Seminyak, Bali We eventually arrived on the hot and humid island of Bali after a 12 hour plus 2 hour flight from London via Singapore. Throughout our journey we were reminded by fellow travellers that the execution of the Bali bombers were due at any moment and that because of this all governments were advising travellers not to visit Bali during this time. So with a little trepidation we stepped off the flight at Densapar airport only to be met by a huge poster that alerted newcomers to the fact that they will be executed if they smuggle drugs in or out of the country. Thankfully our next two weeks in Indonesia were devoid of any other scary warnings or happenings, in fact we found Bali to be very safe and hassle free. Our first stop ... read more

Days 62, 63, 64, 65, and 66 - Bali, Indonesia Back to the Islands! So we left behind the westernized Asia, Hong Kong and Singapore, for one more island. We had Bali on the list and primarily relied on friend’s research (thanks to the Douglass’s!) as a guide. We initially planned on splitting our time on a beach and near a central village. Bali is a big island, about seventy miles by thirty miles, so there is plenty to do on and off the beach. However, being more in tune with the water then the land, we decided to spend all our time on the beaches and only have a day trip to the village. We are certainly trying to relax on the trip. I mean with all the economic issues, elections, and who knows what ... read more

Many thanks to all who have sent me emails and apologies for probably not replying to them all ..sorry !!! Not every internet cafe is fast ! And apologies for lack of photos ..I keep forgetting the lead to connect but after this entry it is will be my priority ( apart from collecting laundry, watching the waves and deciding what to eat ) So the real Bali..... Everything revolves around offerings to the gods. the women spend hours making little woven baskets which are filled with flowers and food and offered at the shrines which every home, shop, establishment has. Ceremonies go on all the time especially cremations which are are very important and involve huge celebrations, processions and feasts. Traffic jams are caused by a cremation procession...amazing. Each village has its own temple celebration ... read more

It's official, Jub and Anna are on the loose! We touched down in Indonesia Tuesday morning, 25 hours after lift-off in Seattle. Our flights were thankfully uneventful, owing in no small part to the Lucky Golden Rat that we paid respects to during our layover in Taiwan (see picture). The only downers with the flight occurred when Jub realized that, although he had hyped the fact that we were flying a double-decker 747 with a bar on the second level to everyone we know (as well as a few we don't), our plane was, alas, a mere single-decker 737. The other bit of bad news came when we realized that, because we were crossing the international date line, we lost most of an entire day - October 7, 2008 will thus be known as the two-hour ... read more

Just north of Bali's Tanah Lot seaside temple, watching from hundreds of feet above, is a dragon. The monster has a red and white tail that wraps and curls and strains in the wind, each section of its tail has a mind of its own. The head is gold-encrusted and flowing behind the head are strands of horsehair. It powers higher with each gust of wind, and dives with every lull. The tail follows with each movement of the head, delayed by the long distance from its snout to the tip. There is a loud buzz in the air. Perhaps the dragon's breath. As if it's tempting rivals, about a dozen other dragons dart up into the sky. Most don't make it on the first go. Some get a hundred feet in the air, and plummet ... read more

Yacht Cleone, Bali, Indonesia Sept. 11, 2008 For the past eight days my world has essentially been split in two. There’s the top half, a bright blue dome hanging over me for most of the day. The equatorial sun so bright you can’t look anywhere near it. An occasional cloud. When the sun sets the sky is the color of black ink, dotted with bright stars. There’s the Southern Cross, tilted on its side. The Milky Way looks like a stationary cloud, so high up it’s untouched by the winds. At some point the moon interrupts the black, spilling a white glow over everything. Only the brightest stars can compete. Then the blackness chases the moon away again. Then there’s the bottom half, designated by the horizon. The surface of the sea acts as a mirror, ... read more

Hello, After one week adapting to balinees way of living, we can say we like it very much. Have a simple breakfast, walk on the beach for a while, sit down to enjoy a drink and a meal, rest a bit, watch the result of the euro 2008, another walk on the beach, and then go out for dinner. Having a break in Pelangi Bali hotel before we decide to head to Belgium somewhere next week. We nemen het rustig in hotel Pelangi ... read more

Hello, We left Australia last weekend, just in time to avoid a lot of rain coming in. We met our friend Fran again, and enjoyed the guiding another time. Meanwhile we arrived in Bali, where a guy waited for us at the airport Denpassar, to bring us to the Pelangi Bali hotel. We survived the jetlag easily, as the time difference is two hours, although we had to fly to Singapore first, and then return another 2.30 hours.

Well we left you as we were about to set off for the Gili Islands (actually Gili in Balinese means little island) and we were a bit apprehensive. However we had an early start with a taxi, then bus, then a ship that looked as though it was from the Flying Dutchman and finally donkey cart arriving about 9pm having travelled for 13 hours. The journey into Gili was magical with the boat puttering along and an almost full moon shining on the water with dolphins and fish glittering in the balmy breeze. A much smaller boat came alongside to take us off and we landed on the beach itself. A donkey cart took us along sandy lanes which were shining in the moonlight (no street lights). We stayed at the cheapest place so far- no ... read more
