So after a failed attempt and partial electrocution at the beginning of our Asian adventure I've finally found a (semi) trustworthy computer to do some updates on! Our first few days landing in Bali we spent just outside of the hectic tourist centre near Kuta Beach, in a slightly more quiet town called Seminyak. Chelsea and Angus found us within a day and we spent most of our time touring the ally ways, walking along the beach and watching sunset in a rooftop patio restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised by the cheap and delicious foods, and soon realized how important eating is to the indonesian culture. Hill, Chels and I all shared a room for a couple nights with our own bathroom (even a flush toilet!), but we were quickly tired of the tourist oriented town ... read more

I think I talked about going to Bali the most out of any of our destinations pre and during the trip. Much to Matt's annoyance. 9 months into the trip, we arrived at the Denpasar airport. We spent the first day or so sleeping and walking around Tuban before heading up to Ubud, the art/culture/monkey center of the island. Personally, in retrospect, it was alot more tourist centric than culture centric. (as we learned during the rest of out Indonesian experience) Nonetheless, the rice fields were breathtaking, the shopping was abundant and the heat was intense. A good day of rafting and one of tourism in an air-conditioned van helped keep us cool and relaxed.... read more

After the kerfuffle with Jetstar in Singapore, Trung and I were glad to finally touch down in Denpessar, Bali after 30 hours of waiting around. Mind you, waiting in a 4.5 star hotel isn't all that bad, but Bali was calling! Because of the 'greatness' of Jetstar, we didn't arrive at the airport until about 2am, which meant that we weren't pulling up to our hotel in Seminyak (near Kuta beach) until 3am. It was pouring rain and the hotel was down a back alley off a back alley. I didn't know what to think about the place at first, but when we finally woke up late the next morning, it was a pretty idyllic spot and I met the most amazing cat hanging out outside our room, however it was too far from the beach ... read more

We took a Bemo from Sanur and requested the driver take us to Ubud, around half an hour away. A price of 150,000 was agreed (this is extortionate considering we paid 100,000 each for a luxury overnight bus including dinner from Surabaya to Dempasar) but transport prices are sky high in Bali. We had been told there are so many taxi drivers because from one fare they can earn the equivalent of what they would for a days' work in standard employment. We had considered renting motorbikes to get the most out of Bali as this is what most tourists do. With rental prices starting at £2.50 a day (and cheaper, the longer you rent) it is no surprise they are so popular. However, with neither of us having had any motorbike experience we decided it ... read more

I met Wayan my last visit in Bali, yes, the same Wayan Elizabeth Gilbert wrote about in "Eat, Pray, Love". She asked me to do her a favor so I'm using this medium to ask for help. When she was able to purchase her home, someone loaned her money for her water system. It was a significant amount of money but she has lost the contact information for this person and wants to pay them back. If you have ever visited her clinic and seen the amount of paper work drifting around, thinking of her losing a piece of paper is not surprising. She thinks they were from Australia but is not sure. If you have any information on a friend who might have helped Wayan out, please let me know. Secondly, she sold a statue ... read more

Today is my 43rd birthday and I begin it with a large breakfast with my wife before she leaves me to go horse riding somewhere near Keroboken. I take the opportunity to chill out before going back to the furniture store to pick up our Komodo Dragon they have done a great job of restoring him, he is actually looking better than before and the breaks are not obvious. I returned to the hotel around 11am to find Ruth waiting for me we spend the next few hours chilling out before we meet our driver who is taking us down to the South Coast today. Traffic jams abound today as the festival revellers have taken to the streets in large groups all carrying large and colourfully painted bamboo statues. Our first stop of the morning is ... read more

Same Same But Different Welcome to Bali! Well.... after much inner resistance I finally decided to give in and explore a little of Bali since so many Aussies rave about the place... I have lots of mixed feelings but for now this blog is about a little piece of Heaven in Bali, Ubud, recently made famous by the book and subsequent movie: Eat, Love, Pray... I arrived in Bali just before lunchtime and was surprise to see my driver waiting already.. I had a two hour wait for Kylee to show up so was expecting to wait at the airport and the driver meet us when she turned up.. He was really lovely and explained that he would put my bags in the car and then I could either go grab something to eat or just ... read more

Bali truly has something for everyone. This is most evident for us as we seem to like things we see in shops which hasn't really happened since the himalayas. We are in Ubud which is sort of like Westdale village on tropical steroids. It almost seems there are more foreigners living here than natives but balance and harmony still persist. Many many opportunities are here for locals that do not exist in any other part of the country. There are designers and artisans of all sorts whereas most towns are full of knockoff that are the same in every shop. (this still happens but is far less frequent) If Kuta is the hyper-hedonistic bastard child of Bali, Ubud is its refined, well groomed cousin from back east. Art is the major draw for most but for ... read more

We left the Gilis after a couple of days, since we only had a week together and wanted to see more of Bali. We got a bus to Ubud, still in South Bali, and made famous by the book/film Eat, Prey, Love (not the reason we went, I’d like to point out!). Ubud is beautiful, laid back, and full of amazing shops. I rarely go to places where I think, "Yes, I’d like to live here", but Ubud is definitely one of those places. I’m adding it to my list (currently consisting of New York and Barcelona). Stayed in the nicest accommodation again, and so cheap – just over 10 quid a night for a big bungalow, with, of course, an outdoor bathroom. We decided to be vaguely active and hired bikes to cycle to Goa ... read more

Kris Before you read - if you are a 'wellness therapist' and/or believe in the healing power of crystals, you might not want to read on. If you do, remember the contents of this blog are the exclusive opinions of the writers.... Ubud has a great location. Nestled in the hills in the island paradise of Bali and surrounded by bright green rice terraces and lush forests filled with tropical flowers, brightly coloured birds and 'serene' (see later) monkeys. The hotels, houses and shops are in the same style as the hundreds of Hindu temples and monuments so it's hard to tell which is which. The shops sell art, sarongs and handmade jewellery and every now and then a local appears in traditional dress to leave an offering of flowers outside their home and business. ... read more
