stuck energy was still there. So was the pain when he touched it to part of the body. This time, I knew the pain would pass quickly so I was chuckling along with him. Some spots were painfully tender. In a few moments, it faded and disappeared. His final touch had me feeling ... read more

Yesterday was my session with Ketut Arsana. If I have ever had a better massage, I have no idea when it would have been. WOW! What a delightful man. Compared to the other healers, he was very quiet. His hands knew exactly where to go and how to work! He used technique I have never experienced. When he finished, he told me my ear challenge wasn't from swimming but from the energy not moving. So, he worked with that a lot! Tomorrow morning, I'll go back to the forest to see the priest with the "holy knife". After several attempts to make it happen again, coordination finally fell into place. There are three of us going together, the other two for the first time. One is Rori from Chicago and the other Paulien from Holland. Dr. ... read more

I just met a friend here who has lived in Bali for 20 years. My friend Tara introduced me to her via email while I was still in the states. After many attempts to connect, we were finally able to make contact and visit. What a wonderful visit I had with Mary. She teaches a form of Chi Kung that sounds perfect for me. As she described it, I could feel the energy of it. I've been curious about Yoga and have experimented with many forms of it. Nothing has stuck. It doesn't seem to fit me. While she described what she is doing and how the energy moves in the body, I felt that this would be exactly what I'd like to experience next. If I had longer time in Bali, I'd take a class ... read more
