Got to Dharamshala or Mcleod Ganj this morning after that bus ride. I am happy to say that I will not be verbally eating-my-hat but instead will be doing the opposite whatever that may be (regurgitation?). The bus was not at 4:30 as advertised. The bus was not in the location advertised (5mins away from guesthouse). The police did not allow the bus 'in' or thats what they told us; we had to get on the packed metro (8 of us) with our backpacker bags at rush hour. Not a pleasant experience. The bus left at 7. One hour and a half into the ride the bus almost skidded off the road at high speed and I suspect that if there had been another vehicle (godd forbid a motorbike) in the lane adjacent to us then ... read more

I never explained at the beginning my reason for being in India - I am on my medical school elective. If you travel much, you have probably met someone on their elective. Every summer, in all corners of the world, you may encounter suspiciously young looking people who insist they are (*cough* nearly) doctors here to do voluntary work in a hospital, trying hard to give off an air of altruism while simultaneously spending much of their time drinking and scuba diving. These are medical elective students. I am no exception. At the start of final year (in European med schools, anyway), as a reward for surviving this far, we're given a summer to go work (or rather study) abroad, anywhere in the world we choose. Of course we're not much use because despite our four-or-five ... read more

I really am living her life now. For those who don’t know who I’m talking about, her name is Lhamo Tso. She is 37 and has been through more than we can imagine. Her husband is Dhondup Wangchen, somewhat of a hero in Tibet due to the legendary documentary he made documenting the feelings of Tibetans about various things in 2008. As a consequence of this he was imprisoned for 6 years. He is now in a labour camp, despite having contracted Hepatitis B and is receiving no medical care. Lhamo Tso, her four children, niece, Dhondups parents and brothers family had to flee to India in order to be immune from being harassed by the Chinese government themselves. She is supporting so many mouths on the salary of a bread maker selling her bread at ... read more

Monday: Half way down folks.. Hard to believe that as I write this we are around 3/4 of the way to the finish line! Anyway, Monday. Our first day just us two (and of course the teacher, but she just sits there and slaps the kids now and then when they misbehave or piss themselves. Oh, and she cooks the lunch.) and in all honesty, it went very well. A little to well actually, it doesn't make for very interesting bloggage, so I'll keep it short and sweet. Monday's craft was the letter Q for Queen, so we had the kids make (and for the most part immediately discard) little paper crowns. A few of the kids (most surprisingly to me the oldest boy who is by my guess around 7) absolutely loved them though and ... read more

July 6th was a special day. Especially for Tibetans. The only birthday celebrated in their culture is the Dalai Lama’s, they rarely acknowledge their own. Obviously Mcleod Ganj, where the Dalai Lama is in residency, saw a big celebration and involved the presence of His Holiness himself! I rose early, put on my best chupa (traditional Tibetan dress) and splashed my way to the temple as the heavens had opened… non stop throughout the night and morning. I must admit, the amount of rain did put a slight downer on the event, as I was getting completely soaked, waiting for a glimpse of the man himself. Shivering and having water running down my arms, face, back, pretty much every part of my body, was all made worth it though when he stood less than a metre ... read more

After discussing how difficult it is to get people to part with their hard earned money for charities and organisations, like LIT, I came up with the idea of having a festival. Asking people to come and have fun with you and part with a few bob, is much more effective than outright asking them to donate money online. Thus the preparations for the festival for LIT began. This is one thing I like about LIT. You suggest an idea, they let you do it. After all, a volunteer operation relies on it's volunteers to grow and flourish! So I started thinking of different activities and created flyers as I anxiously waited for Saturday to arrive. When it finally arrived, it was an eventful day that turned out to be a real hit. We certainly achieved ... read more

Life in Mcleod is getting better by the day. Would I be having these experiences without LIT and Lhamo Tso though? I think not. So here I will write a little more about her and LIT, what they stand for and the amazing work they are doing. I now spend my mornings sat at the bus station with Lhamo Tso while she sells her bread. I know I say everything is the highlight of my day, but she is too! I spend around half my day with her and still want to go back for more. If she wasn't so amazing I wouldn't be getting up at 5:30 to go and sit with her for three hours. She's like a ray of sun. You cannot help but fall in love with her and her incredibly sweet ... read more

Lhamo Tso kindly gave a talk at LIT's weekly Tuesday talks. I really could not hold back the tears for this one. They came flowing uncontrollably! I could never claim to have really suffered after hearing her story. My troubles are incomparable to hers, insignificant even. If you want to continue to bury your head in the sand, stop reading now. If you want to really hear what is going on within the lives of the Tibetan nation, please… continue! As I explained in my previous blog, Lhamo Tso is the wife of Dhondup, the man who created the documentary named 'Leaving fear behind'. This documentary simply asks the opinions of many Tibetans regarding the forthcoming Olympics in China (as it was filmed in 2008) and other issues in Tibet regarding the Chinese occupation. He did ... read more

We probably should have know better that to board a night bus which had 'Oh God Save Me' written on the front, skull and crossbones on the rear brake lights and a driver with a truly manic glint in his eye. But board the bus we did and were duly rewarded with one the the most arse-spankingly, bone-shakingly exhausting AND expensive journeys that we've had in two years of travelling. So that's one for the books (funny that it was the first bus journey we've had with not one Indian on board - it was 7 of us westerners and about 2000 Tibetan school children and monks). But oh it was worth it to arrive in Ganj Mcleod. We were pretty tired after nearly 4 months of the noise, heat and dirt in India and Mcleod ... read more
