They say Udaipur is the most romantic city in India. Well, romantics is an illusion that's only in your mind, says Dalai Lama. Then again, he is a monk who has been living in celibacy for his whole life. :) No matter what, Udaipur is a very pleasant and beautiful city with many lakeside palaces and mansions. The city palace, the lake palace and the monsoon palace all are quite unique and beautiful places. Being by a lake is all about Udaipur, all the important places and most of the restaurants are by the lake and that's where all the tourists are. The Bond movie Octopussy was partly filmed here and no one allows you to forget that. They show Octopussy in most of the restaurants every night. It's not a bad movie but enough is ... read more

Hi, Filling the gap, here is the Rajhastan story, not very much to tell, that is why I did not write so far. Pushkar: Second time to Pushkar, it remains the same. Nice holy lake but too touristic. Udaipur: Second time to Udaipur. This time with water in the lake, last time it was almost dry, after several years of draught. Udaipur is a really nice city, touristic but the Inidans there are not so pushy as they are in Pushkar (and their Hebrew is not very fluent either). The hightlight of the city is Lake Pichula, in its center there is Lake Palace which is a very luxury hotel. Octopussy movie (James Bond) was shot in Udaipur so almost every restaurant shows this movie evrey night. Bye, Sharon ... read more

... read more

The overnight bus was not so bad namely because I insisted on seat number 1 which meant there was no one in front of me to recline into me. There was a bit of a mix up during the bus switch in Jodhpur as someone else had seat #1 on their ticket but I was having none of that. I passed time showing the bus drivers' assistant my photos before I caught a few hours of sleep before we hit Udaipur at 5:30am. I tagged along with two Korean girls on the bus to a non Lonely Planet hotel named Minerva. I turned out to be fantastic and only $5 per night for a sweet room with clean, large en suite. I caught some zzzzz's and woke around noon. I immediately set out to wander the ... read more

A romantic city...? We left Bombay with a smile on our faces excited to get to the next stop, Udaipur. Known to be India's most romantic city, with the magical lake Pichola dividing the city in two parts. At least that was until about 6 years ago when it stopped raining so now it's totally dried up. Despite this, it was a very beautiful city with impressive temples such as the Jagdish temple which was carved out of one huge piece of marble and lots of postcard sunset views especially from the Monsoon Palace. We stayed in a hostel called 'Mewar inn' dubbed as a very nice place to stayexcept it was located on the outskirts of town. It had two beds, one sofa, satellite TV, hot shower and a private bathroom for the reasonable price ... read more

We spent the first half of today wandering around Udaipur and looking at a few palaces. The first one we looked at had a crystal gallery where everything was made of crystal, including massive dining tables and lounge sets. Although they were very beautiful, we got a bit bored after the first three. Also had a look at apparently one of the better attractions in Udaipur - the Durbar hall. Sadly it was just a big dusty hall with lots of pictures and old furniture. Looked very British. Next was a tour of the City Palace. This allowed us to wander around the main palace that the King of Udaipur used to live in. Unfortunately a lot of it was in disrepair or rather just very old and gross looking. The architecture was very interesting, and ... read more

Today was to be a day of luxury. We were off to Udaipur, a city in Rajasthan reknowned for its beautiful and huge palaces. In particular, the lake palace is the most famous of the lot, being situated in the middle of a picturesque lake and in fact having starred in the James Bond movie Ocotpussy. The day started off with an early morning 6:50am flight to Udaipur. However, thanks to Indian Airlines efficiency, we discovered upon arriving at the airport that the flight had been delayed until 12:30. After yelling at numerous staff (I was a bit cranky since I had to get up at 4:30am) we decided to go into Mumbai to see Chowpatty Beach - one of the nicer places in Mumbai. However, the dumb taxi driver took us to some dodgy Chowpatty ... read more

In Ahmadabad we had three hours between the two journeys, which we decided to spend in the station's restaurant. Our train was to leave at 11 p.m., but the place already closed at 10 p.m., so we walked to the platform to find the train already there. This train was almost empty, it did not seem very popular, no wonder as it took nine hours for only 380 km! This time we chose one middle and one upper berth because the last time it had been very cold on the upper berths. We immediately realised that this train was smaller, the single berths on the other side of the aisle were missing. This stretch was a metre-gauge one and we had read in the papers that the government was about to unify the track system to ... read more
