Despite all the pictures I have seen of the Taj Mahal, it is still breathtaking to actually be here, though it would have been better without the other 20,000 people. At least we had the expensive tickets which allowed us to go to the front of the queue, or at least a much smaller queue. when we finally made it to the actual mausoleum, there were signs for silence, only to have my ear drums busted by the security guard blowing a whistle to keep the crowd moving. Could have made a fortune charging for selfies, for some reason youngsters all want a photo with "Aunty". You have to start saying no or you would never get to see anything yourself. When we came out, the queue was still about 500 metres long, but as it ... read more

Blog 7, Thumping Day (as I told the kids) Day 27. Wednesday 27th December We paid our room bill after breakfast which was much less than I expected Rs13000 rather than Rs22000, then we paid our restaurant tab which I had estimated at around Rs20000 but they only charged us Rs8600! I did query this saying that it should be much more, but was assured it was right. I think they were genuinely very happy to have us to stay! The blind fools. We had to check out by 10am but were allowed to keep our bags in reception and went for a walk in the Nature Forest again, down the road. The kids enjoyed it again especially the long concrete slide and we could keep an eye on them from the shade of some trees ... read more

Boxing Day Blog Day 26. Tuesday 26th December Today started with a pack of monkeys making their was across the rooftops towards our rooftop restaurant. Kids were fascinated, adults worried. Our waiter produced a catapult and just the sight of it seemed to work and they moved along. We decided to visit Akbars Tomb today, the last major site to visit, but about 10km from the Taj. Then we planned to carry on to a good market for some last minute shopping as we only have a few days left now. But trying to hire a taxi was very hard here as they are not really allowed in this area. But we found an auto-rick who said he had a taxi. But he drove us for miles in his barely held together rick, with rusty holes ... read more

Varanasi was not what I was expecting after seeing the Sue Perkins program on The Ganges, they must have sought out the worst and smelliest places just for effect. Granted, I wouldn't want to go for a swim in the river, and you did have to step over cow dung and cows on occasion, but it was not that bad.The ghat where they do the cremations seemed a lot less dignified here than that in Kathmandu, although it is one of the most prestigious places, just very chaotic. Seems if you can't afford the wood here, they just shove the body into the river, sometimes in bits! On the river side was a hot air ballon, thetherd, that was giving people a quick trip up to about 50 feet and then back down, it was like ... read more

Taj & Park Day 25. Monday 25th December. As the Sun newspaper would say: A MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL OUR READERS We were up bright and early at 6am. Leave Hotel at 6.45 and walk to the South Gate, which is just around the corner. Half way down the road a guy tells us that the South Gate does not open ‘till 8pm, so we head for the West Gate where a large queue had already formed, although the gate was shut. We then had to join another queue for tickets, but this was a very small queue for forigners (Rs1000 each, kids free) our ticket price included free overshoes (for entry to the Taj) and a ½ litre of water each. Then we went to join the queues for entry. We found that there were ... read more

A Wild Day Out in a Deserted City Day 24. Sunday 24th December (Christmas Eve!) Earlyish 8am breakfast, ready for early start; did a bit of crisps & sweet shopping for eventuality of there being no cafes in a deserted city (which there weren’t). Set off about 9.30 in a proper taxi (booked through our auto-rick yesterday) who drove us the 40Km to Fatehpur Sikri. Leaving Agra we drove through the cantonement area (large army base) which was massive. Then onto a toll road which was like a motorway apart from all the tractors and cyclists, and the occassional motorbike going the wrong way on the hard shoulder. All trucks stay in the “fast” lane so we had to overtake them on the inside. But we made good time, reaching a reckless 50mph at times! I ... read more

Having had a 10 hour drive to get here, all we really wanted was a shower and a stretch. Everyone else went off for a orientation tour, I just wanted to stay close to the bathroom. The good thing about Varanasi is that as a holy city it is alcohol free, good for a detox. The bad thing about Varanasi is its alcohol free. An early start next day, to drive out of the city and get boats to sail down the Ganges. When we arrived at a small mud bank, we were told that as a holy river there are no toilets, or any chance to have a " happy" break, so go off behind the bushes. Given that they throw bodies into this river, cows wander its edges, how can a quick pee defile ... read more

2ndDay in Agra Day 23. Saturday 23rd December About 10am we decide to walk to Agra Fort, about 2km apparently. We try to find a path through the parkland between us & the fort, but it is harder than we thought. We had to double back once and head for the West Gate to the Taj (½ Km), then after ½ Km we come to the bus park for tourists visiting the Taj, mostly school outings it seems. Eventually we find a narrow path fenced off from the rest of the park. This is about ½ Km long, then we follow a road with inaccessable parks on each side for about a Km, then another busier road from one roundabout to another and after crossing some very busy roads we were actually following the walls of ... read more

Train & Agra Day 22. Friday 22nd December Got up at 5.45 and met the sleepy Reedies at reception at 6. We had paid all our bills last night so just dropped keys off and left with all our luggage. The manager had told us that it wasn’t worth booking a taxi as the station was nearby, so we took his advice and flagged down an auto-rick which happened to have extra boot space. We crammed our bags in there and had plenty of room for ourselves. At the train station we got a porter to carry main bags, mine over a shoulder, 2 on his head and another pulled behind, he went to the end of platform 1 and crossed the track to platform 2. Although our train wasn’t in yet (it was only 6.15 ... read more
