The vipassana-course ended in the morning of the 31rst of Dec. I intended to go directly to Aurangabad to be able to visit the ancient caves of Ellora... Connecting with fellow meditators who are traveling too, we ended up being a huge group of about 15 dhamma-people taking the train to Aurangabad. Although we haven't been communicating during the course until the last day, it was as if we had known each other for a very long time and we enjoyed a very inspiring "togetherness" from the beginning on. After we meditated together, we spent new year's eve calmly in an excellent indian restaurant, going to sleep shortly after midnight... The next day I got my first indian haircut and we made people smile with a little performance in the street. BJ with his amazing devil-sticks, ... read more

The flight from Fort Cochin to Mumbai was great. We flew "King Fisher" airlines, which also happens to be India's leading beer company. I would never fly "Miller High-Life" airlines in America.....well, maybe I would....if it was a cheap flight. Anyway we landed in Bombay and jumped on an overnight train to Aurangabad. We arrived at 4:30am and took a tuk-tuk (Ha!) to our hotel. The next day was spent exporing the Ajanta Caves. We booked our bus late so we had to get a tour-bus package, including a tour-guide. I asked the guide if it was allright to explore on our own and he instructed me (michael) how this would be very bad. He said we won't learn anything from our guidebook and I'll probably get lost. We immediatly left the group. Overlooking the Waghora ... read more

Hey peeps, i know this blogg has been a long time coming but India is not blessed with an abudance of internet ascess. Since my last blogg I've been amazed, entertained and moved to tears by sheer fustration in this wierd country. I can't say i've been enjoying myself overly but it is interesting and certianly an experience. This place is so full of contrasts. People have either been horrible and annoying or embaressingly nice. This is confusing as it is easier to either hate (like vietnam) or love (like Laos) and country. But this bloody place requires you to do both at the same time which is asking to much in my opinion. We certianly havn't had a moments peace as everyone seems to have something to say to us (good or bad). Being english ... read more

2006………6wks-4th CYCLING TRIP-Gujarat & Southern Rajasthan, INDIA........... Today I cycled from Aurangabad to Ellora some 30kms away, my first real stretch of road. People make up for the effort by yelling out hellos or just big smiles, some ride along-side me on a cycle or autorickshaw or motorcycle, The usual questions.."Which Country?" (Australia is still in the good books here because of the cricket and 'Crocodile Man' rather than Johnny Howard)..."How Much? "(I give the Indian shake of the head to this but they usually insist or get someone else to ask me) and "Where are you going?" and "How old are you?" (They get surprised by this one and just shake their head which they do a lot anyway) or "What is your good name". I had thought I might call the bike 'Chinkara' which ... read more

2006………6wks-4th CYCLING TRIP-Gujarat & Southern Rajasthan, INDIA........... Coming into Aurangabad you go through a Military Zone with a prominant billboard that says "Thankyou for your visit to the green lungs of Auranganabad" You culd be confused in thinking that it refers to the pollution-free green lush nature of the city that is actually highly polluted and choked with vehicles. No, it refers to the military who show a strong presence here, particularly as a result of the bombing near here last week. The photo on the billboard was not of a lovely greeny scene, no it was of a group of soldiers firing some mortor shells. A sign by the guard box says "Sure Swift Fighters". Actually I very nearly got myself in a bit of bother- never muck with the Military. They have guns! They ... read more

Nabil and I went out for our day trip to the Ellora caves and left in the morning. We took a rickshaw to the bus station, but this time we actually took a bus. Im glad we did so that I could have the experience of taking a government bus over a short distance. Aaron was saying that they had taken a government bus for a 5 hour trip - not an exciting proposition - but it was fun for our half-hour voyage. The bus was quite rickity and I was quite pleased when we pulled up near the caves. There are a whole lot of caves at Ellora. The first ones that we visited were Buddhist, and most were in the same style as the caves in Ajunta, though the Ajunta Buddhist caves were better. ... read more

We awoke to catch the 7:45 rickshaw to the bus station. Our goal for the day was to get to the Ajunta caves and then spend the night in Aurungabad. Our trip began well, with our very helpful hotel manager getting us a rickshaw for us and our gear to the bus station. Once we arrrived there we were accosted by a tout who took us over to a share jeep. Now this was the first time we had seen a share jeep before, so we were quite hesitant. Share jeeps are basically jeeps that fill up with people and then head off to another city, picking up people and dropping people off along the way. It was pretty sketchy, and I finally convinced Nabil that we should give it a try. With that we were ... read more

Well, Steph and I have had a hectic couple of days. We took an overnight bus from Udaipur to Amedebad (I don't think I spelled that properly) which ended up taking 16 hours. I am not sure how to describe the journey. A- I was afraid for my life and B- it was soooooooo long. If you can imagine for a second being stuck in a small compartment above the seats in a bus for 16 hours, the two of us, with our bags! The first 10 hours were o.k, after that, it got a little uncomfortable. Especially because we were told it would only take 12. Word to the wise, anytime and Indian tells you it will only take a certain number of hours, add a couple on. If he/she tells you the bus will ... read more

With Ajanta being a good 3.5 hours away by public transport, I succumbed to the lure of a taxi, which managed to get there in about 1.75 hours and was only about 500 times more expensive than the bus. You can only get to an area called Ajanta T-junction via your own transport, and from there you have to take one of the special buses the remaining 4 or 5 kilometres to the caves themselves. To get to the buses from the car park, you have to run the gauntlet of a small community of persistent souvenir vendors. In fact, you may well find someone opening your car door to let you out - they are not doing this out of the goodness of their heart, rather to have first crack at some fresh tourist blood. ... read more
