Phnom Penh was super. Mini Banana, mijn guesthouse hier, is super. 5.3.2012 We got a taxi to Ubud which cost us about 18 pound, not bad for an hour and a half taxi drive but we thought we could have got it cheaper. We were staying in Nick’s homestay which is on a Balinese family compound. We had our own bungalow set in the gardens with loads of ornate bird cages around with all funny birds in. There was lots of little mini shrines and temples around. There’s an open building in the small compound with 2 big beds on, raised up, all very fancy and detailed. There was lots of gold and paintings as well. Apparently it is used for ceremonies – weddings, deaths and tooth filing. There’s chickens and cockrels roaming around. Funny music being played all the time, we think it’s some music practice ... read more

Today started off pretty much as we anticipated. The driver we had arranged to collect us did not arrive. Up to last week everything was all right until I asked him the price and I had not heard from him since. Anyhow we arranged another driver from the pool at the hotel and we went on a 6 hour tour of central Bali, primarily to places that paid commission. I just wonder if an extra Rp100,000 tip to the driver would prevent that happening. In six hours about the only non-commission paying place we saw was some terraced paddy fields and that was at our request. We were just amazed at the urbanisation of South Bali. When we went to Jimbaran on Sunday it was pretty much urban all the way and today we headed east ... read more

Indonesia: The total time to get from my place in Los Angeles to my hotel in Bali took over forty hours. I was so exhausted. Not sleeping well on the plane ride to Singapore and being in the heat all day took its toll. The flight to Bali was on a Boeing 777. I sat beside a photographer from Colombia and an archaeologist who were traveling together throughout Southeast Asia, India, and Russia doing research. Entering Indonesia was interesting. I felt like I was narrating my own episode from “url=http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/national-geographic-channel/full-episodes/locked-up-abroad/Locked up Abroad”. Though I was sleep deprived, I could have sworn I saw the girl in front of me paying off the official to let her ... read more

Hi everyone and happy new year, We arrived in Ubud, Bali on a rainy evening on December 23rd after almost a month on Lombok Island. We moved into a small vacation cottage for a week (I had pre-booked it on the internet). We had a great week exploring Ubud's art scene, temples, great restaurants, the monkey forest, yoga studios, shops, masseurs, and just resting. Christmas morning was spent eating a lovely brunch on our veranda, talking to family back home on the phone, having friends that we met at the IHF Centre (where Gemma and I volunteered in November) visit, going out for a lovely meal and ending the day with a massage. Very different from how we spend Christmas at home. New Year's eve was more exciting. We went to a Michael Franti outdoor benefit ... read more

As I write this blog from the ‘comforts’ of a Bangkok cafe, awaiting our Myanmar visa which should arrive in the next few hours, I’m struck by the delicate tightrope of fortune that we often walk whilst travelling. On the day we left Indonesia, a large earthquake struck the western shores of Sumatra, just off the coast of Banda Aceh, the place where a 2004 earthquake and subsequent tsunami killed a quarter of a million people and the place where we had been a few weeks earlier. Thus far, we have yet to hear of any injuries or deaths and obviously we hope that is how it remains. A vast percentage of the time when travelling, we never know or are never aware of how close to danger we could be. We take necessary precautions to ... read more

We left Jogja three days ago now, taking a mini bus on another long and exhausting journey east towards Mount Bromo. The drive out of Jogja took us past the towering peak of Mount Merapi, Indonesia's most active volcano. Once out of the Jogja, the landscape opened up on either side of us. I'm not sure i have ever seen such a green country. The land is so fertile here and it seems that every where that could be cultivated has been. Rice paddies and fruit plantations stretch far into the distance. We continued east past more volcanoes and rice paddies on what started to become a very uncomfortable bus ride, we were used to those by now though. We arrived in the town of Probolinggo by early evening where we transfered to a different bus ... read more

In our time in Bali, we managed to see quite a bit, which made for a lengthy blog. So, I've decided to separate it into 4 sections: Southern Bali, Central Bali, Northern Bali, and Diving in Bali. At the end of each I'll include my do's and don'ts. This is part 2, enjoy! CENTRAL BALI (sights in and around Ubud) Before I begin listing the many places of interest in Central Bali, let me offer one tip. If you can afford it, hire a driver! This is the best, most comfortable way to visit the many sights that this region has to offer. One full day of sightseeing, approximately 10 hours, will cost about 300,000-400,000 IDR, which is a very reasonable fee. The time spent figuring out how to get from one place to another and ... read more

Sri Bungalows So we arrived in Ubud, which is an inland town set in the mountains, the drive to it was pretty fantastic with some amazing scenery. The town itself is know to be very "arty" there are lot of craft shops and clothes shops selling one off designs it is a beautiful place and not very commercial, but you can still get a convenience shop and there were two big supermarkets so there is nothing we could have wanted and not gotten. The guest house we were staying in was made up of separate building with 4 rooms to each the rooms were very big and they had a really nice private balcony/terrace outside our room where they served tea in the afternoon. There was also a small swimming pool which looked out over the ... read more
