Well, perhaps not actually bilked but... From Jaisalmer I returned back down the highway towards Jodhpur until the turnoff north. My destination was Amritsar to see the Golden Temple, but riding it in one day wasn’t possible and I’d planned a stopover in Bikaner. Nothing there really attracted me except the rat temple, plus I needed a place to sleep for the night. Motorcycle acted up a bit. It ran, but hestitatingly. Top speed was 50km per hour. At first I thought it was bad gas because it seemed to be missing, but that wasn’t it. Then I thought the carburetor might be slightly fouled, but that wasn’t it, either. I made it to Bikaner and stopped to see a mechanic on the outskirts of town, who said I needed a new battery. This was Sunday ... read more

We've finally made it to the desert. The terrain is changing rapidly now, far fewer crops and cows. Now it's all scrub, goats and camels. All of the houses are made of mud with straw roofs and have cute little outbuildings, made of dung. Nice. On the way to Bikaner we had a chance to see the rural life in the desert. A way of life that probably hasn't changed much in 500 years. Crops are still gathered by hand, mud huts are homes, camels are the beast of burden and irrigation is done by waiting for the monsoon. Of course there is some electricity and most of the goods taken to market are trucked, but the bulk of the work is done manually. Truely backbreaking work. The next stop was a true piece of luck. ... read more

We only came here to see the rat temple really, id seen it on TV ages ago, isn’t really worth the 6 bus journey but it was fascinating to see hundreds and hundreds of cute little ratty’s scampering round the temple. The Indians believe they used to be story tellers and were reincarnated into rats after death, they put out lots of food for the little creatures.... read more

An overnight stop in each, and a lot of miles, as we head back to the delightful Delhi(??) We have had a convoy of cars travelling for a while now made up of a mixture of Europeans. At home you may have a snowy Easter, but here they have a Holy or colour festival. Children create road blocks and throw paint at cars. Adults and children alike cover themselves head to foot in paint. Women do the same, but you don't see it, they celebrate at home! Hope you all had a great Easter. That's Rajistan complete. Just Agra, tiger spotting and Varanassi to go before I head South for a well earned chillout. Linda, I may be offline for while, so have a fab 40th, and have a vodie for me. I'll be in a ... read more

As the Tuk Tuk pulled up at the side of a railway station, my eyes followed the track stretching off into the desert. An old rusty barrel dripped water while a railway sign creaked in the slight breeze. As a sand devil built up momentum I looked around at the stunning dunes and deep blue sky before setting sight on three dodgy teenagers racing camels and a cart towards us. As they approached and the dust cleared, it was obvious these lads were going to be trouble. In England we would call them Hoodies, in India they are Slum Dogs. We would later brand them 'The Camel Fuckers'. Yet again the realisation that we had been scammed set in. Originally booking our trip with an official business called 'Thar Camel Safari' we were eventually driven into ... read more

Hey everyone - we have now made it to India. We are one week in and are coping fine, although Simon has been struck down with our first case of "Delhi Belly" and we both picked up colds because Northern India is a whole lot colder than SE Asia. We flew into Delhi late at night to be greeted by fog, dust, wandering street cows and locals clustered around small rubbish fires (in the street) to keep warm. It was kind of hard to get a clear view of much, although some of the street smells we picked up loud and clear. We have been really impressed by the food on offer - but we are sure the stuff offered close to tourist centers has had it's spice content turned down a bit. Butter chicken here ... read more

The bus journey to Bikaner was certainly an experience! We left little Diamond Hotel and its nice people with regret and went to wait for the bus. It rolled up looking pretty modern and nice - which it was. There were seats on the bottom and bunks on the top. The bunk was really nice and comfy, only problem was that we were at the back of the bus and the roads were far from smooth! We spent maybe half an hour in hysterics trying to arrange our things whilst being flung at the ceiling by every bump! It was going to be a long night! Needing the toilet wasnt great either with no toilet on board. I went to the front and asked the conducter what to do and he said wait 5 minutes. The ... read more

So after traveling India for 8 month I have finally made it to Rajasthan! Now I too will be able to talk to all those hip young people traveling India! Because until now my destinations within India mostly drew blank faces... Everybody seems to go to Rajasthan, this is one of the reasons I wasn't drawn to it! I feared the hassles that accompany such an amount of tourism... But it was time and I also thought it would be a nice thing for my parents to see (not the hassles of course, but the sights!) because there is a reason that everybody who is anybody goes to Rajasthan! I was hoping that it would be a little off season and this turned out to be a good assumption... It is too cold in Rajasthan for ... read more

Mandawa Day 1 & 2 - Rajasthan Tour The sights out of the car window on the way to Mandawa were made up of desert, huge carts piled high with bales being drawn by camels, goats being herded across the road by a women in brightly coloured saris, stray cows and dogs roaming the streets eating rubbish. Family homes being a mixture of tents, cloth held up by branches and concrete block houses. Riding towards us were 3 people on a motor bike, the only unusual thing about this was one was dead; stiff as a board lying horizontally across the seat. A man in his thirties, our driver commented - alcohol. Apparently in India ARAK kills thousands of men a year. The Government distilled Arak is safe, but obviously that is too expensive for some, ... read more
