Dear friends! Sorry for not informing you for so long, but I have been doing great over here! And that is also the reason why I had no time to update you, guys! On my way from Bangkok to Bali I made a 4 day stop at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Me and Anete spent great time exploring the city and visiting such world famous attractions as Petronas Twin Towers, the highest twin towers in the world! I will attach the photos with a separate blog entry later on. Here on Bali we are staying in a hotel with the whole group (almost 60 students), so our beds are made every day, fresh towels and clean floors - I will get lazy! :D We have a swimming pool, but the internet is very bad - really slow ... read more

Today was the day that I was transferring from Ubud back towards the beach. The beach this time would be Seminyak Beach, which is just a few kilometers up from Legian Beach where I originally started my vacation here in Bali. I had reserved the transfer back with one of the drivers at Villa Sarna and decided to leave only at noon, the time of the check-out. This would give me ample time to enjoy breakfast (which was not much because the stomach wasn't too good this morning ... all better now) and more importantly soak in a bit of sun by the pool. When I had my little snafu with the shuttle driver a couple of days ago, it was Sara that had come to the rescue and picked me up at the centre of ... read more

Well the moment we have all been waiting for. We MADE IT!!!. After 25 hours of flying we finally made it. After some major game playing and laughs etc. on the plane, we were awoken by a very large heat wave once off the plane. I really dont know what to say but this place is beautiful, totally what I did not expect. and everything I imagined times 25. We are having a blast and have rented scooters to charge around the island. Also you drive on the left hand side of the street which takes a while to get used to. I domt have much time on the computer so I would like to tell you that we are here safe. Everyone is great, the house we are in is amazing, beautiful, and surrounded by ... read more

So, Lee and I arrived in Bali on Feb 15th at about 8:45 from Darwin, AU. We're both from Alabama (Roll Tide!) and have not met one single person from our state in the good ole USA yet. After saving money, getting engaged, and quitting our jobs we decided that, yes, we were going to follow through on our plan of travelling Australia... despite our parents wondering what kind of children they had raised to want to be so far away. Armed with a 1yr work holiday visa and 6 month rail pass, we were off. We flew into Brisbane on Nov. 18th, 2009 and followed the east coast via train to Sydney, Melbourne, got bored and flew to NZ for Christmas and New Years, back to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, back to Adelaide, up to Alice ... read more

I don't know if many other people know the words and tune to the song Bali Hai from South Pacific, but I've known that song since I was a kid. I was (still am) a big fan of musicals. So I was singing it a lot before our trip and now I have it stuck in my head. The gist of the song is that Bali is a special island and it calls to you. Truer lyrics have never been written. Bali was so fabulous and amazing I have to blog about it before anything else. The scenery, the experiences, the people. Magical. Oh and I had a big birthday mixed in to all that so it was all about me for part of the trip and I loved that too. I'll do more of my ... read more

My two girl besties on the ship and I are about to part in our professional relationship. Brittany is a 3rd Mate and Sarah is a 1st Mate, Merchant Mariners who have kept me in touch with my feminine side while forward deployed. We're the only gals our age in an already miniscule ratio of women to men on this ship. Brittany leaves in a few weeks and I depart at the beginning of March. Sarah is pretty pissed about us leaving her, but she can definitely hold her own without us, so we're not worried... just a bit sad. Our fun times range from a mani/pedi to a much needed beer, dixie cups of wine to a 5 course meal. These gals aren't high maintenance but still like to be girly sometimes, I can ... read more

Thursday Dec. 3rd - (I wrote this almost a week ago, just couldn't get to the web...) Goodbye Bali! You’ve been great to us, but it’s time to continue exploring. Last night we went up to Uluwatu, which is a small community up in the in the hills with a temple built in the 16th century perched right on the edge of a 100 ft. Cliffside overlooking the Indian ocean. Aggressive monkeys patrol the area, stealing tourists glasses and keeping everyone slightly on edge. Beash and I fed a few before going in to see the Kecek performance at sunset. Kecek is performed by an all male group that creates beautiful sounds by chanting, singing at clapping in unison. They tell stories from the Ramayana using decorative costumes and interpretive dance. The Balinese people are rhythmically ... read more

The beautiful wedding of Dave and Sarah started off a bit cloudy in Bali. Something we did not expect for the season in late September but with the Typhoon and earthquakes near by, we figured the weather might try to act up a bit. The hot sun did eventually make it's way out from behind the clouds and shone brightly for the ceremony. We had to take a cab about 15 minutes away from our little area/villa to another absolutely breathtaking villa. Inside the villa stood a gorgeous glass chapel where we sat to enjoy the wedding. Sarah was stunning and Dave so handsome it was beautiful. Since the wedding was to be done in Bali, the ceremony was 1 hour in length. They did a catholic ceremony, said their vows, kissed each other...then took a ... read more

It was 6:30 again when my eyes opened and I was awake completely. Jetlag....*sigh* still here... I suppose it could be worse, it could be 3am instead! I crawled quietly out of bed to clean up (we had about 15 people over at our villa last night for cheese and beer before a great dinner), and figured I could read a bit and have a nice relaxing swim. I noticed 7 banana peels on the small table in the kitchen where our fruit bowl sits. It didn't even cross my mind as being something strange. I just figured one of the boys had gotten a little hungry and ate a few before we headed out to dinner. I went back into the bedroom and at this time Al was awake and I told him about the ... read more
