I had never thought that, travelling could be one of my hobbies, because I am not the kinda person who can travel easily.. I have got all kind of sicknesses.. bus sickness, air sickness etc etc. Anyways, after I started working, Me and my roommate and two friends of ours decided to take a trip to ooty on a weekend. We were in mysore then, a small but beautiful city in south karnataka. We booked for a tour package through our company travel agent. Our journey started at 5 in morning, our cab driver picked us up at 5 in morning and our first destination was bandipur national park, which is around 70 Km. from Mysore. We reached bandipur national park by 6:30 am and took the safari there. It was my first safari, we got ... read more

Ooty is quite unlike any other Indian town that I have visited. I think the reason for this is that it was, from its origin, a European town. Its founder, John Sullivan - I am staying in a hotel named after him, Sullivan's Court - bought up all the land (dirt cheap of course, roughly the same terms as when Peter Minuit purchased Manhattan) and from the beginning European style houses were erected. Many of them look vaguely Swiss, although it may just be that I have Swizerland on my mimd because of the story about the woman the elephants killed. There is relatively little traffic here even through the centre of the town, which is known as Charing Cross. I couldn't see either a railway station or a cross there, though, but there is a ... read more

We left the hotel at about ten o'clock and drove off towards Mysore. However, we did not leave Bangalore until nearly eleven. The traffic and traffic management systems in the city really are awful. I noticed a fried chicken shop called Kentacky Chicken Corner, which I thought was probably a good name. Further on there was a temple with a giant green eagle over its doorway. I saw an attractive building and Rangam told me that it was a hospital. A lot of money seems to be poured into making hospitals here look good. This probably does increase the morale of patients and relatives and the recovery rates. There was a very beautiful hospital in Mumbai too, off Marine Drive. Just before we left the town we took a flyover, both the beginning and end of ... read more

Oh my, where do we start!! It's been 11 days here, we're covered so much ground and seen so much stuff already and it's all been incredible. Even the train from Panaji in Goa to Kerala with the rats under our seat. All good! It wasnt until we left Mumbai that we realised how hectic it was. The cultural shock wasnt as massive as we through it would be but thats because we're both hard-core seasoned travellers......ha Tom dived into the haggling as soon as we arrived by getting the exchange rate up even at the airport FX counter. It took him a couple of days to get over the gut rot that he picked up at the kebab shop in Guildford and since then we've committed ourselves as serious street food addicts. We're both stuffed ... read more

Day 38 So we have started travelling. We've visited Calicut from Cochin. It was a 6 hour train ride to get there, we did an expensive sleeper ticket for 1.55 pound and got to stand in the doorway of the train hanging on for dear life, Russ called it free airconditioning. Eventually got a seat and moved our backpacks out the isle, and out of the rain. Numerous beggers and ppl selling everything from pencils to banana fritters! Not much to see in Calicut, the most exciting thing we did was get a auto rickshaw from the train station to a hotel reccommeded by the lonely planet book. We arrived up their covered driveway to be meeted by a doorman. We just managed to fit all kit and both of us in the rickshaw...well all but ... read more

Dear all, After spending a week with mum I headed to a place called Ooti - a mountaneous area surrounded by tea plantations and interesting wildlife. This came as a shock to the system as I was used to rocket high temperatures and suddenly I was in need of a jacket and scarf. I arrived to be met by Alice at the YWCA hostel which had open fires and a massive old communal sitting area where many like minded travellers sit and drink tea and play the guitar badly. The next day we had a little wonder around the town to get a feel for the place. We visited Ooti's infamous 'Botanical Gardens' which weren't so botanical it almost resembled what a big public park looks like in london. It was lovely nonetheless but as we ... read more

With an additional three weeks up our sleeves we decided that we would check out the Nilgiri hills district and in particular a place called Ooty. We have made an effort on this trip to eat a wide range of local cuisines where available and situated right next door to my old work in Sydney was an award winning restaurant named Nilgiri's, so I thought that it must be a great place to sample some fresh and inspiring food. Travelling anywhere in India takes time and after doing a little bit of reading we decided on our route to the hill station of Ooty knowing that it would take 2 days to get there if we didn't want to rush. We checked out of our Ernakalum guest house at around 6.30am to make a 7:15 train ... read more

14-15 Feb 2009. Traveled to Ooty, described by all our group’s guidebooks as a charming throwback to colonial British times. It’s a “hill station”, a small town used as a summer retreat from India’s terrific heat. Unfortunately, those times are long gone. After an amazing ride up the mountains to about 6600 feet, we discovered yet another dusty town, with the worst accommodations we’ve experienced during any Intrepid trip - dirty and in poor repair. We had a breakfast to remember - it took over 30 minutes to get coffee and bread. The Indian service economy is not service-oriented. Today, we took a narrow gauge train (famous toy train, UNEXSO world heritage site) for an hour to Coonoor, where we visited a tea farm and factory. The train was fun but typically crowded, and the factory ... read more

Ooty, not exactly an easy place to get too. Caught the 5 a.m. train out of Trichy to Coimbatore, then a bus to Mettapulayam for the night. Went to buy our tickets for the steam train, but was sold out. Shit!! Had amazing dinner at this little hole in the wall place; I say this all the time! Excellent tandoor chicken! Anyways were up and at the train station at 0520 hrs to stand in line for last minute tickets. Got lucky, and got seats, even a window seat, however was on wrong side of most of the views. It took 7 hrs to climb the hill to Ooty. A very cool trip, as how often do you ride a steam train from 1857!!. It had to stop frequently to re-stock coal, yes coal, and to ... read more
