Hey! So from the pits to the beautiful Ooty - Previously a hill station for the British in the time of the Raj!! We caught the train from Mettapalayam, where we spent the previous night - and experienced the BIGGEST storm.....the roads flooded and I had to wring my whole skirt out before entering the restaurant which we'd rushed into for dinner. The thunder was deafening and the lightning was amazing, turquoise, purple and pink! A complete change of landscape and the MOST beautiful train ride - We even went 1st Class!! It was an old steam train that pushed our carriages up to the highest points in Southern India, nearly 2500ft above sea level......Chilly (but more about that in a bit!) The train took us from the tropical surroundings up to evergreen forests, past waterfalls, ... read more

Well we're in the Hill Country again and it's truely beautiful. The only problem is that it's raining up in the mountains. We travelled through the Mudumalai wildlife Sanctuary, lots of critters big and small. The monkeys were soooo cute and the elephants magnificent. We stayed at a resort in the sanctuary which was once a retreat for the Brits who wanted to get away from the heat of the the lowlands. It was quiet and peaceful, we didn't want to leave. ... read more

Spent our time here mainly eating actually, it’s the first place in ages we found that served western food, the homemade chocolates are to diefor! It was quite amusing when we first arrived as we went to the YHA hostel however we were stood outside the food hall and at the back entrance so all we saw was food being hurled out of the back door and loads of rubbish, it wasn't until later we found the actually reception and found the room to be quite nice, we shared with a Canadian girl called Romy that we met on the steam train on the way up to Ooty. The train ride was good however we had to get up so early so unfortunately we all fell asleep half way through, it was great chugging through the ... read more

From Hampi we made our way to Ooty, stayed a couple of day in Mysore first, very crowded city but that is where the palace of the Taj Mahal is...so we couldn't miss that! We stayed in a little village outside the city with the name of Sri Rangapatnam. We stayed about a week in Ooty where we went horse back riding, motorcycle driving through the mountains (2600m altitude!). We also spent some time in a village we were invited to where I learned how to dance like a real Indian woman! I also learned some Baduga language and Thomas learned to play cricket and also to dance with the boys! It was magical....As you will see on the pictures!... read more

Terkut Ootysta, etela-Intian vuorilta! Paatin jattaa kalliin Goan taakse kun siihen tuli vihdoin ja viimein mahdollisuus. Kiitos siita mr Z:lle! Kavaisin matkan varrella Bangaloressa, joka on huikea liikennemeri. Asukkaita yli 6 miljoonaa. Vedin saavuttuani mestoilla parin tunnin kavelyreissun paikallisella torilla ja ties missa. Kaaos oli sanoin kuvaamaton. En nahnyt yhtaan lankkaria (ulkomaalaista) matkan varella. Yovyin jollain pikkukujalla sijaitsevassa motellissa ja motellin takana raikasi amyreista islamilaiset rukouslaulut. Motellin katolta oli huikeat nakymat ransistuneen asuntoalueen yli. Saavuttuani Bangaloreen otin riksan, koska en halunnut lahtea roudaamaan helvetin painavia kassejani keskustan lapi. Eikohan kuski sitten ollut pahinta mahdollista laatua. Ensin yritti pyytaa hunttia (2 egee) ja tingin hinnan 50 rupiaan. Sit matkalla taa urpo rupee mainostamaan jotain vitun... read more

Hello, Just thought I'd write a quick update for those wondering how we celebrated Lindsey's 31st... We're up in the Nilgiri Hills, in Ooty at the moment, which is 2250 metres above sea level, so we're right up in the mountains. We got here by narrow-gauge steam railway, which was expectedly beautiful and scenic. Earlier this week, we went looking for animals in the Mudmalai National Park. We spent 2 nights there and although we didn't see any tigers, in the course of a night safari, 4 hour jungle trek (starting at 6am) and an early morning elephant ride, we did manage to see wild elephants, boar, deers, bison, plenty of birds, monkeys and lizards and a python, which Paul nearly trod on! We arrived back in Ooty yesterday, a hill station left over from the ... read more

In the late morning hours I am finally on my way up towards the Arani Mansion. It has been 22 years since we left Ooty, India's "queen of hill-stations." In the crisp cold air and bright Ooty sunshine, I walk up the hill pass the old college, the large playing field, and the famous stone house, the first house constructed by the British. As I get closer I take the detour along a windy path that passes through a small village and lots of vegetable crops. Even as to this day children stick their little heads out of their houses to greet the by passers, as they used to, with familiar phrases like, 'good morning,' 'what is your name, 'hello.' In 1980, a group of 80 mainly Iranian Children of Bahai background left Iran in the ... read more

Of all places I visited Ooty was probably the highlight. This is truely an amazing place. While located in south india it has the falvour of europe or parts of north america in both weather and architecture. Various tribes such as the Todas have probably had inhabited this region for some time, but the British made it the retreat of the then 'Madras Presidency,' sometime in the 1800's. Colonial style homes or mansions are still abundant. Ooty's climate is somewhat of a paradox. It is the low latitude city with high latitude climate, like Seattle. This is only possible because it stands 2500 meters or roughly 8000 feet above sea level. When it is clear the cold air is moderated by the sun which can easily burn your skin. As soon as the sun sets the ... read more

Its been my very long dream to visit Ooty since i saw a movie shot in ooty. (Movie: Geetanjali (1989) directed by mani Ratnam) That movie ran for almost 2yrs in 3different languages in South India and became a cult for youngster. So deeply inspired, the foggy scenes of the mountains and the haunting love story with twist with the hero taking a retreat to ooty after a road accident and discovering a fatal cancer. The dejected Hero numbering his last daysmeets a girl and falls in love with that girl and only to know that she too is a cancer patient on the death roll. And the climax...I heared the movie was shot in the 'Keti' area. It was so touching movie to see at the age of 12 when i have never imagined how ... read more
