Its quite a relief to get to Udaipur and it hasn't dissapointed. There is a lot less hassle here than in the other places we have visited in the "tourist triangle" and the pace of life seems a bit more chilled. The town is built around two main lakes, with two smaller lake in between. Our hotel is by one of the two small lakes and so is fairly central. It isn't amazing but its not bad. We walked round the city palace today and went out to some gardens on an island in the middle of one of the lakes. We sat there for an hour or so and just enjoyed the sun and the peace and quiet. We get rid of our driver tomorrow and even though we got scammed along the way I ... read more

Hello all, we have now reached Udaipur which is the last stop on our chauffer driven tour, and we have waved off our driver back to Delhi. HOwever, before we arrived here we made another stop in a place called Ranakpur which is home to the most beautiful Jain temple. (Jainism is a form of Hinduism that split off rejecting the rigid caste system of india) The temple was incredibe - the most beautiful thing I have seen in India to date. It was full of carved pillars- over one thousand, no two alike (well, so I am told - I have to admit I didnt bother to check them all!) THe light and space were incredible but confusingly although Jainism is meant to have no priests, there were several guys in saffron robes claiming to ... read more

Well here we are in Udaipur, at the end of our tour of Rajasthan. After today, we are heading down to Mumbai on a train, which will be our first experience of Indian railways.... Apparently they're an unmissable part of the authentic Indian experience, although I'd probably be more excited about the prospect if we didn't have to do 8 hours on one train, get off at 4am, then onto another train for the rest of the day at 7am. I'm sure it will be character-building anyway.... Udaipur has been quite nice, although everyone is dying to tell you how the James Bond film, Octapussy, was filmed here. Naturally, everyone you speak to was pivotal to the film and had some kind of starring role. My favourite example of this is the owner of a bag ... read more

Hello everyone. Well the last few days have been just grand. Our stay with the Maheshwari's was wonderful, and after getting a firm grasp on the (partially skewed) rules of cricket from eight year old Akosh, and having our palms read by his father Alok in Jaipur, we headed on to Pushkar. First, our palms: Apparently I (Keif) will have a long life, become a great scientist and inventor, and will only have one wife and one child. Blythe will be the money maker with a very good job and will only have one husband and also only one child. However (here's the disclaimer) only 7% of these predictions come true, the rest relies on environmental factors, so who knows what's to come. In Pushkar we enjoyed the beautiful holy lake from our hotel perched on ... read more

Da da, da daaaa, da dum....This city is where a portion (about the mid-point) of Octupussy (James Bond film) when he chased in a rickshaw through the narrow streets in the city. I know this, because 70% of eating establishments have a 7 pm or 7:30 pm showing of Octupussy. Every night. Nonetheless, it is a very cool city and definitely a favorite, thus far. Though it is hard to determine if our mentally has adjusted because we are becoming 'travelers', becoming used to the Indian style of life and if the cities are truly better. We found a clean new hotel (called Hotel Udai Niwas) with a helpful travel agency on the main floor. Pretty much all the hotels have rooftop restaurants with great views of the river and the Lake Palace hotel (a 5-star ... read more

So, we left Jodhpur for our longest drive to Udaipur. However, we noticed a couple of places of interest on the way. Boy were they worth the stop. Firstly was the Jain temple at Ranakpur. Wow what a place. Built in the 14th century, it was a temple built entirely of marble, and not a square centimeter was not covered with the most amazing carvings. 144 columns - all totally different. We all said it was the best temple yet. Then we drove across the most fabulous Rajasthan high country, through tranquil fields and amazing little villages - and colour colour colour everywhere. Spot Steve on the 1000 year old yak driven water pump. This road got us to Kumbhalgarh Fort which is the second most important citadel after Chittorgarh. The fort also offers a superb ... read more

Today, our 2nd day in Udaipur, was less magical. I believe we have learned a lesson again. That the most wonderful things about a place are not its tourist attractions, but rather its ambience and people. yesterday we met many wonderful people and enjoyed the beautiful lakeside. Today, we went to the City Palace to meet the guide we arranged yesterday. He was a Rajput man, formerly a landowner, now a tourist guide. He was very proud of his culture and history, as he told us about the great leader Maharana Pratap and his victories against the Mughal emperor Akbar. We saw every single painting in the entire palace, and then continued on the rooms of the royal family. Then the pictures of the Royal family. Then it was the crystal collection of the royal family. ... read more

Although I’ve already written two entries on Udaipur, there were additional items I had wanted to share. Any entry written from India was necessarily shorter, because we had limited time on the internet. We arrived in Udaipur on January 3rd and stayed through the 5th. The city is delightful, everything that it was advertised to be, a paradise for travelers. The well-worn tourist trail can feel so good to the travellers’ feet. The so-called White city really does gleam, reflected in two man-made lakes. Every other storefront has a rooftop restaurant, with three or four flights of narrow stairways leading up to a glorious view over the city. Our first hotel, the Raj Palace, was a bit disgusting and rundown. The lights did not work and there were stains on the walls. I had originally asked ... read more

We're currently in Udaipur. It is a wonderfully romantic city, with white buildings reflected in blue man-made lakes. The labrynthine streets of the old city are easy to walk, and filled with the stuff of traveller's dreams - internet cafes, rooftop restaurants where you can dine for less than a US dollar, and plenty of little shops. We arrived yesterday and have decided this is our favorite city in India. Finally we were able to walk around and explore without having to be driven everywhere. First an update on NYE. It ended up being rather unique and fun. We went to a budget hotel called Ajit Mansion and they let us eat up on their rooftop. They do not have a restaurant there, it's just a few plastic tables, and higher up - it's just a ... read more

Hello On the way to Udaipur we stopped at this HUGE Jain Temple. It was truly amazing. There are 1444 columns in this temple. Every column is carved differently and they are just amazing, the detail is fantastic and the ceilings of the domes were so high and all carved ornately as well. The Temple is in a mountainous ( hills ) area and when you looked out from the inside the scenery was just spectacular. The whole drive to Udaipur was amazing. Parts of it reminded me of driving through the Fraser Canyon, it was beautiful. We took a tour of the city palace which was amazing. It was huge and the rooms were specatular. Some of the hallways were so narrow and the doorways were really low, although I still didn't have to duck.. ... read more
