Monotony and routines can quickly catch with someone who has the travel bug! The 9 to 5 schedules, the meetings, the same ole TV serials!! You are yearning to break out of it and are just waiting for the first opportunity!! That's when it happens! Something similar happened to me last month. I spent my birthday in the city doing almost the same thing i would do on another given day. That's when i decided i needed to get out. Even if it was for a day! The occasion presented itself in the form of a close friend's birthday! I knew about this Eco Camp in Panchgani. A small hill station about 100 kilometers from Pune. Panchgani means Five (Panch) Hills (Gani). Thus you will find yourself nestled amidst 5 hills each of which have a ... read more

Weekend in the Hills I have travelled many times to places both popular and little heard of. But it is very difficult to hold on to the memories and thus, the experience and feelings invoked. I begin my attempt to preserve the experience of the traveler, besides loads of photographs, with my trip to a hill station called Panchgani. Panchgani was discovered during the British Raj and was one of the many Summer Retreats for the officers and their family. Located in Satara district, Maharashtra, Panchgani is now home to many residential schools and strawberry farms, it is a scenic spot frequented by tourists from cities around. We decided to spend a weekend at the Tata Textiles Staff Holiday Home at Panchgani and made plans to travel by road in our car. On Saturday, November 27 ... read more

We left Mumbai early in the morning by train from the massive Gothic inspired railway station for the four hour trip up into the Western Ghats. Our first Indian train trip was enjoyable - you find the right platform and train, check that you actually have a seat by checking the computer printout which is pasted on the side of each carriage and load your bags aboard. The train started right on time - no announcement was made so there was a rush as everybody dived on as it started to move - and we headed out of Mumbai through endless rows of tin shacks and high rises. The fun started once we arrived in the city of Pune, at the base of the Ghats and known throughout the Western World as being the home of ... read more

Christmas Eve 2008. The first for Andy and I, has been a real blend of cultures. We have been living here on Asia Plateau for the last few days with Bek, Adam and Belle, Anjali and Tim, the Browns who are a part of our extended family and a handful of interns from all corners of the world. From Russia, Taiwan, Tibet, Darfur, Kenya, Vietnam, Nagaland, Assam, Switzerland, Germany, Korea, Australia and Cyprus (that would be me) all of us enthusiastically celebrated Christmas Eve and went on to play a game of cricket (for many a first) on Christmas Day. The Browns, Tim, Andy and I all gathered on Jean and Mike’s double bed on Christmas morning to open all the gifts Santa had dropped off for us. Anabelle was soon burried under the mountains of ... read more

The last few days have been quieter ones here at the Initiatives for Change (MRA) Asia Plateau compound near the bustling mountain town of Panchgani. It has been a special time of reflection and building of relationships for both of us. Alexia and I are sharing rooms with Anjali and Tim respectively, Anjali being the sister of my brother-in-law, Adam. One memorable experience for me was attending a midnight church service at the small local Anglican Church in the town. The Church itself is a beautiful little building tucked away on the outskirts of town. Built in 1904, it has been lovingly maintained by the small minority community of Christians. The minister is a very passionate bloke. His sermon was full of conviction and honesty, even if it lacked a little in delivery and planning. Listening ... read more

ABD - 22/12/2008 Happy Birthday Bek! A beautiful morning at Asia Plateau! Andy took Annabelle flower picking for Bek’s birthday this morning. The pair got up at 7 and enthusiastically started making Birthday cards! Adam and Bek spent the night on Sunrise plateau, building a fire and enjoying the stars, so Andy, Annabelle and I spent the night in Room 113 watching Christmas DVD’s, reading Shantaram and updating our newly created Travel Blog. Annabelle slept in my Bed so she was really excited and made Andy and I sing “Eternal Flame” to her over and over until she fell asleep. I know, I know…it’s a cheesy song but how can any one refuse this little angel anything? Breakfast was a cozy affair with a view over Panchgani on the verandah in front of the dining room. ... read more

First Day in Panchgani. Arrived last night knackered, battered, starved and frozen after a days journeying through valleys and mountains and roads less travelled. Panchgani is so far a haven for our souls and senses. I feel right at home here, very comfortable and it’s so nice to have Belle, Bek and Adam here. It will give us a real chance to bond. Belle is working on my hair right now, giving me a special do, in time for tea! Andy is lying on the Bed, totally captivated by “Shantaram” (aren’t we all?) “Initiatives for Change” is our host at Asia Plateau and with what I have seen so far, it’s a pretty good concept, I’m impressed by the architecture, the elaborate Gardens, there is even an Oval for Andy to run his laps in the ... read more

Sitting here 1500 meters above the sea in Room 113 of the Initiatives for Change Valley view building it is hard to add much to Alexia’s words. So far for me India has been an absolute assault to every one of my senses. From the moment I exited Mumbai airport and was greeted by the balmy, smelly breeze of that city along with the calming face of my beautiful Alexia things have been hectic. I can’t possibly begin to put all my impressions of India so far on to paper, but I will make a list of things that have struck me. - Cabs and cab drivers!! All the taxis in India I have seen are old style metal cars painted yellow on the roof and black on the body. They have all been individualized in ... read more
