Jokaiseen pieneenkin kylään mahtuu monta kakkukauppaa riviin. Varmaankin brittiperintöä, kuten koko teekulttuuri. Kahvilasta jatkettiin yksille markkinoille ostamaan reppu, koska ollaan ostettu ihan nuijan paljon mausteita eikä tietty jakseta niitä raahata koko loppureissua, vaan lähetetään ne vanhempien mukana pois. Taas tuli kaikenmaailman "auttajia" tuijottamaan ja kauppojen teon jälkeen yksi kaveri lähti vain seuraamaan meitä ja ohjeistamaan kaikess... read more

Hello everyone, So from Sengiggi we caught the bus to Lembar, the slow ferry to Padangbai and then the bus to Ubud. We booked the trip with Perama which is a local tour company we've been using a lot to get around Bali and Lombok. The slow ferry was a busy experience with lots of noise and people shoving all kinds of snacks and drinks in your face for you to buy, but it wasn't as slow as we thought and we arrived to Bali ahead of schedule. The bus to Ubud was fine but we arrived in the dark. We walked from the Perama office to Monkey Forest Street (the tourist name given to it because of the Monkey Sanctuary at the bottom of the road). We went into an expensive looking place which was ... read more

First off: HAPPY CANADA DAY!!!!! We were up early this morning to drive to Ubud, a town in the rice fields area of Bali. We arrived just before 9am when our cooking class was to start. There was about 12 people in our class. The first thing we did was walk over to the market not far from the restaurant. Our instructor went over all the vegetables and spices they use in Balinese cooking. The market was really busy and it was a really fun experience. Back at the restaurant we started the class. Unfortunately this class wasn't one where we got to do the actual cooking. It was more demonstrated to us and occasionally some of us could go up and help her. We got a cookbook that we could take home. We got to ... read more

Tuesday, 28th June 2011 We were back at Ubud Dream by 11am this morning in time for our late breakfast. This was a nice serving of Nasi Campur, courtesy from the guesthouse owner, Mr Gomeng. It consisted of pieces of chicken, an egg and some vegetables. After breakfast, it was time for me to hit the bed for a much deserved rest. The heavy rains that plagued all morning made it a perfect excuse to confine myself in the comforts of my room. Not that I was complaining. In fact, I was so glad that I had more time to catch up on my sleep in such a peaceful environment. After the rains, it was business as usual for me for a late lunch at Three Monkeys Cafe. As usual, I chose a seat overlooking the ... read more

Sunday, 26th June 2011 I woke up to the sound of roosters as I greeted a brand new year in Ubud. 26th June 2011 - the day when I was born some 32 years ago. What a way to commemorate this day by waking up to a rustic kampong setting. For the first 3 months of my life, I was staying in a village before moving on to an apartment in late 1979. While I had no recollection of my time in the village, it was memorable to be back to the same environs some 32 years later. Breakfast was served at the veranda overlooking the lovely gardens. I had 2 egg sandwiches, a plate of fruits and a nice brew of Balinese coffee. Not exactly filling, but enough to last me for the morning walks. ... read more

Saturday, 25th June 2011 Alas, I finally made my way to the island of Bali, about 2 hours and 20 minutes from Singapore by plane. Our previous attempt in July 2009 was called off amid security concerns following the 2 bombs that went off in the capital city of Jakarta. The AirAsia airbus took off to a turbulent start this morning even though the skies appeared ok. It took quite a bit of effort for the gigantic machine to stabilize in the air. By then, I was scared stiff, totally glued to my window seat, located at row 31 of the aircraft. I was pleasantly surprised to be served a complimentary pack of peanuts on board the budget flight even though free drinks were out of question. Seated next to the window was a real feast ... read more

Hey our beloved ones, about one week ago we took off in London to start our five month trip through Southeast Asia. First Stop: INDONESIA. After a more or less stressfull 17 hours flight with one stopover in Abu Dhabi we've landed in Jakarta around 3 pm. About 35 degrees and we were, dressed in Jeans and hoodies, sweating our tits off. We picked a taxi at the airport to bring us to the residence where we stay. It was one stressfull hour in the car and Arie decided everything that happened on this roadtrip was IMPOSSIBLE. Quote Arie: "They can't get away with that!!" Obviously they can. Forget about traffic rules. There aren't any! After we drove through thousands of little streets we got finally to our place. Nice, clean and EXPENSIVE ( unfortunately we ... read more

I really am not sure where to begin with the last week out here in Bali, Indonesia. I arrived expecting to find an island ruined by tourism. And i’m sure if i’d gone to Kuta or Seminyak that might be what I found, but I have had a spiritual experience (I know, I know!) out here in Bali... Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) would be proud!! After queuing amongst endless Aussie’s for a visa at Denpasar airport and fighting my way past endless taxI and moped drivers all yelling at me I headed out to the main road and flagged down a bemo (public minivan) to take me to Ubud – a town in the centre of BalI and known for its beautiful paddy fields and artistic locals. After two bemo rides and a moped (with ... read more

(The title of this blog is actually the title of a book and film, most of which was based in Ubud (the love part), and after spending a few days in this amazing town we can vouch for that!) After a crazy but fun few days in Kuta, we wanted to get away and see some of the 'real' Bali, so set off in a taxi to Ubud, which was only an hour away. We were going to get a public bus/minibus to save money, but a private taxi worked out at almost the same so we got that insted. We arrived in Ubud around 5pm and got dropped off near the main street to go and find some accomodation for the next few nights. Ubud is tiny and only has 2/3main streets which surround a ... read more
