So we took a private night bus from Mangalore to Kochi. We got luxury seats for the 11 hour drive, very comfortable, pleased we couldn't see too much as the driving felt a little erratic to say the least! The break in the journey, allowed for some delicious chai (sweet, milky, spicy tea) and for becks to witness "the worst toilet in the world" (trainspotting, but messier!) We got into to the main part of the city at 7am and took the ferry across to Fort Kochin, a 16th C. portughese town, very calm, quiet and full of mosquitoes. The chikungunya (sp?) disease is in decline, with hardly any recent cases reported, we were also reliably told that the carriers of this untreatable illness only bite below the knee, helpful if probably untrue! Neither us were ... read more

I stumbled across a delightful Christmas fair in Allapuzha and even got to shake hands with Grandfather Christmas (as they call him here). I stayed 2 nights in Kumarkom in the heart of the Backwaters and it was great. The few tourists there stayed mostly in their expensive resort compounds so I went exploring. Indian tourists took photos of me paddling in the dugout canoe and a few locals were bemused as I wandered along the canal, but most people were very friendly and the kids were all excited. I have learned to offer ‘one photo’ as an alternative for the frequent demands for ‘one pen’. Entering the Cardamom Hills it was thankfully cooler and Kottyam was full of colourful Pilgrims on their way to a shrine. I took a local bus and missed my stop, ... read more

Introducing ‘The Dosa Boys’ What do you get if you put an English professional gambler, a Kiwi television editor and a Vietnamese physicist together in a rickshaw for three weeks in India? Well, we're about to find out… Kiwi Nick Reid, Englishman Ivan Phillips and Vietnamese born Andy Hoang have never met one another. A posting on an online noticeboard was the start of what we hope will become a beautiful friendship. The three make up 'The Dosa Boys', just one of thirty teams entered in the infamous Rickshaw Run. This Christmas holidays The Dosa Boys and their competitors will be driving a three wheeled motorized rickshaw with a top speed of 20 miles an hour. They will traverse 3000 miles of highways, desert sands, jungles, bustling cities, mountains, villages, mud tracks and the tropical heat ... read more

Vcerajsi strajk nam dost narusil plany. Prenajali sme si riksu na cely den - ... read more

Zajtra si berieme sofera a mame v plane vidiet este vacsie vodopady ako sme videli dnes, viac druhov plantazi, samozrejme hory a uzasne pohlady do udoli. Cez den bolo stale dost teplo ale tak okolo 5:00 rano je citit ze sme v horach - super zmena po tom teple v Kochi. Priroda tu je fakt uzasna - kontrasty farieb - vsetky odtiene zelenej, pekne jazera ... read more

Ssshhh…it’s calm, it’s serene, it’s green, it’s blue, it’s purple, it’s ‘sinfully colonial’ (phrase courtesy: K G Kumar). Ssshhh…didn’t you hear it, it’s the Malabar whistling thrush, it’s the sound of the streams down the hills, it’s the sound of rain amidst the Tall Trees. Mmm…it’s the soft grilled trout, it’s the heady aroma of tea, it’s the smell of ripe oranges and gooseberries. Ahh…it’s the violet of neelkrunji, blues, whites and scarlet of hydrangeas, lilies, and anthurium …how many millions of colors can you conceive Mr. Gates! Sometimes these do happen when you can smell the colors and eye the flavors. When it makes you feel; “surrealism” is something; not only for Salvador Dali; it can belong to you also; when you are in Munnar! Nestled amidst the Western Ghats and the greenest of ... read more

So the Pooram was over and I said my goodbyes to the gaggle of travellers that had accumulated of the last few days. Sorted out getting to Munnar by bus was the best way...bit of an effort as arrived in one place where I had been told to go, to find that I couldn't get a connecting local bus, luckily private bus on hand...and completed journey. Stayed at a small homestay run by an eccentric old chap, who runs the tourist info office in town...room was expensive as it was high season, but I wanted to stay for the views across the tea plantations. Arrived at night so couldn't see anything...and had to get rickshaw up to the place as it is a dangerous trip up their with wild elephants in the area....you don't want them ... read more

Pues hoy tambien primero en ingles y mas abajo en espanyol. We left Goa to Kerala on the 16th of February (I think) and here I am writing this blog the last day in Kerala, in fact the last three days in India. Today we leave from Ernakulam to Chennai and on Wednesday night we catch the flight back to Thailand. Do I want to go back to Thailand, I would say that I don't think so. Am I going to miss India? Yes, deeply. What a country!!! the contrasts move you, make you think, reflect. You just cannot spend one day in India without having something in your insides stirred. I suppose that is what makes the difference between people who love India and people who hate it. Come to India if you are up ... read more

Since my last entry we went further down the coast to Kochi. Its quite a nice slow paced town but there were far too many tourists there (mainly americans) and it began to grate on both of us. Plus it was REALLY hot and we both started getting grumpy with being hot all the time. So we decided to journey up into the mountains to cool off for a few days. Munnar is a great place and it only took us 3 1/2 hrs to get up here by taxi from Kochi. There are cardamon and tea plantations everywhere. There are stunning views around every corner but because almost every space is covered with tea it doesn't seem real. The bright green tea leaves shining in the sun with the paths cut in between where the ... read more

Hello everyonee! Somehow a portion of the 4th week was missed so we will place it here first. We promise there won't be a quiz when we get home so if it's too long then you don't have to read it. Lost Portion of Week 4: Backwaters of Kerala We blew our budget and let ourselves be talked into chartering a houseboat for a day on the backwaters. This is becoming a big business here bringing in lots of tourist dollars in a vast area of some 900 km of lagoons, lakes, canals, estuaries and the deltas of forty-four rivers. The part we got to see was wide, deep canals laid out in a large grid with houses or small farms along each side. Behind the houses was more water, often shallower paddy fields and at ... read more
