Nieco take som v zivote nevidela - bolo to fakt uzasne. Tance mali prepracovane do posledneho pohybu oci, usmevu a gesta ruk. Vela ludi sa tu zivi obrabanim kamena, lebo ... read more

Hello Everyone, Its been a while! Thought i would give you all a little bit of respite from my long, yet throughouly interesting, blogs! But that does mean i've got a lot of catching up to do.....uh oh! I'm going to narrate mostly with photos, because i'm sure that is the only part most of you look at. In fact i know its the only part most of you look at because you have told me (Emily Jones!), apart from my dedicated family of course! Since i last wrote i've been in Mamallpuram volunteering with Earth Aid India, which has been great. It was a massive culture shock to start with, you really do get to see REAL Indian life. I was so shocked to see how some of these people in the remote villages live. ... read more

I’d booked the 8.00am (for a lie-in) train to Chennai not knowing that it would stop at every local station along the way and we didn’t arrive until 4pm in the afternoon, too late to catch the bus to Mamallapuram, so joy of joys we hired a white Ambassador cab, such luxury. All three of us squeezed in the back and we were chauffeured through the beeping traffic of Chennai and onto the coastal toll road to Mamallapuram aka Mahabalipuran or as we pronounced it Mummamallipurammmmum… - a coastal village that promised great seafood and a chance to chill in the surrounds of ancient carvings and temples. We had been trying to call ahead to book accommodation, but the codes had all changed, I assume a result of the tsunami, so we settled ourselves down for ... read more

Mamallapuram turned out to be great. As you can see from the photos, a lot of partying was done and there were a few hangovers to be nursed. However, i did do something constructive in the 3 days here. I've arranged to come back to Mamallapuram to work for an aid agency called Earth Aid Asia. I am going to be working with a local Health Worker, visiting the surrounding villages, and assisting with any health problems they may have. I'll find out more tomorrow, but i'm really excited, if a little apprehensive! All those lectures i went to for the 6 months i was doing my tropical nursing qualification seem to have vanised from my brain, aahhh! So from here Mike and i headed to Chennai (aka Madras) for a few nights. We searched high and ... read more

Hi friends and family. I am nearing the end of a fantastic journey through India. I have been from the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains to the southern tip of India and a lovely fishing village called Kochi. I have been from the Arabian Sea to the Bay of Bengal. I have met alot of people from all over the world, eaten interesting foods I've never eaten and in ways I am not accostumed to. I have seen temple after temple after ancient temple, as well as mosques churches and even the grand daddy, the Taj Mahal. I have learned to know Kripa better through experiencing her country of birth, the country that raised her. I have learned to know myself better through trials with different people and situations and through the mere experience of being ... read more

Arriving in India will always be an interesting experience for me. The country has its own peculiarities which you notice straight away, from the heat and the smell, to the mass of people outside the airport and people-filled rickshaws. And this time was no different! Phil and I got here very early in the morning on Thursday, after our Thai Airways from Dubai to Chennai was delayed for several long hours. Immigration processed us very quickly, thanks to a "Foreigners only" desk, and us apparently being the only non-Indians on the flight. Then the wait for our luggage started. At first the quantity of boxes on the conveyor belt seemed a bit strange. Were they not accidentally unloading a cargo plane?! Soon it became clear though that several people on board had travelled with hundreds of ... read more

In the course of my sightseeing today, I realised that the air is constantly full with the sound of sculptors working on their pieces. The studios of Mamallapuram turn out statues for temples across the globe, and their chip-chip-chipping is background noise throughout the day. Around the workshops there also tends to be a cloud of stone dust, an unwelcome sight for contact lens wearers. I first went to the Shore Temple, a World Heritage site that is probably the most disappointing monument I've seen in India. Though it has a dramatic location within yards of the breaking surf, and must have been a sight to behold in its day (constructed in the early 8th Century), the intervening years have seen its carvings so ravaged by the elements that it's virtually impossible to make out any ... read more

A 4:30AM rise to welcome me back to the Indian Rail network. Loy kindly got up in order to accompany me to my taxi, a favour I returned by accidentally locking him out of his apartment. It seemed as though the driver had slept in his cab overnight outside the building. There was another seat mix-up on the train, which I can only put down to bad luck - not sure how I got through 2.5 months with no trouble, but now I don't seem to be able to ever sit in the right place. My ticket said it was carriage C2. Normally there is a little sign on the carriage bearing the carriage number, and there's also a reservations list on the door so that you can confirm it's the right one - both were ... read more

Pondicherry and Mamallapuram. Setting up for spending the weekend in Chennai. Since I am word-deficient, here is what Jan had to say: I'm woefully behind at this, but it's been a jam packed trip. We were still in Madurai when I sent my last. Forgot to mention we were all blessed by the temple elephant there. For Rs. 10, she rests the end of her trunk on the top of your head, sometimes patting and sometimes slightly rocking. We had many encounters and conversations with pilgrims and tourists alike. Will add specific comments to photos when I get that together. John -- I mean Hambone (he says only his mother and I call him John) -- and I have made several valiant attempts to transfer my photos to his portable hard drive, but it won't talk ... read more
