When I finally arrived in Singapore after the push and shove match at the boarder I checked into the Cozy Corner Backpackers Hostel and stayed 3 nights. For some reason I had my days all messed up and thought Tammy was coming my second night there. I was on my way to the airport when I had a little feeling something wasn't right and when I checked my watch sure enough I was a day early. What a disappointment, I still had 24 hours till she arrived. Now Singapore is a nice city and all but it's really not my thing. Everything is so commercialized and it seems like all there is to do is spend money and it's not cheap. Well I tried to pass the day by sleeping, reading and walking around but ... read more

With the typhoon over and a chance for a second go at HK's clubs I actually headed home early to get a good nights rest. And I felt better for it which is more than I can say for silly old Steven who beat me to the plane, but apparently not by much and certainly he looked worse for wear. Happy and upbeat that he felt worse than I, we boarded the plane last and stevie took a slump in his seat as I headed down to the back to find a double or triple row all to myself. I’ll come down for a beer, Yeah ok stevie, we will see . The 5th and final major ahead of me I was feeling optimistic and why shouldn’t I. Upon landing in Denpassar we checked some of ... read more

A hastily arranged (and free, courtesy of China Airlines) 2.5-day trip to Bali was, as they say, just what the doctor ordered. Kuta beach was "tube city," a surfer's dream, and my 6am swim was bliss. This was my second trip to Bali, and I found myself liking it more this time around, despite the fact that we missed the sunset at Jimbaran Beach because our "herbal oil massage" lasted nearly 3 hours. Nonetheless, the seafood barbecue -lobsters, prawn and barricuda- at Jimbaran made up for it. ... read more

Thirty Six aching hours of boats, ferries, tat-sellers, taxis, Bemos and a 'coach-full' fob-off in Bima by an angry ex-millitary man now in charge of a bus company that fired up our Italian's rage so much that the situation required poilce intervention. Still, we made it back to Kuta; town of cheap beer, good food, dance clubs, beautiful bodies and ... Australians. Tomorrow my tourist visa expires ... 3 days before I'm due to depart. Technically I'll become an illegal immigrant or something like that. I must ring the British Consulate - it's on my ToDo list but life and motivation here are wonderously slow. Mañana. ... 25th July Spent 2hours in the local hospital's A&E department after Nic managed to bite through his bottom lip whilst diving onto Mikey in the shallow end of our ... read more

So basically Kuta is the new Koh Tao; Just with a lot more people (mostly surfers and Australians). There is everything and nothing to do here on Bali. It is a fairly good sized island with lots to see, yet it is incredibly easy just to hang out on the beach, surf and swim, lounge by the pool, eat good food, and then go dancing at night and never be more than 10 minutes away from where we are staying. The people here are all really chill, fun to meet and hang out with and are always up for whatever, I mean we are all here with one aim: just to BE here in Bali. Though we do sometimes get out of Kuta with the occasional trip to Dreamland (a gorgeous beach surrounded by cliffs), and ... read more

The day started two days ago at the Bounty - a backpacker bar/club in Kuta. No, actually, it started at the memorial (Bali Bomb II) just down the street from the Bounty. Having been here several times in the last two months I have seen the Memorial several times. In fact, it is where I met Jack Augusto, the man who would later go on to steal my van and abandon me in Yogya -- see earlier article). When I had seen the memorial before -- and the empty lot where Paddy's used to be -- I had read the names of the dead with a kind of remote sadness and a renewed anger at organized extremist religion. Anyway, this time something happened: I was really moved. There I was, tough world traveler with battle (okay, ... read more

Happy birthdays to Canada and the USA respectivly this week. Just a quick update since I have moved again... I am back in Bali. I was supposed to leave today but due to a recently acquired addiction (I am not yet sure if there is a 12-step program for this one) to surfing, I have extended my stay by two more days. Today I surfed, and I surf, therefore I am. (Does this mean that I was "not" before?) From here I am headed to BKK and then the rest of my journey will be dictated by Star Alliance, who, it seems, is far less easy to deal with (especially with Thai Airways who are not 'Smooth as Silk" at all) after you have purchased your ticket. I will either spend the next two weeks in ... read more
