Great flight over with Virgin, took a record 8.15hrs and got bulkhead seating - so loads of room, lush. Arrived in Mumbai lunchtime and got a fast car into town and hotel on Marine Drive with airy rooms and balconies over-looking the Arabian Sea. Mama survived the flight well, but little sleep so well tired when we arrived, so packed her off to bed for R & R the first evening. We have been well entertained and looked after for the past 2 days by Tarla our Indian lady friend, who Mama had not seen for 30 years! It was quite an occassion and she has since treated us for drinks and dinner at the Bombay Cricket Club several times, where she is a life member, so we have been well spoilt. Yesterday we were living ... read more

On the streets and the sidewalks, at the beach and in the markets, train stations and private homes, there was one constant in India. The cow. They wander with leisurely freedom where and when they like. For Indians, this is normal; they are part of the scenery, the natural environment. For us, this was a great source of amusement, and the novelty never wore off. Instead, our curiosity and fascination with the status of this animal grew. We sought a better understanding of the Holy Cow. Clearly we could not explain to most Indians the Canadian attitude toward the cow. Our tendency to see this animal in terms of its eventual fate (juicy steak) would be impossible to describe, and probably quite disturbing for the majority of Indians. As long time vegetarians, Lindsay and I felt ... read more

Geo: 19.048, 73.0828On Thursday, October 20th, after cramming a year's-worth of preparation into just a few short months, we left for our year-long journey across South Asia and Africa. With a one-way ticket, we boarded the first of three flights that would get us to Mumbai, India. After almost two days of flying (with time changes), which included a six-hour walkabout in Hong Kong, we arrived in Mumbai on Saturday. Our friend from Portland, Stacie Shelton, and her boyfriend, Mukesh Sen, were there to greet us and help us navigate through the touts and taxi drivers that wait at the airport for tourists like us. At 9PM at night, there was still traffic and it took a while for us to get to our new home for the next three months. We are living in a ... read more

I know I only wrote two days ago, but just wanted to write about the total drama flight with Air India... We reconfirmed our flight about 3 days in advance at the air India office in Nairobi, as we were leaving, the lady behind the desk gave us a tip that it was very busy and that we should get to the airport very early. We took her advice and arrived just before 2pm for our 6.20pm flight. Arriving more than 4 hours early, we expected to be the first in line waiting for the check-in desk to open in an otherwise deserted area. To our surprise, we entered the airport departures building to see a mass of Indian families and an even bigger mass of suitcases! Obviously, they had been given the tip too! ... read more

A day in life Teil 2 Am Nachmittag arbeite ich meist mit Kopfhörer.

100 ... read more

Last time we saw our hero she had just changed her phone number, an ordeal which, not surprisingly, took longer and more work than one would think. And now, what could possibly be new, you ask? Well the Jewish year for one has changed. Happy 5766 to all the Jews out there! So my mother reminded me that I haven't updated a journal in quite the long time, so allow me to update now...first off, I have internet in my apt now!!!! Well, only from 8pm-8am, but so it goes. Today I went walking with my friend Ada Chan (from Canada) around Dadar (an area of Mumbai just south of Matunga where I live). On my way to meet her, I was struck by the smells of Mumbai. I'm not quite sure why it struck me ... read more

Hello! Today we're in Bombay (Mumbai)! Jamie and I spent a few days in Jaipur. Three nights to be exact. we stayed at a hotel called Evergreen guest house, which was a really cozy place with a lovely garden, a good restaurant, and a small swimming pool. The first day I had to sleep off some on-coming sickness, and so we didn't get out into the town until later that day. We walked around the old town 'The Pink City' and bumped into some local students who were 'practising their english'. after telling us all about their studies and their lives, a random man on a motor bike said something to the boys and they hurried away from us without a backwards glance. hmm....my guess is that they were trying to scam us and the man ... read more

As scheduled we left for Mumbai from Lonavala on Tuesday morning. The scenic drive was exhilarating and I was back at my favorite rant again, “I can’t believe that such a beautiful place exists so close to Mumbai!!” Mumbai city made its presence felt sooner than expected. The topography was flat, the roads dusty, the air pungent and the omnipresent shanties. We checked into the hotel, which was luxurious and comfortable. A peek outside the balcony revealed a well-manicured lawn lined with acacia palms along the peripheral wall and adjacent to the wall on the other side were the shanties with their asbestos roofs and mud brick walls. You couldn’t escape sights of poverty even from the comfort of a five-star hotel. We snacked on the subway sandwich we picked up that afternoon and I settled ... read more
