The Jilling Estate in the Uttaranchal region of the Himalaya Mountains is where Graham and I spent the last few days. It is a beautiful area, contrasted greatly by the chaos and pollution of Delhi. This mountaintop ranch is a haven for backpackers, nature lovers, and those who want to escape into the beautiful scenery. We were the only guests there at the time, and were welcomed in as family. This small village was the most sincere, genuine, loving community I have ever been a part of. They all loved serving and were so genuinely happy, despite living in poverty. We were invited to a Hindu naming ceremony for one of village family's baby. We hiked to a few beautiful peaks. We had tea 5 times a day, had snow ball fights, played with a friend's ... read more

Nice corporate job, a great family, some very endearing friends- life’s good, huh? But then it was still kind of wanting- a deeper need to re-discover what I had distanced myself over a period of time. Time to peel away the layers of ‘un-realism’, experience life -people, nature, living just the way it ought to be ..where the money you made, the car you drove, the “who” you are kind of faded into the background and you stood out vs people, nature and elements that challenged you to be just the way you were in your natural honest way. That’s exactly what excited Rakesh, a colleague & friend at work and me to explore a relatively unexplored journey and experience - a journey to 4200 mts - a journey that would possibly alter some of our ... read more

Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Dehradun September 26th 2004

In May this year I decided to visit Kedarnath and Badrinath. On the way, I had to stay for a day in Dehradun because a friend who had promised to give me ride up to Rudraprayag – the place from where one gets vehicles for Kedarnath -- had some work there. Since I had a full day to roam around I decided to visit Sahastradhara, a popular picnic spot some six kilometers away from the city. Dehradun is capital of the newly-created hill state Uttaranchal. The city is known for its education institutes especially Doon School and Indian Military Academy. It used to be a cool city a few years ago. But since it became capital, its lungs seems to have got choked. The area around Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower) is full of pollution created by ... read more

I was staying at a beautiful cottage in Jeolikot near Nainital when my hostess suggested that I must visit Mukteshwar if wanted to enjoy the true Kumaoni mountain air. So, on my second day in Kumaon, I planned to visit the place, which was made famous by the legendary shikari Jim Corbett who killed a man-eating tigress in 1929, responsible for hundreds of killings there. He truly loved this place. "There was no place more beautiful than this and no climate anymore salubrious", remarked Corbett about this little Himalayan village. The guesthouse in which he stayed is still there. If you visit this beautiful and calm little hamlet, you too will fall in love with it. Yes, this place has that kind of pull which makes you not want to leave. Its snow viewpoint is as ... read more

They call it India’s Lake District. And it’s really not an unfair reference because Nainital district of the Kumaon region in Uttaranchal is dotted with beautiful big and small lakes. Nainital city itself is situated around a beautiful lake called Naini jheel. It’s this pretty setting which makes Nainital a hot tourist spot especially for honeymooners who enjoy the view of the lovely lake and also try their hands at boating (There are plenty of them, of all colours and sizes), get themselves snapped to take sweet memories back home. Once you are done with sight seeing how about some shopping at the Mall Road. That specialty of all the hill stations established by the Britishers during their rule in India. Besides Naini jheel there is another lake near Nainital, Khurpatal. An excursion to this lake ... read more

Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Mussoorie August 15th 2004

As the mercury begins to shoot up in the plains of the north India, Paharon Ki Rani (Queen of the hills) Mussoorie becomes the favorite cooling place for the people who want a break from the scorching heat. This popular hill station was established by an Irishman by the name of Captain Young little over 169 years ago. This growing town has changed over the last decade due to the overload of ‘tourism’ but it still has some of it’s old charm if you are ready to look beyond the Mall Road, the Gun Hill and the Kempty Fall – the three most famous and commercialized places here. The resort, situated at a height of more than 7,000 feet from sea level, has been immortalized by its most famous resident -- Ruskin Bond in his various ... read more

Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Almora August 8th 2004

Almora is not your usual hill station. While Shimla, Mussoorrie and Nainital have a fixed kind of travel menu, Almora has rich mix of culture, history and sightseeing to offer. "These mountains are associated with the best memories of our race: Here, therefore, must be one of centers, not merely of activity, but more of calmness of meditation, and of peace and I hope some one to realize it," said Swami Vivekananda replying to the address given to him by the people of Almora. If the great philosopher was so enchanted by these mountains then what to say about lesser mortals like me. For the uninitiated it was here in Almora at Kasar Devi Swami Vivekananda came to meditate. Though some of its old magic is gone but it still retains its charm for those looking ... read more

Asia » India » Uttarakhand » Auli July 25th 2004

I will begin my journal with my snow experience, which I had last year in December. I loved being near some of the highest peaks in India when I visited Joshimath and Auli. My journey to Auli was one of the most arduous one considering that it takes more than 12 hours on narrow and winding roads with hair pin bends making me close my eyes with my friend – a veteran on these roads since he belongs to Joshimath – at the wheel who drives car even on these roads like he does on Delhi roads. As we neared Joshimath mountains kept getting higher and higher with Alaknanda giving us company throughout the journey on one side. At certain places negotiating road was like taking part in some "Who dares wins" with widening of road ... read more
